To assess the feasibility and accuracy of measuring cardiac outputs (CO) by two-dimensional (2-D) pulsed Doppler echocardiography, taking samples at the main pulmonary artery just beyond the pulmonary valve, 62 cardiac patients were studied. The results obtained were compared with CO values determined by the thermodilution technique. 2-D Doppler echocardiograms suitable for computing CO were recorded in 37 (60%) of 62 patients. A significant correlation (r = 0.64) was observed between 2-D echocardiographic and angiographic pulmonary ring diameters (PRD), but the echocardiographic PRD was smaller than that of angiography by 0.4 +/- 0.2 cm. Thus, to compute the Doppler CO, the echocardiographic PRD had to be corrected by the difference between the angiographic and echocardiographic PRD. The angle between the ultrasound beam and the pulmonary blood flow was 7.8 +/- 6.1 degrees (0 approximately 18 degrees), and this was negligible for computing the Doppler CO. Even in cases with atrial fibrillation, the Doppler CO could be computed as is done in sinus rhythm. The correlation between the thermodilution and Doppler CO was highly significant (r = 0.92), and the regression equation was as follows: Thermodilution CO = 1.09 X (Doppler CO)-0.19 The difference between thermodilution and Doppler CO was 3.4 +/- 10.0% (-21 approximately +21%). Comparing the differences in CO between the thermodilution and dye-dilution techniques, those between thermodilution and the Fick methods, and those among thermodilution methods reported in the literatures, the difference in this study was not large and was acceptable. Thus, measurement of CO by pulsed Doppler echocardiography, with sampling entrance to the main pulmonary artery, can be used clinically.
The mechanism of enhanced resistance of Mycobacterium bovis BCG-treated mice to ectromelia virus infection was investigated by determining the effect of splenectomy, antithymocyte serum, and antimacrophage serum on resistance. It was greatly reduced by these treatments, not only in normal mice, but also in mice treated with live or heat-inactivated BCG. Production of circulating interferon by ectromelia virus and Newcastle disease virus was augmented in BCG-treated mice and was markedly depressed by splenectomy and antithymocyte and antimacrophage serum treatments in both BCG-treated and normal mice. Carbon clearance activity was activated in BCG-treated mice, but splenectomy did not influence phagocytic activity. These results suggest that augmented interferon production in the spleens of BCG-treated mice plays a major role in enhanced resistance. Other possible mechanisms are discussed.
Electron microscopic observation was made on the peripheral blood cells obtained from a 4-year-old boy with generalized ceroid-lipofuscinosis (GCL), and two kinds of significant inclusions were found in the cytoplasm of lymphocytes. One was ceroid-lipofuscin accompanied with the fingerprint pattern, and the other was a lamellar body which showed the concentric lamellar structure or the myelin figure. Ceroid-lipofuscin was found in 40% of peripheral lymphocytes. It is important in diagnosing GCL that ceroid-lipofuscin can be detected with high incidence in lymphocytes of peripheral blood.

The tongue movements during the production of Japanese speech sounds in five patients with anterior openbite associated with 1-5 mm of overjet were investigated using dynamic palatography and cinematography. The dynamic palatograph is an electric device capable of recording constantly changing palatolingual contact as a function of time by use of a thin plastic artificial palate equipped with 63 electrodes. As a result, the following articulatory characteristics were observed during the utterance of the Japanese sounds /s/,/f/,/t/,/d/,/n/,/r/,/ts/,/tf/,/dz/,/d3/. (1) The area of maximal palatolingual contacts was smaller than the normal. (2) Forward positioning of the tongue was confirmed in all cases. (3) The interruption of the breath stream was made with the dorsal surface of the tongue and the maxillary anterior teeth. (4) The sounds /s/,/f/,/dz/,/d3/, were recognized as distorted sound as /theta/, in English.
We have developed a technique for an immediate bone graft utilizing the anterior part of the ascending ramus for repair of bone defects resulting from resection. We applied this operative procedure to a case of an extensive ossifying fibroma of the mandible. As a result, the postoperative x-ray examination showed a well-restored shape of the mandible, and the postoperative function was excellent.

