[Otoneurological aspects of tick-borne encephalitis].

In analysed material of 31 patients with TBE (tick borne encephalitis) we noticed symptoms evidence the impact of TBE virus vestibular system. We showed that 21 patients had disorders like dizziness and lack of balance. And 11 patients had inaudility of conductive and receiving type what was the evidence of injury of vestibular nerve. In these 11 patients we observed not normal recording of optokinetical reaction.

[Changes in ECG examination of patients with trichinosis].

In the years 1963-1992, 560 patients with the diagnosis of trichinosis were treated in the Department of Parasitic Diseases and Neuroinfections, including 310 women (55.3%) and 250 men (44.7%) aged from 6 to 75 years. Out of this number of patients in 59 cases (10.5%) myocardial damage was found in the course of the disease. The most frequently found changes in ECG record were ventricular repolarization disturbances (66.1%) which persisted in 18.6% of cases before discharge from the hospital. Depolarization disturbances accounted for 32.2% of cases and persisted before discharge from the hospital in 10.1% of patients. In 6.7% of patients, persistence of pathological ECG record was found during the 4th month after the hospitalization which may be an evidence of prolongation of the inflammatory process within the myocardium.

[Hepatic reactions in the course of viral meningoencephalitis in patients hospitalized in 1985-1989].

In the years 1985-1989 in a department for parasitic and occupational diseases in Białystok, 112 patients were hospitalized with the diagnosis of lymphocytic meningitis. The most common aetiological factor were viruses (30.6%), arboviruses (25.9%), and then herpes viruses (6.25%), and mumps virus (5.3%). In 36 patients (32%) no aetiological factor of the inflammatory process was established. In 22 patients (19.6%) a simultaneous hepatocellular damage was found in the form of jaundice (15 patients, that is 13.4%), and hepatomegaly in seven patients. The observed hepatic involvement was found in the group of patients with severe clinical course of meningitis. Most frequently hepatic reaction was observed in the group of lymphocytic meningitis caused by arboviruses. Among the biochemical indices of hepatocellular damage a significant increase in relation to normal value was found of serum bilirubin level (mean = 1.75 mg%; normally mean = 1.1 mg%), alanine aminotransferase activity was 2.5 times higher than the mean normal value (mean = 77.6 IU; normal value mean = 30 IU). The observed hepatic changes were transient and regressed together with the regression of acute inflammatory state in the central nervous system.

[Problems diagnosing cat scratch disease].

The diagnosis of cat scratch disease is hampered by the fact the basic laboratory investigations fail to demonstrate characteristic changes of this disease, and the diagnosis is based usually on epidemiological history and the clinical symptom complex. The diagnosis is confirmed by the complement binging test with the antigen obtained from pathologically changed lymph nodes with values over 1.5 being pathognomonic for the disease, and by the cutaneous tests of Hanger-Rose and Mollaret. The authors present 2 cases treated for the disease stressing differences in its course.

[Effect of differentiated diet therapy on the clinical results and biochemical indicators in chronic hepatic encephalopathy].

Effects of differentiated diet with reduced proteins or diet without proteins with simultaneous use of lactulose or the preparation enriched with aliphatic amino acids with aminosteril-hepa chain on the clinical results and the ammonia, phenols, alpha-amino nitrogen, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan++ concentrations in the serum have been studied. It has been demonstrated that limitations of proteins in the diet or diet without proteins with the use of lactulose or amino acids mixtures above does not influence significantly the clinical amelioration or biochemical indices of encephalopathy or coma during the liver cirrhosis course. Homogenates of the liver and brain of patients who died due to encephalopathy and liver cirrhosis showed high contents of ammonia, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan++.

[Studies of the effect of a protein-free diet and branched-chain amino acids (preparation Aminosteril-Hepa) on selected biochemical indicators in chronic experimental hepatic encephalopathy].

