The effect of cigarette smoking on body sway, the everlasting displacement of the center of gravity while standing upright, was studied and smoking was found to induce an unusual, oscillatory body sway that was higher in frequency and greater in amplitude than that in controls and lasted in general for several minutes after smoking. This characteristic body oscillation was strongly suppressed by periodic, saccadic eye movements. These results suggest that nicotine absorbed into blood during smoking affects the structures in the brain stem related to the regulation of standing posture and the saccadic eye movement.
The lymphocyte transformation response to the allogeneic lymphocytes (mixed lymphocyte culture, MLC) was determined in nineteen well-controlled insulin-dependent diabetics (IDD) and nineteen matched normal subjects. All possible combinations between lymphocytes from the patients and controls were mixed in both one-way and two-way MLC. From the results of one-way MLC, the stimulatory capacity (SC) and responding capacity (RC) of IDD lymphocytes were compared with those of normal lymphocytes as follows: (1) Nm leads to N: 10,538 +/- 3,937 N; normal lymphocytes (2) Nm leads to D: 8;466 +/- 5,387 D; IDD lymphocytes (3) Dm leads to N: 7,562 +/- 3,088 m; mitomycin-treated stimulating lymphocytes (4) Dm leads to D: 7,102 +/- 4,873 (leads to; stimulatory direction, results; M +/- SD cpm) IDD lymphocytes showed a marked depressive function as stimulators (SC, (1) -- (3)), but the RC of IDD lymphocytes was unchanged ((1) -- (2)). Phytomitogen-response was studied simultaneously for the same responding lymphocytes (N, D) of MLC. IDD lymphocytes exhibited significantly decreased responses to phytohemagglutinin P, pokeweed mitogen and concanavalin A.
The body sway in upright standing was decreased by periodic saccades. The decrease was also observed during voluntary rapid eye movements in complete darkness, indicating that the visual information was not concerned with the decrease of the sway. Continuous eye rotations did not affect the body sway, showing that the repetitive activation of eye muscle proprioceptors was not the cause of the sway reduction. These results suggest that some information related to the execution of saccades may affect the spinal motor system and cause the stabilization of the standing posture.
The 125I-C1q binding test for the detection of soluble immune complexes in native unheated human serum was applied to the study of sera from 52 patients with diabetes mellitus in childhood. This radiolabeled C1q binding test is more sensitive and reproducible among the various methods proposed for the detection of immune complexes. The 125I-C1q binding activity in 52 sera from diabetes mellitus in childhood was 9.47 +/- 0.36% compared to 6.94 +/- 0.74% in normal controls. 125I-C1q binding values in diabetes mellitus in childhood were significantly higher than normal controls. Slight high values were seen in 3 patients with positive anti-DNA-antibodies in diabetes mellitus in childhood. 125I-C1q binding was not significantly increased in patients with positive antithyroid antibodies and insulin antibodies. There was no significant correlation between the duration of diabetes and 125I-C1q binding activity.

To investigate the role of peripheral blood lymphocytes in thyroid auto-immunity, the in vitro responsiveness to allogeneic lymphocytes (MLC) or phytomitogens was examined in the lymphocytes from patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The MLC responses of 16 patients were compared with those of age- and sex-matched normal controls. All possible combinations between lymphocytes from the patients and controls were mixed in both one-way and two-way MLC. From the results of one-way MLC, the stimulatory capacity and responding capacity of lymphocytes from the patients and controls were calculated respectively as follows: : formula: (see text) To the same allogeneic stimulation of Nm (mitomycin-treated stimulating lymphocytes from controls), lymphocytes from the patients (H) exhibited a lower response (P greater than 0.05) than did those from the controls (compare (1) with (3)). Phytomitogen-response was simultaneously studied for residual cells of MLC. Lymphocytes from the patients showed a significantly decreased (P less than 0.01) response to phytohemagglutinin-p and concanavalin A in comparison with the response of normal lymphocytes. From these results, it was suggested that cell-mediated immunity in vivo was impaired in Hishimoto's thyroiditis.
Cytokinin binding protein was isolated and purified from tobacco leaves by bioaffinity chromatography on a Sepharose column on which benzyladenine (BA), synthetic cytokinin, had been introduced as an affinity ligand by the cyanogen bromide method. The purified protein bound specifically to cytokinins; its binding was inhibited remarkably by the addition of BA and kinetin and slightly by adenine, but not by adenosine in vitro. The dissociation constant, Kd, of the protein-BA complex was about 4 x 10(-5)M. The profiles of SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and gel filtration indicate that the protein consisted of a single polypeptide chain. Amino acid analysis showed that the protein contained 4 basic, 6 acidic, and 25 neutral amino acids but lacked tryptophan. The molecular weight of the protein was determined to be about 4,000 to 5,000 daltons by gel filtration, SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and amino acid analysis. The coupling conditions of BA to Sepharose by the cyanogen bromide method are described and discussed.
