Conformation and structure of bis(glycyl-L-aspartic acid) oxalate 0.4-hydrate.

The title bis(glycyl-L-aspartic acid) oxalate complex {systematic name: bis[2-(2-ammonioacetamido)butanedioic acid] oxalate 0.4-hydrate}, 2C6H11N2O5+.C2O4(2-).4H2O, crystallizes in a triclinic space group with the planar peptide unit in a trans conformation. The asymmetric unit consists of two glycyl-L-aspartic acid molecules with positively charged amino groups and neutral carboxyl groups, and an oxalate dianion. The twist around the C-Calpha bond indicates that both the peptide molecules adopt extended conformations, while the twist around the N-Calpha bond shows that one has a folded and the other a semi-extended state. The present complex can be described as an inclusion compound with the dipeptide molecule as the host and the oxalate anion as the guest. The usual head-to-tail sequence of aggregation is not observed in this complex, as is also the case with the glycyl-L-aspartic acid dihydrate molecule. The study of aggregation and interaction patterns in binary systems is the first step towards understanding more complex phenomena. This further leads to results that are of general interest in bimolecular aggregation.

4-(4-fluoro-3-phenoxyphenyl)-6-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carbonitrile and the 6-(4-methylphenyl)- analogue.

The crystal structures of the title compounds, viz. C24H14F2N2O2, (I), and C25H17FN2O2, (II), respectively, have been determined in order to unravel the role of an ordered F atom in generating stable supramolecular assemblies. On changing the substitution from fluorine to a methyl group, C-H...F interactions are replaced by C-H...pi interactions, revealing the importance of such weak interactions when present alongside N-H...O and C-H...O hydrogen bonds. The dihedral angle between the planes of the 4-fluorophenyl ring and the pyridine ring is 26.8 (1) degrees in (I), while that between the planes of the 4-methylphenyl and pyridine rings is 29.5 (1) degrees in (II).

Synthesis and crystal chemistry of two new fluorite-related bismuth phosphates, Bi(4.25)(PO4)2O(3.375) and Bi5(PO4)2O4.5, in the Series Bi4+x(PO4)2O3+3x/2 (0.175 < or = x < or = 1).

Two new phosphates, Bi(4.25)(PO4)2O(3.375) and Bi(5)(PO(4))(2)O(4.5), have been analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the series Bi(4+x)(PO4)2O(3+3x/2) (0.175 < or = x < or = 1). The syntheses of the compositions ranging from x = 0.175 to 0.475 were carried out by the ceramic route. The compositions from x = 0.175 to 0.475 form a solid solution with a structure similar to that of Bi(4.25)(PO4)2O(3.375), while Bi(5)(PO4)2O(4.5) was isolated from a mixture of two phases. Both of the phases form fluorite-related structures but, nevertheless, differ from each other with respect to the arrangement of the bismuth atoms. The uniqueness in the structures is the appearance of isolated PO(4) tetrahedra separated by interleaving [Bi2O2] units. ac impedance studies indicate conductivity on the order of 10(-5) S cm(-1) for Bi(4.25)(PO4)2O(3.375). Crystal data: Bi(4.25)(PO4)2O(3.375), triclinic, space group P (No. 1), with a = 7.047(1) A, b = 9.863(2) A, c = 15.365(4) A, alpha = 77.604(4) degrees, beta = 84.556(4) degrees, gamma = 70.152(4) degrees, V = 980.90(4) A3, and Z = 4; Bi(5)(PO4)2O(4.5), monoclinic, space group C2/c (No. 15), with a = 13.093(1) A, b = 5.707(1) A, c = 15.293(1) A, beta = 98.240(2) degrees, V = 1130.95(4) A(3), and Z = 8.

Substitution effect on the photocatalytic degradation by the series AxBi26-xMo10O68+0.5y (A = Ba, y = 0; A = Bi, La, y = 2): a kinetic study.

The compounds Ba2Bi24Mo10O68 and La2Bi24Mo10O69 were synthesized by the ceramic route and characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, respectively. The structure of these phases is isostructural with that of Bi26Mo10O69. Along the b axis columns of [Bi12O14] units are separated by MoO4 tetrahedra and noncolumnar A (A = Ba, La) atoms. UV-visible spectra of Bi26Mo10O69, Ba2Bi24Mo10O68, and La2Bi24Mo10O69 suggest that band gap decreases on substitution of La and Ba for Bi at the noncolumnar site. The photocatalytic degradation of water pollutants such as phenol and substituted phenols was studied. All the catalysts show specificity toward nitro substituent at the para position in the aromatic ring.

Bis(glycinium) oxalate: evidence of strong hydrogen bonding.

