Therapeutic efficacy of cytotoxic combination chemotherapy in ovarian "mature" teratoma.

Unintentionally, a mature ovarian teratoma was treated by cytotoxic chemotherapy from an early stage. In spite of the normal appearance of the left ovary at the time of the first operation on the right ovarian immature teratoma, a cystic tumor was found in the left ovary after ten courses of postoperative multi-drug (vincristine, actinomycin D and cyclophosphamide) chemotherapy. This neoplasm was enucleated from the left ovary and was confirmed histologically to be a fully mature teratoma at the time of the second look operation, although no recurrent or implanted lesions of immature tissues were revealed at that time. From these findings, it was supposed that the cytotoxic regimen did not affect the development of the mature teratoma. When considering the therapeutic significance of cytotoxic chemotherapy in the management of teratoma, it is important to realize the intractable nature of the mature elements as a factor resistant to cytotoxic methods.

Relationship between Habs serotypes and 2-amino sugar composition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Thirteen Habs-serotype strains could be classified into 11 groups depending on the characteristic patterns of 2-amino sugar composition; strains of serotypes 2, 5, and 7 had the same pattern, and each other serotype strain had its own distinctive pattern. In our classification, fucosamine and quinovosamine were of importance. We found that fucosamine from strain P14 (Habs serotype 1) was of the D configuration only, unlike DL-fucosamine from strain N10 (Habs serotype 11).

Arginine gene cluster of Serratia marcescens.

Biochemical and genetic studies on the arginine-requiring auxotrophs derived from a Serratia marcescens strain were carried out. The arg mutants were classified into seven biochemical groups based on their growth response to five precursors of arginine biosynthesis and enzyme deficiency. Reciprocal transduction tests among these arg mutants divided them into three linkage groups, and the fine mapping in each of the groups by two- or three-point crosses revealed the following arrangement of loci. (1) arg44-thy11-lys1; (2) met1-glt2-argE-(arg19-arg51)-arg120-argG-argH; (3) arg33-pyr4. Five of the seven biochemically distinct arg mutants belonged to the second linkage group, and they constituted an agr-gene cluster. A characteristic feature of the arg-gene cluster of S. marcescens is that it involves argG, which was previously reported only in the Proteus group of Enterobacteriaceae.

Oxidized and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate levels of plants hardened and unhardened against chilling injury.

Pea plants (Pisum sativum L. var. Alaska) subjected to low temperature (5 degrees ) in the light acquired resistance against chilling injury.Unhardened plants maintained high NADP and low NADPH levels during illumination at 25 degrees but hardened plants had low NADP and high NADPH levels in the light. When the unhardened plants were transferred to the dark room at 25 degrees , their NADPH levels decreased immediately. On the other hand, hardened plants maintained a high NADPH level for a few hours even in the dark.