The latest observations suggest that a decreased level of serum branched-chain amino acids plays a role in the pathogenesis of liver encephalopathy. In this study we analysed the behaviour of the serum concentrations of: ammonia, phenols, alpha-amino nitrogen, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan in rats with thioacetamide-induced liver encephalopathy. The first group of rats was on protein-free diet and Aminosteril-Hepa (Fresenius FRG)--an amino acids solution with predominance of branched-chain amino acids. The second group of rats received a diet with 1 g/kg b.w. of protein daily. The levels of biochemical indices were analysed 0, 3, 5 and 7 days after liver encephalopathy development. The results of our study indicate a favourable influence of infusion a branched-chain amino acids solution (Aminosteril-Hepa) on the biochemical indices, particularly phenols and alpha-amino nitrogen in experimental liver encephalopathy.

[Histopathologic and biochemical evaluation of the effect of cortisone on the liver in experimental post-alcoholic liver damage in the rabbit].

Possible protective effects of cortisone in experimental post-alcohol liver damage were evaluated in relation to dose and duration of treatment. Model examinations were undertaken in 100 rabbits divided into groups of 10. No protective effect of cortisone could be demonstrated. Treatment did not alter biochemical indices of liver function. Histologic examination revealed somewhat less extensive fatty changes following chronic alcohol exposure in animals receiving 1 mg cortisone per kilogram body weight.

[Effect of alcohol on the development of biochemical and morphologic findings of liver damage in the rabbit].

Ethanol 48% was applied to the experimental model in 3 examined groups of rabbits in different periods of administration and differentiated daily doses on order to investigate the influence of ethanol upon the formation of morphological and biochemical indices of the liver lesion. Biochemical investigations were carried out on 3 and 7 day of the experiment and repeated at week by intervalls. All the animals were dissected and morphological examinations of the liver were carried out. Total analysis of the results obtained of the biochemical and morphological examinations of the liver in 3 analysed groups of animals proved that the biochemical index of postalcoholic lesion of the liver was a rise in guanase activity, and not in activity aminotransferases. In the investigations of fat balance, however the increase of triglycerides and cholesterol was observed. Morphological examinations showed post-alcoholic lesions of the liver, especially intensified in animals under longlasting alcohol influence, but in reducted doses.

[Lipid values and immune parameters in the course of viral hepatitis in patients with alcohol abuse and without alcohol stress in anamnesis].

The aim of the investigation was to estimate chosen parameters of fat balance and immunological reactivity in patients with virushepatitis and alcohol abuse (30 patients--I group), and without alcohol abuse in anamnesis (30 patients--II group). The investigations included the estimation of the presence of HBsAg in serum, the level of immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM, the determination of T and B lymphocytes, the presence of organ-autoantibodies (SMA, ANA, AMA), the level of free fatty acids, triglycerides, full lipids, beta-lipoproteins and cholesterol in the blood serum. The rise in full lipids content in the blood serum, beta-lipoproteins, triglycerides, the increase of IgA level, the decrease of lymphocytes T percentage, more frequent confirmation of the presence of antimitochondrial autoantibodies were noted, especially in the group of patients with virushepatitis and alcohol abuse. Disturbances in fat balance remain in the convalescence period.

[Chronic alcoholism and infection with hepatitis B virus].

The study Hepatitis-B-virus infection was performed in the population of chronic alcoholics (224 persons). Among this population the HBs-antigenemia was proved in 42%. The immunoglobulin dysproteinemia and coexistence of autoantibodies can indicate a symptomatic Hepatitis-B-virus infection.

Effect of cortisone on the behavior of serotonin, 5-hydroxy-indoloacetic acid and monoaminooxidase in the liver tissue, the blood and the urine in experimental rabbit liver injury with CCl4.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cortisone on the behavior of serotonin metabolism indicators in experiments carried out in rabbits. The following parameters were determined: the level of serotonin (5-hydroxy-tryptamine), (5-HT) in liver tissue and blood, the activity of monoamino-oxidase (MAO) in liver tissue and serum, and the level of 5-hydroxy-indoloacetic acid (5-HIAA) in liver tissue and in 24-hour urine of 52 rabbits. The experimental model involved acute liver injury with carbon tetrachloride--CCl4 and the effect of exogenous cortisone on the behavior of the above-mentioned indicators. On the basis of the experimental findings the authors demonstrate a dependence of serotonin metabolism on the liver injury, and an absence of normalization of the estimated parameters after cortisone administration.
