Minority games with score-dependent and agent-dependent payoffs.

Score-dependent and agent-dependent payoffs of the strategies are introduced into the standard minority game. The intrinsic periodicity is consequently removed, and the stylized facts arise, such as long-range volatility correlations and "fat tails" in the distribution of the returns. The agent dependence of the payoffs is essential in producing the long-range volatility correlations. The new payoffs lead to a better performance in the dynamic behavior nonlocal in time, and can coexist with the inactive strategy. We also observe that the standard deviation sigma2/N is significantly reduced, thus the efficiency of the system is distinctly improved. Based on this observation, we give a qualitative explanation for the long-range volatility correlations.

Resonant electron transfer and luminescent enhancement in a toluene suspension of Si nanocrystals.

Efficient resonant electron transfer from the surface bonding structure to the conduction band of quantum confined Si nanocrystals is observed by Si nanocrystals in a toluene suspension. Based on the electron transfer mechanism, the enhancement of photoluminescence originates from the band-to-band recombination in the p-type Si nanocrystals suspended in a toluene solution. The energy levels of the electrons in the Si nanocrystals chemisorbed with toluene molecules are calculated using the method of linear combination of atomic orbitals, and the characteristics of the obtained density of states is in good agreement with the observed photoluminescence properties.

Photoluminescence from C60-coupled porous structures formed on Fe+-implanted silicon.

111-oriented p-type Si wafer with a resistivity of 1-5 Omega cm was implanted with Fe+ and then annealed at 1100 degrees C in N2 for 60 min, followed by anodization in a solution of HF to form porous structure with beta-FeSi2 nanocrystallites. Photoluminescence (PL) spectral measurements show that a strong PL peak appears in the range of 610-670 nm. The position of the PL peak remains unchanged, but its intensity increases with the storage time in air until about three months and then saturates. C60 molecules were chemically coupled on the porous structure through a kind of silane coupling agent to form a nanocomposite. It is revealed that the stable PL peak monotonically shifts to a pinning wavelength at 570 nm. Experimental results from PL, PL excitation, Raman scattering, and x-ray diffraction measurements clearly show that the pinned PL originates from optical transition in C60-related defect states, whereas the photoexcited carriers occur in the beta-FeSi2 nanocrystallites formed during anodization. This work opens a new way to tailor nanometer environment for seeking optimal luminescent properties.

Return-volatility correlation in financial dynamics.

We investigate the return-volatility correlation both local and nonlocal in time with daily and minutely data of the German DAX and Chinese indices, and observe a leverage effect for the German DAX, while an antileverage effect for the Chinese indices. In the negative time direction, i.e., for the volatility-return correlation, an antileverage effect nonlocal in time is detected for both the German DAX and Chinese indices, although the duplicate local in time does not exist. A retarded volatility model may describe the asymmetric properties of the financial indices in the positive time direction.

Generation of watt-level single-longitudinal-mode output from cladding-pumped short fiber lasers.

We generate as much as 1.6 W of continuous-wave 1550 nm single-longitudinal-mode output from a cladding pumped Er-Yb codoped phosphate fiber laser. This power is to our knowledge among the highest in single-longitudinal-mode fiber lasers. The narrowband fiber Bragg grating output coupler is demonstrated to be an effective element for providing the single-longitudinal-mode selection.

We report fabrication and testing of the first phosphate glass microstructured fiber lasers with large Er-Yb-codoped cores. For an 11-cm-long cladding-pumped fiber laser, more than 3 W of continuous wave output power is demonstrated, and near single-mode beam quality is obtained for an active core area larger than 400 microm2.

Experimental evidence for the quantum confinement effect in 3C-SiC nanocrystallites.

Using electrochemical etching of a polycrystalline 3C-SiC target and subsequent ultrasonic treatment in water solution, we have fabricated suspensions of 3C-SiC nanocrystallites that luminesce. Transmission electron microscope observations show that the 3C-SiC nanocrystallites, which uniformly disperse in water, have sizes in the range of 1-6 nm. Photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation spectral examinations show clear evidence for the quantum confinement of 3C-SiC nanocrystallites with the emission band maximum ranging from 440 to 560 nm. Tunable, composite polystyrene/SiC film can be made by adding polystyrene to a toluene suspension of the 3C-SiC nanocrystallites and then coating the resulting solution onto a Si wafer.

