Spin polarized metastable He*(2(3)S, 1s2s) stimulated desorption of H(+) ions.

The yield of H(+) in the metastable He*(2(3)S, 1s2s) stimulated desorption (MSD) on an H2O/Na/Fe surface has been found to depend on the spin of the incident He*. By combination with the spin-resolved analysis for the surface electronic structure, it is indicated that the neutralization of the hole in the OH 3 sigma molecular orbital, which is created by the incident He*, by Na 3s electrons plays a crucial role in the spin polarization of the H (+) MSD intensity. The dependence of the spin polarization of H(+) MSD on the kinetic energy of the desorbed H(+) has been observed, and it is discussed based on the Menzel-Gomer-Readhead model.

Studies on the constituents from the aerial part of Baccharis dracunculifolia DC.

Ten new glycosides, named dracunculifosides A-J, were isolated along with sixteen known glycosides from the aerial part of Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Compositae). The structures of these glycosides were determined on the basis of spectral and chemical evidence. These new glycosides consisted of beta-D-glucopyranose or beta-D-apiofuranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranose, and most possess an (E)-caffeoyl group.

Bufadienolides and a new lignan from the bulbs of Urginea maritima.

Thirty three compounds were obtained from the bulbs of Urginea maritima (Liliaceae). The compounds were identified by means of fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), (13C-NMR), nuclear overhauser effects (NOE) and two dimensional (2D) NMR. Ten of them were new natural compounds. Nine were bufadienolides and only one was lignan in these compounds.

Apoptosis-inducing activity of high molecular weight fractions of tea extracts.

High molecular weight fractions of green tea, black tea, oolong tea, and pu-erh tea were found to induce apoptosis in human monoblastic leukemia U937 cells by examination of their ability to inhibit cell proliferation and to induce apoptotic body formation and DNA ladder formation. These tea fractions were also shown to induce apoptosis in stomach cancer MKN-45 cells. In addition to known antitumor-promoting activity of tea high molecular weight fractions, their apoptosis-inducing activity may contribute to cancer chemopreventive effects of tea.

Steroidal glycosides from the aerial part of Asclepias incarnata.

The aerial part of Asclepias incarnata afforded 34 pregnane glycosides. These were confirmed to have lineolon, isolineolon, ikemagenin, 12-O-nicotinoyllineolon, deacylmetaplexigenin, metaplexigenin, rostratamine, 12-O-acetyllineolon, 15beta-hydroxylineolon and 15beta-hydroxyisolineolon moieties as their aglycones, and 2.6-dideoxyhexopyranose, glucopyranose and allopyranose as the corresponding sugar constituents. Their structures were determined using both spectroscopic and chemical methods.

Apoptosis-inducing activity of galloyl monosaccharides in human histiocytic lymphoma U937 cells.

Three galloyl monosaccharides contained in medicinal plants were examined for apoptosis-inducing activity in human histiocytic lymphoma U937 cells. Tetragalloyl glucose (TgG) induced apoptosis as found by chromatin condensation, DNA ladder formation, and inhibition by a caspase inhibitor. Digalloyl hamamelose had moderate activity, while monogalloyl glucose was only marginally active. These findings suggest that the number and disposition of their phenolic groups are important for apoptosis induction. TgG induced apoptosis in human colon and stomach cancer cell lines as well, indicating it is potentially useful as an anti-cancer agent.

Cardenolide and oxypregnane glycosides from the root of Asclepias incarnata L.

Twenty-nine new oxypregnane glycosides were obtained along with two known cardenolides, frugoside and gofruside, and three known 12-O-acylated pregnane glycosides from the roots of Asclepias incarnata L. (Asclepiadaceae). By detailed studies of the 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra, the structures were determined to be tri- to penta glycosides of isolineolon, 12-O-acetyllineolon, ikemagenin, 12-O-benzoylisolineolon, and two new 12-O-acylated pregnanes.

Inhibitory effects of tetragalloylglucose and digalloylhamamelose on adhesion and in vitro invasion of mouse lung carcinoma cells.

Tetragalloylglucose (TgG) and digalloylhamamelose (DgH) were found to inhibit adhesion to and invasion through Matrigel of mouse Lewis lung carcinoma LL2-Lu3 cells, which are highly metastatic. TgG inhibited matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) from the tumor cells like (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, whereas DgH did not. These results suggest that TgG and DgH inhibit tumor cell invasion by inhibiting MMPs and/or cell adhesion of the tumor cells.

Selective ablation of porcine and rabbit liver tissue using radiofrequency: preclinical study.

Temperature changes and their distribution induced by 13.56-MHz radiofrequency (RF) heating of agar phantom and porcine and rabbit liver were investigated. It was possible to produce selective local heating of approximately 50 degrees C in the RF field of 2 x 2 x 2 cm(3) of the pig or rabbit liver. Coagulation necrosis after heating became pronounced and the margin between the coagulated lesion and normal tissue became clearer with time. Within 1 week after RF heating at 50 degrees C for 20 min, the coagulated area was replaced selectively and totally by necrotic tissue.

