In severe liver trauma the selective ligation of a lobar branch of the hepatic artery is proposed as an alternative to hepatic resection. The relatively simple procedure stops bleeding efficiently without damaging the liver function, as a collateral circulation is reestablished within 2 weeks.
Three cases of spontaneous rupture of the spleen in patients which were on long-term anticoagulant therapy are reported. In patients with the trias faulty coagulation, signs of hemorrhagic shock and of peritonitis in the upper abdominal part the possibility of a spontaneous rupture of the spleen must be considered. The diagnosis can then be confirmed by a positive peritoneal lavage. Once the diagnosis is made, the therapy is splenectomy.

A consecutive series of 435 fresh fractures of the tibial shaft was internally fixed by the new dynamic compression plate (ASIF-DCP). All but 2 cases could be reviewed personally within 1-2 years after operation, while 15 patients had died. The functional results and postoperative complications are reported separately for the 334 closed and 101 open fractures. In spite of a higher rate of complication in the open fractures, their functional results were about as good as in the closed cases. In our experience the new dynamic compression plate proved to be very satisfactory for internal fixation of fractures of the tibia.

The results of treatment in 13 bilateral lower leg fractures due to skiing accidents are presented. All patients were treated by internal fixation according to the principles of the Swiss Association for the Study of Internal Fixation. The patients on the average were mobilized after nine days, discharged after 24 days, started to use walking braces after 17 days, and undertook partial weight bearing 10 weeks and full weight bearing 14 weeks after the accident.
An account is given of 216 cases of fracture of the ankle joint treated with the AO method. 167 patients with 168 fractures could be controlled personally 3-4 years after operative treatment. In 90% we found a good or satisfactory result. The result depends on the anatomical reconstruction of the congruity of the joint and the primary defect of the cartilage. The arthrosis seen in X-rays must not show a bad clinical function. Contrary to the experimental results the form of the talus is not important to the clinical course.
