Total parenteral nutrition in clinically normal cats.

Seven clinically normal cats were maintained on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) with nothing given PO for 2 weeks. The TPN solution consisted of a mixture of dextrose, amino acids, soybean oil emulsion, electrolytes, and vitamins. Three cats were fed calories in excess of published maintenance requirements, and they gained some weight, vomited occasionally, had oral ulcerations, and had signs of depression after 10 to 13 days on TPN. Four cats that were not overfed did well clinically and maintained stable body weights. All cats developed anemia and thrombocytopenia to varying degrees during TPN administration and had polyuria and serum triglyceride concentrations higher than normal fasting values. Some cats had changes in liver-specific biochemical variables. Hepatocellular swelling and vacuolation and small intestinal villous atrophy and fusion were the most common histopathologic changes seen after TPN. These changes were reversible when TPN was discontinued and the cats were returned to enteral nutrition.

Neuroaxonal dystrophy in a rottweiler pup.

An 8-month-old Rottweiler pup was evaluated for neurologic disorder. Clinical signs included ataxia, hypermetria of all 4 limbs, intention tremors of the head, lack of a menace reflex bilaterally, and mild proprioceptive deficits. The pup was euthanatized because of the progressive nature of the disease. Histopathologic findings consisted of decreased numbers of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum and moderate numbers of axonal spheroids in the nucleus cuneatus. This latter finding confirmed the diagnosis of neuroaxonal dystrophy.

Iron toxicity in neonatal foals.

Newborn Shetland foals died of acute hepatic failure following oral administration of approximately 16 mg/kg body weight ferrous fumarate. Lesions in these foals were indistinguishable from lesions in foals given an oral digestive inoculant containing ferrous fumarate and were also similar to the syndrome characterised as 'toxic hepatopathy' in foals in the United States in 1983. We conclude that foals are susceptible to toxicity from low doses of iron compounds in the first few days of life. Vitamin E and selenium deficiency may contribute to this susceptibility.

Humoral immune response of the bovine fetus to in utero vaccination with attenuated bovine coronavirus.

A fetal response to in utero vaccination with attenuated bovine coronavirus (9 to 49 days before parturition) was determined in 8 calves, 5 vaccinated and 3 controls. Calves were derived by hysterotomy before parturition and were maintained in a closed gnotobiotic environment. The IgA, IgM, and IgG values and coronavirus-neutralizing antibody titers were higher in the sera and intestinal loop fluid from vaccinated calves than in those from control calves. Sections of ileum and ileal lymph nodes from 1-day-old vaccinated calves, when stained with monospecific anti-bovine IgG, IgM, and IgA had numerous positively stained plasma cells. Positive fluorescence was not detected in comparable tissues from controls. When the 8 calves were given virulent coronavirus orally at 6 days of age, vaccinated calves did not become ill, whereas control calves had diarrhea in 19 to 22 hours. All calves were killed at 10 days of age. Control calves had lesions characteristic of coronavirus infection, and intestinal epithelial cells were positive by fluorescent antibody tests. In vaccinated calves, lesions of coronavirus infection were absent, and results of fluorescent antibody tests were negative. Although in utero vaccination with a coronavirus vaccine stimulated immunity in the newborn calf, the frequency of abortions (2 of 14 cows inoculated intra-amniotically) and premature births (4 of 14) precluded practical application.

A false diagnosis of a cracked tooth: report of case.

A case of false diagnosis of cracked tooth syndrome is reported, illustrating an instance in which all of the diagnostic criteria suggested reasons for the syndrome; however, the actual cause was related to atypical root canal anatomy and external root resorption of the tooth in question.

Tooth discoloration induced by endodontic sealers.

Endodontic therapy often results in discoloration of the tooth crown. The main causes are blood, necrotic pulp tissue, and endodontic materials. The staining potentials of various materials were examined in vitro by means of a visual method for tooth color determination. Extracted premolars were prepared, and the following sealers were introduced into the pulp cavities: Zinc oxide eugenol cement, Grossman's cement, AH26, Diaket, N2, Riebler's paste, Tubliseal, and Endomethasone. Before the sealers were applied, the original tooth colors were assessed on the external buccal tooth surfaces. Further color determinations were carried out at regular intervals up to 6 months after introduction of the sealers. Each material induced measurable tooth discoloration within 3 weeks. Riebler's paste caused the most severe discoloration while Diaket caused a mild stain. The other materials produced intermediate discolorations between those of Riebler and Diaket.

