Occurrence of carotenoids and sporopollenin in Nanochlorum eucaryotum, a novel marine alga with unusual characteristics.

Pigment analysis of Nanochlorum eucaryotum on two strains grown under different gaseous conditions was performed. Air-gassed control cultures did not differ qualitatively with respect to the content of chlorophylls a and b, carotenes alpha and beta, lutein, violaxanthin, neoxanthin and cryptoxanthin in comparison with cultures grown under natural gas. The absolute pigment content per cell increased in cultures grown with natural gas. Growth of N. eucaryotum depends on CO2 which is present in concentrations up to 2.0 vol% in natural gas. N. eucaryotum cannot utilize methane and is therefore not methylotrophic. In cultures of N. eucaryotum grown with natural gas and in air-gassed cultures under nitrogen deficient conditions the secondary carotenoids canthaxanthin and astaxanthin could be detected. In air-gassed cultures of strain N. eucaryotum Colona the same secondary carotenoids have been found, while secondary carotenoids were never found in strain N. eucaryotum Mainz. Cell walls of N. eucaryotum always contain sporopollenin as confirmed by isolation, elemental analysis, infrared absorption spectrophotometry, acetolysis-resistance and electron microscopy.

[Neonatal emergency: bupivacaine poisoning following maternal caudal anesthesia].

After maternal caudal anesthesia with bupivacaine life-threatening symptoms of bupivacaine intoxication occurred in the newborn. The local anesthetic had been injected directly into the fetal scalp. Cardiac shock caused by sinus bradycardia and impaired intracardial conduction (wide QRS-complex) was treated successfully. Seizures were absent. The bupivacain plasma level 90 min post partum was 3.6 mg/l, the elimination half-life 14 h. The symptoms presented in the newborn--especially the cardiovascular changes--coincide well with the results of animal experiments reported in the literature.

The effects of a personal phone call prompt on blood donor commitment.

There is a need to investigate procedures that can motivate individuals to attend blood drives. Low rates of attendance are partly due to the failure of many to fulfill their pledges to donate blood. This study examined the use of personal phone calls to prompt college-age blood donors to fulfill their commitments. The results indicated that a remainder call was effective in prompting pledged donors to attend a college drive. The phone call prompt might have been effective because of the social pressure which the recruiter exerted on the donors. Implications of these findings for blood donor recruitment efforts as well as the field of community psychology are discussed.

Familial occurrence of dermatomyositis and progressive scleroderma after injection of a local anaesthetic for dental treatment.

In an 11-year-old boy severe dermatomyositis occurred a few days after injection in the jaw of a local anaesthetic of the amide type for tooth extraction. The patient's grandmother was affected by progressive scleroderma at the age of 34 years, also after injection of a local anaesthetic for dental treatment. Both cases are discussed with special reference to the immuno-genetic aspects of the origin of dermatomyositis.

Prenatal ultrasonic prediction of autopsy-proven pulmonary hypoplasia.

The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for ultrasound estimation of fetal chest circumference in relation to autopsy-proven pulmonary hypoplasia are described in 58 singleton pregnancies at risk (39 with associated preterm premature rupture of the membranes at 30 weeks' gestation or less and of 12 or more days' duration, and 19 with associated anomalies). The ultrasonographic diagnosis of pulmonary hypoplasia was based on values at or below the lower limit of the 95% confidence intervals (for predicting a future observation) for normal pregnancies for each of the following tests; chest circumference in relation to gestational age and to femur length, for the chest circumference to abdominal circumference ratio and for a combination of the three measurements. At necropsy, the diagnosis of pulmonary hypoplasia was based on lung weight to birthweight ratio or radial alveolar counts. Pulmonary hypoplasia was diagnosed in 16 cases at autopsy. The clinicians and the pathologist were blinded to the ultrasonographic measurements. All tests performed well with a sensitivity of 0.55 to 0.80, specificity of 0.90 to 1.00, positive predictive value of 0.80 to 1.00, negative predictive value of 0.87 to 0.91, and an overall accuracy of 0.87 to 0.91. We conclude that ultrasound measurement of fetal chest circumference is of value with regard to the management of pregnancies at risk for lethal pulmonary hypoplasia.

[Transitory prolongation of QT time in severely ill premature and newborn infants].

Over 24 months in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit 118 electrocardiograms were recorded in the first three days of life. 12 preterm and term newborns had a corrected QT-time-prolongation over 0.44 s. Measurement of the ionized calcium level in these children revealed hypocalcemia in only four as a reason for QT-time-prolongation. One child had hypokalemia, one child suffered from accidental Bupivacain injection. In the other six children no known reasons for QT-time-prolongation could be found. The QT-time-prolongation persisted for a maximum of three months, no inherited QT-syndrome existed. We discuss a correlation of these transitory QT-time-prolongation with asphyxia which preexisted in all six children. Influences on catecholamine receptors of myocardium or changes in central sympathicotonus may be assumed.

Hydrops fetalis and neonatal leukemia in Down syndrome.

Four newborn infants with Down syndrome and manifestations of neonatal leukemia are described. One of the four was stillborn, two died shortly after birth, and a fourth survived and all evidence of leukemia disappeared in the first month of life. Three of the four cases had hydrops fetalis, and a fourth was a macerated stillborn. Nine other similar reported cases are reviewed. We conclude that neonatal leukemia in Down syndrome is a form of leukemia that is usually transient, with spontaneous recovery, but may be fatal at or around the time of birth with manifestations of hydrops fetalis, hepatosplenomegaly, and/or progressive liver disease.

Telematics in research planning processes: an example from global health.

It is increasingly recognized that the appropriate application of information and communication technology can substantially improve communication and cooperative work processes in terms of quantity, quality and cost-effectiveness. Within large organizations, strategic decision making is one of the key cooperative processes which have to be faced. In this paper the authors discuss one example of this class of cooperative processes: research planning within the World Health Organization (WHO). The paper presents conceptual details of a process designed to assist in creating global networks of scientists, planners and field workers interested in cooperating to promote health development activities of WHO. The implementation of this process was realized in an Internet-based system to support global research planning. In particular, this application shows that the utilization of information and communication technology can not only quantitatively change existing processes, but can create new ones--and on a qualitatively improved level.