Allopolyploidy in wheat induces rapid and heritable alterations in DNA methylation patterns of cellular genes and mobile elements.

Whereas accumulating recent evidences indicate that allopolyploid formation in plants is accompanied by rapid and non-Mendelian genomic changes, some other works showed genomic stasis in both nascent and natural allopolyploids. To further study the issue, we performed global DNA fingerprinting of a newly synthesized allohexaploid wheat and its natural counterpart, the common wheat, by AFLP analysis. It was found that ca. 20% bands showed deviation from parental additivity in both synthetic and the natural common wheat. Sequence analysis indicates that a majority of the changed bands represent known-function genes and transposable elements. DNA gel blot analysis showed that the main type of changes in the amphiploid is epigenetic in nature, i.e., alteration in DNA methylation patterns. Two types of alterations in methylation, random and non-random, were detected, and both types were stably inherited. Possible causes and implications of the epigenetic changes in allopolyploid genome evolution and speciation are discussed.

Two-phase phenomena, minority games, and herding models.

The recently discovered two-phase phenomenon in financial markets [Nature 421, 130 (2003)] is examined with the German financial index DAX, minority games, and dynamic herding models. It is observed that the two-phase phenomenon is an important characteristic of financial dynamics, independent of volatility clustering. An interacting herding model correctly produces the two-phase phenomenon.

Non-linear transform-based robust adaptive latency change estimation of evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVES: To improve the latency change estimation of evoked potentials (EP) under the lower order alpha-stable noise conditions by proposing and analyzing a new adaptive EP latency change detection algorithm (referred to as the NLST). METHODS: The NLST algorithm is based on the fractional lower order moment and the nonlinear transform for the error function. The computer simulation and data analysis verify the robustness of the new algorithm. RESULTS: The theoretical analysis shows that the iteration equation of the NLST transforms the lower order alpha-stable process en (k) into a second order moment process by a nonlinear transform. The simulations and the data analysis showed the robustness of the NLST under the lower order alpha-stable noise conditions. CONCLUSIONS: The new algorithm is robust under the lower order alpha-stable noise conditions, and it also provides a better performance than the DLMS, DLMP and SDA algorithms without the need to estimate the alpha value of the EP signals and noises.

Complete nucleotide sequence of the S10 genome segment of grass carp reovirus (GCRV).

Hemorrhagic disease, caused by the grass carp reovirus (GCRV), is one of the major diseases of grass carp in China. Little is known about the structure and function of the gene segments of this reovirus. The S10 genome segment of GCRV was cloned and the complete nucleotide sequence is reported here. The S10 is 909 nucleotides long and contains a large open reading frame (ORF) encoding a protein of 276 amino acids with a deduced molecular weight of approximately 29.7 kDa. Comparisons of the deduced amino acid sequence of GCRV S10 with those of other reoviruses revealed no significant homologies. However, GCRV S10 shared a putative zinc-finger sequence and a similar distribution of hydrophilic motifs with the outer capsid proteins encoded by Coho salmon aquareovirus (SCSV) S10, striped bass reovirus (SBRV) S10, and mammalian reovirus (MRV) S4. It was predicted that this segment gene encodes an outer capsid protein.

Molecular characterization and expression of the M6 gene of grass carp hemorrhage virus (GCHV), an aquareovirus.

The complete nucleotide sequence of M6 gene of grass carp hemorrhage virus (GCHV) was determined. It is 2039 nucleotides in length and contains a single large open reading frame that could encode a protein of 648 amino acids with predicted molecular mass of 68.7 kDa. Amino acid sequence comparison revealed that the protein encoded by GCHV M6 is closely related to the protein mu1 of mammalian reovirus. The M6 gene, encoding the major outer-capsid protein, was expressed using the pET fusion protein vector in Escherichia coli and detected by Western blotting using chicken anti-GCHV immunoglobulin (IgY). The result indicates that the protein encoded by M6 may share a putative Asn-42-Pro-43 proteolytic cleavage site with mu1.