In the title 2:1 salt, 2C2H6NO2+.C2O4(2-), the glycine molecule is in the cationic form with a positively charged amino group and an uncharged carboxylic acid group. The doubly charged oxalate anion lies across a crystallographic inversion centre. One of the reasons why the 1:1 glycinium oxalate salt has a higher melting point than the title compound may be the difference in their hydrogen-bonding patterns. A database search for salts formed between amino acids or substituted amino acids and oxalic acid revealed that, in most of the structures, the conformation about the O=C-OH bond is synplanar. D-Tryptophan oxalate is the only example where the OH group of a semi-oxalate adopts an antiplanar conformation. The 2:1 stoichiometry seen in the present salt is observed only in the salts of DL-serine, DL-aspartic acid and betaine with oxalic acid.

Micellar aggregates and hydrogels from phosphonobile salts.

The aggregation properties of novel bile acid analogs-phosphonobile salts (PBS)-have been studied. The critical micellar concentration of 23 and 24-phosphonobile salts were measured using fluorescence and 31P NMR methods. All the ten synthesized phosphonobile salts formed gels at different pH ranges in water. The pH range at which individual PBSs could gelate water was narrow and influenced by the number and conformation of hydroxyl groups. A reversible thermochromic system has been developed (with 23-phosphonodeoxycholate at pH 3.3), which changes color upon gelation. The investigation of the first hydrogels derived from trihydroxy bile acid analogs 1 and 6 was made using fluorescence, 31P NMR, X-ray crystallography, circular dichroism and SEM. The present studies reveal that the gel network consists of a chiral, fibrous structure possessing hydrophobic interiors.

Synthesis, structure, and photocatalysis in a new structural variant of the Aurivillius phase: LiBi4M3O14 (M = Nb, Ta).

Two new compounds, LiBi4Nb3O14 and LiBi4Ta3O14, have been synthesized by the solid-state method, using Li2CO3, Bi2O3, and M2O5 (M = Nb, Ta) in stoichiometric quantities. These compounds crystallize in the monoclinic C2/c space group with a = 13.035(3) A, b = 7.647(2) A, c = 12.217(3) A, beta = 101.512(4) degrees , V = 1193.4(5) A3 , and Z = 4 and a = 13.016(2) A, b = 7.583(1) A, c = 12.226(2) A, beta = 101.477(3) degrees , V = 1182.6(5) A3, and Z = 4, respectively. These are isostructural and the structure along the b axis consists of layers of [Bi2O2]2+ units separated by layers of LiO4 tetrahedra and NbO6 octahedra hence depicting an unusual variation in the Aurivillius phase isolated for the first time. The presence of lithium has been confirmed by 7Li NMR studies. ac impedance measurements and variable temperature (7)Li NMR studies indicate oxygen ion conductivity in these materials. The UV-visible spectra suggest a band gap of 3.0 eV for LiBi4Nb3O14 and 3.5 eV for LiBi4Ta3O14, respectively, and the associated studies on degradation of dyes and phenols render these materials suitable for photocatalysis.

Family of mixed-valence oxovanadium(IV/V) dinuclear entities incorporating N4O3-coordinating heptadentate ligands: synthesis, structure, and EPR spectra.

Dinuclear (V(IV)V(V)) oxophenoxovanadates of general formula [V2O3L] have been synthesized in excellent yields by reacting bis(acetylacetonato)oxovanadium(IV) with H3L in a 2:1 ratio in acetone under an N2 atmosphere. Here L3- is the deprotonated form of 2,6-bis[{{(2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L1), 2,6-bis[{{(5-methyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L2), 2,6-bis[{{(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L3), 2,6-bis[{{(5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol(H3L4), 2,6-bis[{{(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N'N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L5), or 2,6-bis[{{(5-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N'N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L6). In [V2O3L1], both the metal atoms have distorted octahedral geometry. The relative disposition of two terminal V=O groups in the complex is essentially cis. The O=V...V=O torsion angle is 24.6(2) degrees . The V-O(oxo)-V and V-O(phenoxo)-V angles are 117.5(4) and 93.4(3) degrees , respectively. The V...V bond distance is 3.173(5) A. X-ray crystallography, IR, UV-vis, and 1H and 51V NMR measurements show that the mixed-valence complexes contain two indistinguishable vanadium atoms (type III). The thermal ellipsoids of O2, O4, C10, C14, and C15 also suggests a type III complex in the solid state. EPR spectra of solid complexes at 77 K display a single line indicating the localization of the odd electron (3d(xy)1). Valence localization at 77 K is also consistent with the 51V hyperfine structure of the axial EPR spectra (3d(xy)1 ground state) of the complexes in frozen (77 K) dichloromethane solution: S = 1/2, g(parallel) approximately 1.94, g(perpendicular) approximately 1.98, A(parallel) approximately 166 x 10(-4) cm(-1), and A(perpendicular) approximately 68 x 10(-4) cm(-1). In contrast isotropic room-temperature solution spectra of the family have 15 hyperfine lines (g(iso) approximately 1.974 and A(iso) approximately 50 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) revealing that the unpaired electron is delocalized between the metal centers. Crystal data for the [V2O3L1].CH2Cl2 complex are as follows: chemical formula, C32H43O6N4Cl2V2; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, C2/c; a = 18.461(4), b = 17.230(3), c = 13.700(3) A; beta = 117.88(3) degrees ; Z = 8.