Biomechanical behavior of hydroxyapatite as bone substitute material in a loaded implant model. On the surface strain measurement and the maximum compression strength determination of material crash.

Many investigators have advocated that hydroxyapatite ceramics may be extremely prospective bone substitute material mainly through evidence with its given biocompatibility towards bone and demonstrated continuity between living bone and hydroxyapatite. Its mechanical brittleness and strength, however, have been the most serious considerations. In this paper, a study has been performed using animal experiments, massive hydroxyapatite ceramics are implanted into rectangular bone defect created by operation at the load-bearing area in close contact with tibia plateau. The changes of surface strain at the hydroxyapatite implantation of retrieved tibiae are measured at any week after implantation when the compressive stress were applied in the direction of long axis in order to clarify the mechanical behaviors of hydroxyapatite living bone complex. The compression strength of hydroxyapatite implant crash was also determined at each week after implantation. Results revealed that the hydroxyapatite living bone complex has been proven to have sufficient flexibility such that it shows no hysteresis in stress versus strain relationship up to 200 kg of applied load. The strain pattern on the surface of hydroxyapatite implant develops quite similar to that of natural cortical bone. The material crash of hydroxyapatite implant tolerates up to 500 kg of load at 52 weeks after implantation. These characteristics suggest that it achieves normal skeletal function in the points of biomechanical properties in vivo.

[Two elderly patients with intestinal perforation caused by press-through package].

We report two cases of intestinal perforation caused by accidental swallowing of Press-Through Packages (PTP). The first case occurred in a 90-year-old woman with moderate dementia. She was admitted to our hospital because of abdominal pain and intestinal obstruction. She showed symptoms and sign of peritonitis and underwent abdominal surgery. The postoperative diagnosis was diffuse peritonitis due to a perforated rectal ulcer caused by the sharp corners of an accidentally swallowed PTP. The second case occurred in an 82-year-old woman with recurrent symptoms and signs of intestinal obstruction. She underwent abdominal surgery and the operation revealed an ileal perforation due to penetration by the sharp edge of a PTP. Both patients were discharged in good condition. PTPs are rapidly becoming popular as packaging for tablets and capsules. However, reports of accidental swallowing of PTPs have recently been increasing. In most cases, the PTPs were found in the esophagus and removed endoscopically. Progression of accidentally swallowed PTPs to the intestines is rare. However, when this occurs, the patient's condition becomes more serious. We propose that drugs should not be dispensed in PTPs but rather handed to the patients, especially to elderly patients, or when impossible, the corners of PTPs should be rounded.

[A case of paraesophageal omental herniation].

A 48-year-old woman underwent routine chest roentgenography and a mass shadow was seen in the posterior mediastinum. CT, MRI and celiac arteriography were performed, and paraesophageal omental herniation was diagnosed. Paraesophageal omental herniation is uncommon, and there have been no reports cases with complications. Therefore, this case is being followed-up carefully.

Acute myelogenous leukaemia with t(8;21) translocation of normal cell origin in mosaic Down's syndrome with isochromosome 21q.

We report a 13-year-old girl with Down's syndrome (DS) having a mosaic karyotype of 46,XX/46,XX, -21,+i(21q), who developed acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML) (FAB M1). The t(8;21) translocation generating a AML1/MTG8 chimaeric gene of her blasts was demonstrated by cytogenetic analysis and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Interestingly, the leukaemic clone with t(8;21) did not have isochromosome 21q, indicating that the blasts were of normal cell origin. These findings suggest that, in older patients with DS, 21 trisomy cells have no greater predisposition to develop AML than normal karyotypic cells.

Selective antitumor activity in vitro from marine algae from Japan coasts.

In vitro selective antitumor activity was tested as a general screening parameter for biologically active substances from a wide range of species of seaweed, 1446 samples of 306 species of marine algae from Japan's coasts. The algae extracts were prepared successively first by phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and then by methanol, and then tested for in vitro selective antitumor activity against murine lymphoid leukemia L1210 cells and for low cytotoxic activity against NIH-3T3 normal cells. Strong cytotoxic activity against L1210 cells was found in 47 species of algae, also showing similar cytotoxicity to mouse NIH-3T3 normal cells. However, four species of green algae showed strong activity specifically against L1210 cells, with low cytotoxicity to normal cells. Such selective activity was conspicuous in two brown and two green algae extracts. In particular, methanol extracts from the green alga, Cladophoropsis vaucheriaeformis, exhibited high viability (86%) to normal cells, showing selective cytotoxicity to tumor cells. This alga extract was no cytocidalic, but cytostatic against L1210 cells. Furthermore, the results of a cytotoxic spectrum test with 9 cell lines including those of L1210 and NIH-3T3 demonstrated that this extract acted strongly only against leukemic cell lines L1210 and P388.