Morphological alterations of small intestinal epithelium of calves caused by feeding soybean protein.

Sixteen male Holstein calves were fed milk replacer (14% solids) containing 23% crude protein from: 100% milk protein; or 66% soybean protein concentrate plus 34% milk protein as the only nutrients at 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12, and 12% body weight from 1 to 7 wk of age, respectively. Eight calves were sensitized to soybean by feeding 66% soybean protein concentrate plus 34% milk protein for 21 d and eight were not sensitized by feeding 100% milk protein. Afterward, each calf received one of the diets for 10 d followed by the other diet for an additional 10 d. During the 2nd wk of the initial period each calf was surgically fitted with a duodenal cannula for biopsy of intestinal mucosa. Biopsies were taken at surgery and on the last day of each period. Feeding 66% soybean protein concentrate plus 34% milk protein resulted in lower body weight gain, decreased feed efficiency, higher rectal temperatures, increased diarrhea, and villus atrophy. Diminished villi size supports other studies reporting allergic reaction to soybean protein and was associated with the poor performance observed in calves fed soybean protein.

Gnotobiotic calves: derivation, maintenance, Thiry-Vella loop preparation, and ethylene oxide gas sterilization.

Twenty-four pregnant Holstein cows were used to develop techniques and procedures to obtain calves by hysterotomy and to maintain them in a closed gnotobiotic environment (sterile plastic-film isolators) for as long as 10 days for infectious disease research. Thiry-Vella loop preparation for obtaining intestinal loop secretions was done in a surgical isolator and was successful in 12 of 14 gnotobiotic calves. Ethylene oxide gas was effective in sterilizing heat-labile and moisture-sensitive instruments and equipment.

Instrumentation of finely curved canals.

The conclusion to be reached should not be that one method of enlargement is better than another in finely curved canals, or that one filling material is better than another but rather that all materials and methods have strong points and weak points which should be taken into consideration when endodontic therapy is performed. The stepback enlargement technique is probably the best technique for enlarging finely curved canals, but problems may be experienced with it also if careful procedures of instrumentation and cleansing are not followed. If these factors are kept in mind it will help us to provide the highest possible quality of endodontics.

Four-phase study of computer-assisted and slide-tape methods of stimulating clinical endodontic problems.

1. Computer-assisted instruction of stimulated clinical endodontic problems is superior to a slide-tape presentation for test selection but not for diagnosis and treatment planning. 2. The lack of a difference in diagnosis is likely due to the already superior performance of students in diagnosis at the University of Kentucky without computer assistance. A study with students of less background might reveal a difference in presentation methods. 3. Students with high GPSs score higher on a written test of endodontic clinical judgment. 4. Reliable results on the effects of a human tutor's supplementing machine instruction were not obtained. 5. Students felt that the problems presented in this study were useful in preparing for clinical treatment of patients. 6. After some exposure to machine methods of instruction, students divided into three sizable groups, one preferring a human teacher, another preferring a machine, and the third having no preference. The decision to use only machine or human instruction cannot then be made from student attitudes. 7. Students liked the active participation and immediate responses of the computer but not the time necessary to complete the problems. 8. Students liked the self-pacing, speed, and convenience of the slide-tape method but not the incompleteness of the problems presented by this method. 9. It appears that there is some justification from this study for offering both slide-tape and computer-assisted presentations to students.

A comparative study of apical leakage with endodontic implant stabilizers.

The apical seals of 75 extracted teeth that were treated with three methods of endodontic implant stabilizers were compared with the seals of 25 teeth filled with silver cones and 25 teeth filled with laterally condensed gutta-percha. Apical leakage was measured with the use of methylene blue dye solution. Statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences between the apical leakage obtained from the teeth treated with endodontic implant stabilizers and those teeth filled with silver cones and with laterally condensed gutta-percha.
