Serotypes of Pasteurella haemolytica and Pasteurella trehalosi isolated from farm animals in Hungary.

The biochemical and serological characteristics of 486 P. haemolytica and 31 P. trehalosi strains (517 in total) isolated from different lesions of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry were examined. A total of 476 P. haemolytica strains (97.9%) showed the characteristics typical of the former biotype A of P. haemolytica, while 10 isolates (2.1%), all from poultry, could not be biotyped. A total of 481 strains (93.0%) could be assigned to one of the 17 serotypes of P. haemolytica-P. trehalosi and 36 strains (7.0%) could not. The majority (83.6%) of the cattle isolates were serotypes A1 and A2. Among strains isolated from sheep all serotypes of P. haemolytica could be identified with the exception of A14, but serotypes A1, A2, A6, A8 and A5 were the most frequent. The overwhelming majority (94%) of the caprine isolates were A2, other serotypes occurred only sporadically. The pig isolates, which could be isolated only very rarely, represented different serotypes, while none of the 10 strains isolated from poultry could be biotyped or serotyped.

[Juvenile aneuploid papillary cancer of the thyroid with pulmonary metastasis].

The long-term cause-specific survival results of papillary thyroid cancer patients in Hungary are (78%) worse than the best international data (90%). The authors have recited its causes through the case of a young papillary thyroid cancer patient during the diagnostics (aspiration cytology, diagnostic imaging technics, DNA-analysis) the treatment (surgery-external radiotherapy-radioiodine treatment) and the follow-up (HTG, diagnostic imaging).

Cerebral effects of a single dose of intravenous vinpocetine in chronic stroke patients: a PET study.

The effects of vinpocetine (Cavinton) on the cerebral glucose metabolism of chronic stroke patients are studied with positron emission tomography. The regional and global cerebral metabolic rates of glucose (CMRglu) and the kinetic constants related to them are quantified before and after single-dose intravenous vinpocetine treatment. These measurements are completed with transcranial Doppler sonography and single photon emission computed tomography to explore the possible mechanisms underlying the resulting changes in glucose uptake and metabolism in the brain. The authors' findings indicate that a single-dose vinpocetine treatment, although it does not affect significantly the regional or global metabolic rates of glucose, improves significantly the transport of glucose (both uptake and release) through the blood-brain barrier in the whole brain, the entire contralateral hemisphere, and in the brain tissue around the infarct area of the symptomatic hemisphere. These changes are in accord with increased blood flow in the entire contralateral hemisphere as well as decreased blood flow velocity and increased peripheral vessel resistance in the entire symptomatic hemisphere.

[11C-methionine: an effective radio-tracer for PET scan in the detection of tumors of low proliferating capacity].

11C-methyl-methionine is available at the PET Center of University Medical School Debrecen since June, 1996. The first 5 oncological examinations were indicated for clinically suspected recurrent/residual tumorous tissue of low-grade/low proliferative capacity, following the negative or inconclusive results of previous 18F-deoxyglucose (FDG) examinations. In these situations, the methionine examinations provided conclusive results in 4 cases (out of the total of 5 examinations). On the basis of published data and own experience, the authors recommend methionine PET investigations for diagnosis, differential diagnosis and therapy monitoring of tumours of low-grade/low proliferative capacity following inconclusive results of previous FDG examination.

Regional glucose metabolic rates in the human brain: a PET study.

With the purpose of determining the regional cerebral glucose metabolic rates (rCMRglu) in the normal human brain in resting state, we measured with PET and FOG, as the tracer, the distribution of regional radioactivity levels in the brains of seven young healthy volunteers. The individual brain images were stereotactically standardised with the help of a computerised brain atlas. In the next steps, the global cerebral glucose metabolic rate (gCMRglu) in the individual subjects was normalised to 34 mumol/ 100 g/min, followed by the averaging of the stereotactically standardised and metabolically normalised brain images across the subject population. In the final step, on the basis of high precision anatomical information, three-dimensional (3-D) volumes-of-interest (VOI's), covering over thirty anatomical structures in the brain, were created and the rCMRglu values inside the VOI's were determined in the averaged image. The present measurements of the rCMRglu values are in outstanding agreement with those determined in earlier quantitative PET-FDG studies, demonstrating that stereotactically standardised and metabolically normalised images of regional radioactivity distributions in the brain can be used for quantitative determination of rCMRglu values.

