The Aerodium hover sport facility in Eilat has been in operation for the past 4 years and 33 patients have been treated for injuries caused by falls while hovering. The Aerodium is a new sport facility in Israel, similar to others in the US and Switzerland. It includes a 4-meter-wide wind tunnel with air pushed vertically upwards toward its center. Air flow velocity is adjustable and ranges between 120 and 140 km/hr, with a maximum of approximately 180 km/hr. Participants wear special suits and jump into the center of the column of air to hover. The hover suits are very wide, and puff up like a balloon; the sleeves and leggings have vents through which air escapes. Participants hover with their arms spread out and their legs slightly spread apart. The inexperienced hover at a height about 2 m. and the more experienced at heights of up to 5 m. During falls the person hovering lands on air mattresses surrounding the air column. Failure to follow rules and procedures, usually while changing limb position during hovering, can unbalance the inexperienced participant and lead to uncontrolled spins and falls.
Sea urchins (Echinoidea) are found along the Mediterranean and especially the Red Sea coasts of Israel. The most important species are Diadema setosum on the Red Sea coast, and Paracentrus lividus on the Mediterranean. When stepped on, the brittle spines penetrate and the venom they carry causes further damage. Thus the injuries are mainly mechanical, but may be complicated by a foreign body reaction to the bits of spine, to small detached segments of their covering epithelium, and damage by the epithelial venom. Severe pain, edema, local sensory loss and sometimes suppuration ensue.
The natural iron chelator deferoxamine was bonded to agarose-polyacrolein microsphere beads (APAMB). This novel deferoxamine-conjugated APAMB (DCA), when used as the sorbent in a plasma/haemoperfusion system, showed specific and rapid removal of iron from plasma and blood in vitro; in vivo experiments also showed specific iron removal. The advantages of this sorbent are minimal damage to biocompounds during haemoperfusion, high capacity and specificity to iron, and the possibility of reuse.
16 reserve soldiers received an overdose of tetanus toxoid vaccine (5 ml instead of 0.5 ml) in error. We assessed the incidence and severity of adverse reactions and determined tetanus antibody titer immediately and after 5 days, 1 month and 1 year, and compared it with the titers in a control group of 20 soldiers. The incidence and severity of reactions was significantly higher in the overdose group. The mean tetanus antibody titer rose to similar levels in both groups after 1 month (153.75 +/- 82.5 IU/ml and 62.02 +/- 42.15 IU/ml respectively) but decreased sharply after 1 year in the overdose group.
This study examined the efficiency of walking with a backpack load as a method for improving physical fitness. Forty-four subjects (average age, 18.8 years) marched at a speed of 5 km/hr for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Thirty-two subjects walked for 3 weeks with a 3-kg backpack load; 6 subjects marched for 4 weeks with the same load; 6 subjects marched for 3 weeks with a 3-kg load, and with a 6-kg load during the fourth week. A statistically significant increase in aerobic work capacity (VO2max) was observed in all three groups, but was most pronounced in the last group.
