Airway obstruction due to oppression by the right aortic arch is relatively common in the newborn, but has never been reported in the adult. We reported an aged case of right main bronchial stenosis due to the oppression by the right aortic arch, performed successful bronchodilatation using the stent. A 92-year-old male complained of fever and productive cough and hospitalized with a diagnosis of pneumonia. Close examinations revealed that his right main bronchus was stenotic due to oppression by the right aortic arch. Bronchodilatation was performed successfully using a Gianuturco-type expandable metallic stent. No endoluminal stenosis was found during 12 months follow up. For the treatment of bronchial deformity by the extrabronchial oppression, implantation of the Gianturco-type expandable metallic stent is considered to be very useful method.
Staphylococcus auriculans DBF63, which can grow on dibenzofuran (DBF) or fluorene (FN) as the sole source of carbon and energy, was isolated. Salicylic acid and gentisic acid accumulated in the culture broth of this strain when DBF was supplied as a growth substrate. Also, the formation of 9-fluorenol, 9-fluorenone, 4-hydroxy-9-fluorenone, and 1-hydroxy-9-fluorenone was demonstrated, and accumulation of 1,1a-dihydroxy-1-hydro-9-fluorenone was observed when this strain grew on FN. On the basis of these results, the degradation pathways of DBF and FN were proposed. The analogous oxidation products of dibenzo-p-dioxin were obtained by incubation with DBF-grown S. auriculans DBF63 cells.
Three bacterial strains, identified as Alcaligenes sp. strain D-59 and Pseudomonas sp. strains D-87 and D-186, capable of growing on 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMN) as the sole source of carbon and energy were isolated from soil samples. 2,6-Naphthalene dicarboxylic acid was formed in the culture broths of these three strains grown on 2,6-DMN. In addition, 2-hydroxymethyl-6-methylnaphthalene and 6-methylnaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid were detected in the culture broth of strain D-87. Strain D-87 grew well on 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 2,3-, and 2,7-DMN as the sole source of carbon and energy and accumulated 2-methylnaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid and 2,3-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid from 2,3-DMN, 4-methylnaphthalene-1-carboxylic acid from 1,4-DMN, and 7-methylnaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid from 2,7-DMN.

Strain SY1, identified as a Corynebacterium sp., was isolated on the basis of the ability to utilize dibenzothiophene (DBT) as a sole source of sulfur. Strain SY1 could utilize a wide range of organic and inorganic sulfur compounds, such as DBT sulfone, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethyl sulfone, CS2, FeS2, and even elemental sulfur. Strain SY1 metabolized DBT to dibenzothiophene-5-oxide, DBT sulfone, and 2-hydroxybiphenyl, which was subsequently nitrated to produce at least two different hydroxynitrobiphenyls during cultivation. These metabolites were separated by silica gel column chromatography and identified by nuclear magnetic resonance, UV, and mass spectral techniques. Resting cells of SY1 desulfurized toluenesulfonic acid and released sulfite anion. On the basis of these results, a new DBT degradation pathway is proposed.

In an attempt to clarify the effect of preoperative radiation on rectal cancer after sphincter-saving resection, radiation group (10 cases) and non-radiation group (22 cases) were studied clinicopathologically. A rate of local recurrence was 36.4% and 10.0% in radiation and non-radiation group, respectively. In cumulative 5-year-survival, non-radiation group showed 70.7%, however, all cases were alive in radiation group. Histological examination demonstrated that such factors predictive of local recurrence as depth of invasion a2, ew (distance between tumor invasion and surgical surface) less than 2 mm, have reduced in radiation group. As a result, it was shown that irradiation had an effect of lowering local recurrences even in cases with high risk factors of local recurrence prescribed above. On the contrary, AW (distance between tumor invasion and anal stump) and frequency of lymph node metastasis had no association with local recurrence, and have not changed favorably even after irradiation. It was also thought to be important to avoid radiation colitis as carefully as possible in radiation therapy for rectal cancer.
