Vitamin D status and bone mineral density of veiled and unveiled Turkish women.

The aim of the study is to compare vitamin D status and bone mineral density (BMD) in veiled and unveiled healthy Turkish women of reproductive age. Thirty young to middle-aged volunteer veiled women and 30 age-matched control subjects with western clothing habits were enrolled in the study. The two groups had similar dietary habits, body mass index (BMI) distribution, and gestational history. Physical and laboratory examinations were performed to rule out any disease that could affect bone metabolism. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) levels were measured, and BMD of the spine and hip were investigated by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The mean age of dressing the veil was 15.7 +/- 6.13 years, and 66.7% of the veiled women claimed that they were not ever exposed to direct sunlight, as they were leading an indoor life. Compared with the control group, veiled women were less educated and physically less active (p < 0.001 and p < 0.05, respectively). 25-OHD levels were positively correlated with exposure to sunlight and negatively correlated with the duration of being veiled. None of the veiled women had vitamin D insufficiency, but their mean 25-OHD concentration (33.1 +/- 16 ng/ml) was significantly lower than that of controls (53.9 +/- 27.3 ng/ml) (p < or = 0.001), and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were higher (p < 0.01). Differences in the absolute BMD values at the spine and hip were not statistically significant, but the mean Z value at the lumbar spine was significantly lower in the veiled subjects (p < 0.05). Veiled women have low 25-OHD status, and vitamin D supplementation should strictly be advised to these women for the prevention of osteomalacia and osteoporosis.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy following neck dissections.

PURPOSE: Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), which is a disorder that occurs after injury or surgery on the extremities, has not been reported as a complication of neck dissections until now. A group patients with head and neck cancer have been examined to determine the incidence of RSD in neck dissections. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients with head and neck cancer, who had undergone neck dissections together with the removal of the primary tumor, were evaluated for RSD on their routine controls. RESULT AND CONCLUSION: The presentation of RSD in two patients who were treated with radical neck dissection is probably a result of sympathetic hyperactivity that is secondary to surgical trauma.

The effects of daily pulmonary rehabilitation program at home on childhood asthma.

OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of pulmonary rehabilitation program in children with asthma. PATIENTS AND METHOD: twenty eight children with mild persistent or moderate asthma were included into a double blind, randomised study. Sixteen children (9 girls, 7 boys) with the mean age of 10.8 +/- 2.3 were assigned to receive pulmonary rehabilitation program with their parents for 30 days (group I). Control group included 12 children (6 girls, 6 boys ) with the mean age of 10.2 +/- 2.4 (group II). Symptom and medication scores quality of life index and pulmonary function tests were evaluated in rehabilitation and control group in the beginning of the study and after the one month period. RESULTS: the groups did not differ on all parameters before the study (p > 0. 05). Statistically significant decrease were found in symptom and medication scores in rehabilitation group (p < 0.05) and quality of life index was increased significantly in the same group (p < 0.05). Pulmonary function measures also significantly improved including vital capacity, forced vital capacity, FEV1, PEF and FEF25-75 in the rehabilitation group (p < 0.05). The best improvement were seen in FEF25-75 (10.09% increase) and PEF (7.81% increase) values. In control group no statistically significant differences were found in all parameters. CONCLUSION: in this study it was shown that daily pulmonary rehabilitation at home could improve quality of life and pulmonary functions. So pulmonary rehabilitation should be placed as a component of management in childhood asthma.
