Low-vision aids in Stargardt's disease.

Fifteen patients with juvenile macular degeneration fitted with low-vision aids were followed up for a period of two to three years. About 80% of the patients equipped with visual aids used their devices successfully. It appears that in Stargardt's disease, low-vision aids are more useful than in other maculopathies.

Granular cell tumor (myoblastoma) of the eyebrow.

Granular cell tumor (Myoblastoma) is a tumor of controversial nature that rarely appears in the ocular adnexa. A 37-year-old man with such a tumor in his right eyebrow is reported, and the relevant literature is reviewed.

Bilateral morning glory syndrome with midline brain lesion in an autistic child.

A ten-year-old autistic boy with high myopia and very poor vision presented a bilateral anomaly of the disc, diagnosed as morning glory syndrome. Further investigation showed an absence of the corpus callosum and probably herniation of an encephalocele into the third ventricle. The association of bilateral morning glory syndrome and very low visual acuity in both eyes with a midline brain lesion and autism has not been previously described.

[Sympathetic ophthalmitis associated with cystic epithelial invasion of the anterior chamber. A clinical case].

A 9-year-old girl presented with sympathetic ophthalmitis associated with secondary glaucoma from cystic epithelial invasion of the anterior chamber. Treatment with immunosuppressants (Imuran) and corticoid therapy for eight months cured the uveitis, and surgical excision of the epithelial cyst was then undertaken. The problems related to therapy of penetrating wounds of the ocular globe are discussed.

Lamellar keratoplasty in keratoconus.

The authors present the results of 11 keratoplasties in cases of keratoconus, comparing the visual acuity and the ocular refraction before and after the operation (ophtalmometry, objective and subjective refractometry). The statistical data indicate a meaningful flattening of the corneal curvature (12.84 dpt average) and a mean reduction of the myopia for 8.227 dpt. In fact, the basic regular astigmatism of the cornea had not been altered. The mean visual acuity was 0.68 (with an improvement of 0.495). No further damage of acuity had been observed. After 10 to 69 months a medical checkup revealed transparent grafts in five cases; four presented small maculae; one, thin folds of Descemet's membrane. Based on the authors' experience and on the literature, the paper recommends lamellar keratoplasty in cases of keratoconus, the surgeon must choose the appropriate moment in the course of the development of this disease.

[34 epibulbar malignant tumours (author's transl)].

Based on a study of 34 cases, the authors make therapeutical and diagnostical references concerning the epibulbar malignant tumours. These were met with a frequency of 10% of the total amount of the malignant tumours of the visual apparatus. The most frequent setting were at the level of the bulbar conjunctiva and of the sclero-corneal limb, especially in front of the opening of the palpebral slit and in the temporal area. The histological examination of the tumours pointed out the following morphological types; epitheliomas (61%), especially spino-cellular, malignant melanomas (32%) and sarcomas (6%). The therapeutical attitude was the surgical one -- the accurate extirpation -- in the limited tumours, followed by radiotherapy when neoplasic lesions were found at the limit of section. In the invaded tumours, the exenteration of the orbit was performed followed by radiotherapy. On the terms of such a therapeutical conduct, the distant prognosis proved to be dependent on two factors: a. The early diagnosis, that is the stage of the therapeutical action. It is insisted upon the importance of the signs of malignization of some benign tumors: papillomas or naevi. b. The nature and origin of the tumour: the secondary tumours are more severe from the beginning.

[A traumatic glaucoma by epithelial invasion of the anterior chamber (author's transl)].

Taking into account the latest data described in the specialized literature, the authors present a clinical case of secondary traumatic glaucoma which was determined by a cystical shaped epithelial invasion of the anterior chamber. The patient was subjected to a surgical intervention and the final result was successful. The diagnosis and the treatment of these cases are discussed. The authors underline the importance of the correct treatment of the penetrated traumatisms of the eyeball.

[Diagnostic and therapeutic problems in a clinical case of oculoauricular dysplasia associated with mandibule-facial dysostosis (Franceschetti-Goldenhar syndrome)].

The authors present a case of oculo-auricular dysplasia (type Goldenhar) associated with France-schetti's syndrome (mandibulo-facial dysostosis) and complicated by paralytic strabismus and genital malformations. Complete investigation failed to establish a precise aetiology; one suggests an external disturbance in the course of the organogenesis of the branchial arches. Aesthetic improvement was undertaken--removal of epibulbar dermoids, correction of the squint, and ablation of the preauricular appendages; functional orthodontic treatment continues.

[Considerations of malignant ocular tumours in children (author's transl)].

The authors undertake a clinico-anatomical study of 27 malignant tumours of the orbit and eye in children seen at the Ophthalmological Clinic in Jassy over the last 12 years. The majority (18 cases) were intra-ocular tumours which were clinically and anatomically retinoblastomas. After presenting the clinical symptoms, drawing attention to the signs of the disease presenting to paediatricians, the treatment is described. This was surgical in all cases followed by radiotherapy according to the case. Analysis of fatal cases and those which survived demonstrate certain degrees of seriousness in clinical, histopathological and therapeutic aspects. It can be appreciated that the long-term prognosis of these cases depends on the early diagnosis and the institution of the correct treatment as well as the anatomopathological form.