Genome segment S8 of grass carp hemorrhage virus encodes a virion protein.

The complete nucleotide sequence of the genome segment S8 of grass carp hemorrhage virus (GCHV) was determined from cDNA corresponding to the viral genomic RNA. It is 1,287 nucleotides in length and contains a large open reading frame that could encode a protein of 409 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 44 kD. The S8 was expressed using the pET fusion protein vector and detected by Western blotting analysis using the chicken egg IgY against intact GCHV particles, indicating that S8 encodes a virion protein. Amino acid sequence comparisons revealed that the protein encoded by S8 is closely related to protein sigma2 of mammalian reovirus, suggesting that the deduced protein of S8 is an inner capsid protein.

Integrin expression during epithelial migration and restratification in the tenascin-C-deficient mouse cornea.

In the unwounded cornea, tenascin-C localizes to a short stretch of the basement membrane zone at the corneoscleral junction or limbus. To determine whether the function of the limbus is affected by the absence of tenascin-C, mice possessing a deletion of tenascin-C and strain-matched wild-type mice are used in corneal debridement wounding experiments. The expression of integrins (alpha3, alpha9, and beta4) in the tenascin-C knockout corneas is evaluated by producing polyclonal cytoplasmic domain antipeptide sera and performing immunofluorescence microscopy. In addition, we evaluate the localization of several other proteins involved in wound healing, including fibronectin, laminin beta1, nidogen/entactin, and VCAM-1, in both the tenascin knockout and wild-type mice. There are no differences in healing rate, scarring, or neovascularization after corneal debridement wounds. alpha9 integrin is expressed at the limbal border of unwounded tenascin-C knockout animals and is upregulated during migration only after the larger wounds. At 8 weeks after larger wounds, the localization of alpha9 again becomes restricted to the limbal border. Results show that tenascin-C is not required for development or maintenance of the corneal limbus or for normal re-epithelialization of corneal epithelial cells after debridement wounding.

Injury detection for central nervous system via EEG with higher order crossing-based methods.

Higher order crossing (HOC) is a powerful tool for time series analysis. Two HOC-based EEG analysis methods are developed for brain injury detection and quantification. The first method explores EEG spectrum characteristics via an estimate of the dominant frequency of a pre-processed EEG signal. The second method is based on the norm of the AHOC, an HOC obtained from the alpha-filter prefiltered EEG signal. Both methods are shown to be effective in detecting hypoxic/asphyxic injuries as well as assessing the severity of the injury.

Adaptive estimation of latency change in evoked potentials by direct least mean p-norm time-delay estimation.

Evoked potentials (EP) have been widely used to quantify neurological system properties. Changes in EP latency may indicate impending neurological injury. Traditional EP analyses are developed under the condition that the background noise in EP analysis are Gaussian distributed. This paper proposes a latency change detection and estimation algorithm under alpha-stable noise condition, a generalization of Gaussian noise assumption. An analysis shows that the alpha-stable model fits the noises found in the impact acceleration experiment under study better than the Gaussian model. The robustness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through computer simulations and experimental data analysis under both Gaussian and alpha-stable noise environments.

Latency change estimation for evoked potentials via frequency selective adaptive phase spectrum analyzer.

This paper addresses the problem of detecting and estimating latency changes in evoked potentials (EP's). EP's have been widely used to quantify neurological system properties. Transient and time-varying changes in latency may indicate impending neurological injury. Traditional time averaging and correlation methods for EP latency estimation are inefficient under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and/or strong periodic interference conditions. This paper proposes an adaptive phase spectral time delay estimation method to detect and estimate the time-varying latency changes when both the SNR and the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) are low. A theoretical analysis and computer simulation demonstrate that the proposed method can track the time-varying latency changes effectively and accurately when both the SNR and the SIR are as low as -5 dB. The method is also suitable for real time detection and estimation of the latency changes.