[Management of secondary pneumothorax].

Results on treatment of 445 episodes of 420 patients suffering from spontaneous pneumothorax (sptx) are reported. The overall mortality was 1.4%. No death was encountered during the treatment of 246 primary sptx patients. Mortality of secondary ptx was 3.4%. Detailed data of the recent 92 patients are analysed. Recurrence rate of drainage (ICC) therapy of primary sptx was 8/33. Five out of eight patients were operated on. 16 thoracotomies were performed altogether in this group of patients. 3/18 patients were lost in the ICC treatment only subgroup of secondary sptx panel. 1/25 patient died in the ICC+pleurodesis subgroup of secondary sptx patients. Drainage and subsequent thoracotomy in case of failure of ICC treatment or of numerous recurrences is the choice to follow in primary sptx cases. Apart from exceptions there is no room for chemical pleurodesis in this form of ptx. On the other hand the ICC drainage with pleurodesis offers the best chances in the treatment of secondary sptx. Tetracycline and Vibramycin were proven as the best pleurodesis materials in first instances. Tissucol is recommended to use in case of failure of previous pleurodesis attempts.

Cross sections of proton induced nuclear reactions on enriched 111Cd and 112Cd for the production of 111In for use in nuclear medicine.

Proton induced nuclear reactions on enriched 111Cd and 112Cd have been studied up to 30 MeV in the context of routine production of the medically used isotope 111In with low and medium energy cyclotrons. The excitation functions of 111Cd(p,n)111m,gIn and 112Cd(p,2n)111m,gIn as production reactions and 111Cd(p,2n)110mIn, 111Cd(p,2n)110In, 111Cd(p,3n)109ml,m2,In, 112Cd(p,3n)110mIn, 112Cd(p,3n)110gIn as competing processes have been measured using the activation method involving the stacked-foil technique. The deduced thick target yields are compared with those obtained experimentally.

[Autoimmune hemolytic anemia in ulcerative colitis].

Out of the 215 regularly controlled patients Coombs positive anaemia developed in two during the course of ulcerative colitis. Hemolysis was manifested clinically only in one of the two cases. Steroid therapy was effective in the first and combined with azathioprine in the second case. Their experiences with the simultaneous appearance of these diseases are being discussed on the bases of previous data.

Capsaicin-sensitive mechanisms in the modulation of rat colonic vascular permeability under physiological and pathological conditions.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) causes a prolonged life-quality reduction of patients and high costs for health services. The aim of this study was to explore the possible involvement of peptidergic capsaicin-sensitive afferent nerves (CSN) in the pathogenesis of IBD. For the defunctionalization of colonic CSN, the lower part of the colon (1-4 cm from the anus) was exposed through a midline laparotomy and small pieces of gelfoam moistened with a solution of capsaicin (1%, 100 microL) was applied onto the serosal surface for 30 min in male Wistar rats. Colonic vascular permeability was assessed by measuring the extravasation of [125I] human serum albumin (2 microCi/kg, i.v., 2 h prior to killing). Two months after capsaicin treatment a significant increase in albumin extravasation was found in the lower (P < 0.005), but not in the upper (5-8 cm from the anus) part of the colon as compared to the sham-operated control. Intrarectal (8 cm from anus) administration of trinitrobenzene-sulphonic acid (TNBS; 30 mg/rat) induced similar plasma leakage in the lower and upper colon of control (CSN-intact) rats (P < 0.001) 1 week later. TNBS + ethanol (50%) produced further extravasation throughout the colon (P < 0.001) of CSN-intact animals. In the lower colon of capsaicin-pretreated rats TNBS-alone provoked an increase in plasma extravasation (P < 0.001) similar to that caused by TNBS + ethanol in CSN-intact rats. In the upper colon there was no difference in the effect of TNBS-alone on plasma leakage between control (CSN-intact) and CSN-depleted rats. The results suggest that capsaicin-sensitive nerves may play a significant protective/anti-inflammatory role in the colon under normal and pathological conditions.
