Single neuron analysis of the human midbrain tegmentum. Rostral mecencephalic reticulotomy for pain relief.

Rostral mesencephalic reticulotomy (RMR) has been performed since 1973 for relief of intractable pain. The target area is in the midbrain reticular formation (MRF) bordering the periaqueductal gray matter at the superior collicular level. The target of RMR is 13--16 mm posterior to the midpoint of the AC-PC line and 5--8 mm below the AC-PC line. The laterality of the target is measured from the center of the aqueduct, ranging 5 to 8 mm from the midline. The rationale for this procedure is based upon the previous findings that the brain stem reticular formation plays a more important role above the spinal cord level than the lateral spinothalamic tract in the central conduction of nociceptive impulse. In the present study, intraoperative single neuron recording was made with tungsten microelectrodes from the human midbrain tegmentum in response to peripheral pinprick stimulation. These nociceptive neurons were classified into three groups in regard to the unit latency from the peripheral pinprick stimulation.

[Effect of cardiocrome on EEG arousal response (author's transl)].

The experiment was made on effect of Cardiocrome (containing Cytochrome c, Co-Carboxylase and Flavin mononucleotide), Cytochrome c and Cytidine diphosphate (CDP) choline on the EEG arousal response induced by electrical stimulation of mesencephalic reticular formation in 68 unanesthetized immobilized cats. The arousal response was accelerated by intravenous injection of Cardiocrome, Cytochrome c and CDP-choline. The accelerating effect of Cardiocrome was more prominet than that of Cytochrome c. In conclusion, it can be drawn that Cardiocrome has an arousal effect on consciousness.

Mixed gonadal dysgenesis: endogenous hormonal effects in the endometrium and histogenesis of germinoma.

The clinicopathologic features of two patients with mixed gonadal dysgenesis are presented, with specific reference to the relationship between endogenous sex hormones and the endometrium and the development of neoplastic disease. One patient, whose immature gonad contained granulosa cells and theca cells, had elevated serum estrogen levels and an endometrium with frequent ciliated metaplasia and squamous metaplasia. Another patient had elevated serum testosterone levels and atrophic endometrium. Both had gonadal tumors, more specifically, germinomas, which contained many calcified nodules within the tumor. These findings suggest that these germinomas arose from a gonadoblastoma.