The X-ray structures of the complexes are reported. The molecular structures observed in the solid state are preserved in solution ((1)H NMR). In acetonitrile solution the Re(V)O(L)Cl, 2, display a one-electron couple, Re(VI)O(L)Cl(+)-Re(V)O(L)Cl, near 1.0 V vs SCE. The electrogenerated hexavalent complexes [Re(VI)O(L)Cl]ClO(4), 3, are paramagnetic and display sextet EPR spectra in solution at room temperature (A(av) approximately 417 (G), g approximately 1.914).

Solution and solid-state structure of N-acetamido-3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-2-azido-2-deoxy-alpha-D-galactopyranosylamine.

High resolution 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray structural analyses of N-acetamido-3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-2-azido-2-deoxy-alpha-D-galactopyranosylamine (1), a minor product of azidonitration reaction of 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl galactal, are reported. The solution phase studies of 1 reflect that the compound exists in 4C1 conformation with cis-orientation of the substituents at C-1 and C-2. The solid-state structure of 1 reveals that a molecule of water is entrapped in the solid state of 1 and this water molecule serves to mediate N-H...O and C-H...O interactions.

Synthesis and structure of M0.5Bi3P2O10 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb) series.

A series of M(0.5)Bi(3)P(2)O(10) compounds with M = Ca, Sr, Ba and Pb have been synthesized in MO-Bi(2)O(3)-P(2)O(5) ternary systems by the ceramic method and the crystal structures were then solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. These compounds are isostructural with Bi(6.67)P(4)O(20) (triclinic, space group P1;, Z = 2). The structures consist of infinite chains of Bi(2)O(2) units along the c axis formed by linking BiO(8) and BiO(6) polyhedra. These chains are interconnected by MO(8) polyhedra forming two-dimensional layers in the ac plane. The phosphate tetrahedra are sandwiched between these layers.

The crystal structure of 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-benzoyl-alpha-D-mannopyranose: observation of C-H...pi interaction as a surrogate to O-H...O interaction of a free sugar.

The crystal structure of the title compound was determined by X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallized in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with four molecules in the unit cell with a=9.170(2), b=9.873 (2), c=38.831(8) A. The structure was refined to a R index of 0.041 for 7907 independent reflections. The mannopyranose unit adopts a distorted 4C1 conformation. The structure depicts unique network of C-H...pi interactions, very closely resembling the pattern of O-H...O interactions in free sugars. This intriguing and rare observation points to a notion that the supramolecular organization pertaining to a sugar is in-built in the pyranose ring itself.

Electron density study of 2H-chromene-2-thione.

The charge-density distribution in 2H-chromene-2-thione (2-thiocoumarin), C(9)H(6)OS, has been determined from X-ray diffraction data measured at 90 K using a CCD detector, to a resolution of sintheta/lambda < 1.08 A(-1). A multipolar-atom density model was fitted against 6908 reflections with I > 2sigma(I) [R(F) = 0.021, wR(F) = 0.022, goodness of fit = 1.81] in order to generate the difference Fourier maps. The topological properties of the molecular electron density in terms of the bond critical points and the evaluation of the dipole moment show that the molecular dipole moment in the crystal is higher than the corresponding value derived from theoretical calculations.

Charge densities from high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments.

The combination of intense X-ray sources, especially synchrotron radiation, with area-detector technology has accomplished an enormous advance in the experimental conditions available for charge-density analysis by single-crystal high-resolution X-ray diffraction. Such experiments can now be carried out in a time measured in hours rather than weeks. Some features of these experiments are examined and preliminary results are reported for charge-density studies of 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde N-cyclohexylimine (1), octakis(m-tolylthio)naphthalene (2), and 7-fluoro-4-styrylcoumarin (3). Weak interactions in crystals of (1) and (3) are found to have similar charge-density characteristics. Cages in the crystal lattice of (2) have a complex charge distribution.

Export of proteins across membranes: the helix reversion hypothesis.

A model is presented which explains the biological role of the leader peptide in protein export. Along the lines of this model, the conformational changes of a protein with environment serves as a general mechanism for translocation. The leader peptide in the cytoplasm takes a hairpin like conformation which reverts to an extended helix upon integration into the membrane. The essential features of this model are in accord with recent results of protein export.
