The polB gene encodes DNA polymerase II in Escherichia coli. The nucleotide sequence shows an open reading frame of 2,304 nucleotides coding for a protein of 88 kD. The protein initiation signal is preceded by a lexA box lying 2 nucleotides from the termination signal of araD, and begins with GUG 75 nucleotides after the termination of araD. The polB gene and the araD gene are transcribed in the same direction. Initiation of protein synthesis was confirmed by peptide sequence. We have also demonstrated that the polB sequence is lacking in some strains. We conclude that DNA polymerase II is not a required protein in the cell. Sequence comparisons show that DNA polymerase II is an alpha-like DNA polymerase.
We have studied the in vitro interaction of the LexA repressor protein and the uvrC regulatory region. We find that there is specific binding to two regions, the region we have defined as lexA1 and the lexA2-lexA3 region. Our findings support the possibility of an inducible regulation for this complex operon.

Cilofungin (LY121019) inhibited Candida albicans growth and activity of (1-3)-beta-glucan synthase, for which it was a noncompetitive inhibitor with a Ki-app of 2.5 microM. Cilofungin had no effect on chitin synthase activity. Based on these and other data, it seems likely that cilofungin inhibits fungal growth by inhibiting (1-3)-beta-glucan synthase activity.
We describe a methodology for systematically approaching patients with difficulties of a psychological and social nature. Definitions are given for various types of psychosomatic difficulties, and their origins are linked to two theoretical perspectives; namely, the sick role model and family systems theory. An approach to the assessment of the individual with regard to school, peer, and family relationships is offered, and methods of gathering information associated with the presenting complaint are described. Approaches to treatment are reviewed, and appropriate applications are suggested.
Interviews with minors at four Minnesota abortion clinics revealed that 43 percent used the court bypass option that is part of that state's parental notification statute. The proportion who did so increased with age and was most common among lower socioeconomic groups. A discriminant function analysis showed that perceived maternal supportiveness was a key difference between those who went to court and those who notified their parents. Young women who attended religious services frequently were less likely than those who did not tell their parents of their abortion plans. Minors who notified only one parent--and still had to go to court under Minnesota law, which requires notification of both parents--were more likely than those who told neither to come from a single-parent household and to have good communication with their mother.
