Human leukocyte A and B antigen, gene and haplotype frequencies in the population of the city of São Paulo in Brazil.

1. Antigen, gene and haplotype frequencies are important data for population analysis, paternity exclusion testing, genetic studies, and for organ transplantation selection. 2. We have studied the Class I histocompatibility antigens of 617 unrelated individuals from the city of São Paulo, Brazil, to determine antigen and gene frequencies of 16 HLA-A and 28 HLA-B antigens. Estimated haplotype frequencies were also determined, as well as the genetic distances of this population from European Caucasian and Negro populations. 3. A previously unknown linkage disequilibrium was detected for A23-B49 and a clear trend towards antigen frequencies intermediate between Caucasoid and Negro populations was observed.

Familial coarctation of the aortic arch with bilateral ptosis: a new syndrome?

A Newfoundland family with the apparently unique syndrome of complex coarctation of the aortic arch, bilateral stenoses of the subclavian arteries, bilateral ptosis, sensorineural deafness, and bronchial asthma is reported. This syndrome appears to have affected at least four generations, and has the characteristics of autosomal dominant inheritance.

Systemic effects of mydriatics in low weight infants.

Two-and-a-half percent phenylephrine eye drops were used in combination with 0.5% tropicamide for routine pupillary dilation in 10 low weight infants. Significant systolic blood pressure elevation was noted in eight of 10 infants. A matched control group dilated with cycloplegics alone did not show a significant rise in systolic blood pressure. The mean change in pupillary dilation in the study group was 3.9 mm compared with 3.1 mm in the control group. This difference is not statistically significant. We therefore recommend that cycloplegic agents alone be used for pupillary dilation in these high risk infants.