The binding capacities of SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) and ER (estrogen receptor) were measured by agar gel electrophoresis with dextran-coated charcoal treatment and also by sucrose density gradient ultracentrifugation in the sera from 19 women with breast cancer to assay the correlation between SHBG and ER in breast cancer. SHBG levels were also measured by agar gel electrophoresis with dextran-coated charcoal treatment in control sera from 20 normal women. Two kinds of 17 beta-estradiol-binding substances were recognized in the cytosol of breast cancer cells and they were confirmed to be ER and SHBG. Out of 13 postmenopausal patients with breast cancer, the SHBG levels in 6 ER-positive cases (66 +/- 13 pmol/ml plasma, mean +/- SD) were significantly higher than the levels of 10 controls (35 +/- 7.6 pmol/ml; P less than 0.005). SHBG levels in 7 ER-negative patients (34 +/- 7.9 pmol/ml plasma) did not significantly differ from the levels of the controls, but differed significantly from the levels of ER-positive patients (P less than 0.005). Out of 6 premenopausal breast cancer patients, the SHBG levels in 5 ER-positive cases (63 +/- 7.5 pmol/ml plasma) tended to be higher than the levels in 10 controls (55 +/- 4.7 pmol/ml plasma), but did not achieve statistical significance (P greater than 0.05). The findings suggest that correlation between SHBG and ER in postmenopausal breast cancer is possible, but no significant difference was noted between the SHBG levels in ER-positive premenopausal breast cancer patients and premenopausal normal women.

Neurovirulent TYCSA strain and attenuated Schwarz strain of measles virus and Halle strain of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus replicated in cultures of human lymphoid cell lines of the T-cell type, MOLT-3, MOLT-4 and CCRF-CEM. TYCSA and Halle strains grew rapidly, but Schwarz strain grew slowly in these cell lines. Furthermore, these three strains established persistent infection in CCRF-CEM cells but not in the other cell lines. In these persistently infected cultures an almost entire population of cells were shown to be infected and infectious virus was produced constantly for over 100 days. Cells persistently infected with Schwarz strain contained nucleocapsid structures in both the nucleus and cytoplasm and produced low titered infectious virus, whereas nucleocapsid structures were observed only in the cytoplasm of cells persistently infected with either TYCSA or Halle strain and the titers of infectious virus produced from these cells were high.
Human lymphoid cells (NC-37) were infected with attenuated measles vaccine virus (Schwarz, AIK-C, and CAM-70 strains), subacute sclerosing panencephalitis virus (Mantooth and Halle strains), neurovirulent TYCSA strain, and wild type virus (Edmonston and Toyoshima strains) at an input multiplicity of 0-01. These strains were divided into two groups by their capacity to establish carrier states. CAM-70, Toyoshima, and Edmonston strains did not set up persistent infections in NC-37 cells, whereas AIK-C strain induced chronic cyclic infection and the Schwarz, TYCSA, Mantooth and Halle strains could set up persistent infections and furthermore two types of persistent infections were recognizable. Cells persistently infected with Schwarz strain contained nucleocapsid structures in both nucleus and cytoplasm, and produced infectious virus of 10(4) to 10(5) p.f.u./ml over 100 days after the inoculation of the virus but the cap-formation of measles antigens on the cell membrane was seldom observed. However, in cells persistently infected with TYCSA strain, nucleocapsid structures were rarely observed in the nucleus, but the cap-formation of measles antigens on the cell membrane was often observed. The titre of carried virus was always higher than the number of cells in the range of 10(6) to 10(7) p.f.u./ml. Mantooth strain was similar to Schwarz strain and Halle strain was similar to TYCSA strain in the properties of their carrier states. These carrier states were stable and the cells grew normally for over one year.
