Cross-cultural perspectives on patient teaching.

Patient education for individuals of different cultures provides the professional nurse an opportunity to make a difference in the increasingly complex and changing problems in our bureaucratic society. Use of therapeutic relationships, indeed, can blend two worlds. Although we never can fully predict a patient's response to health teaching, we are likely to be much more effective if we understand and draw from the cultural context in which the patient is enmeshed.

Reconceptualizing the construct of health: integrating emic and etic perspectives.

Despite the importance of the health construct for nursing, there is not agreement on the nature of health. In this article, various conceptualizations of health are reviewed, the emic-etic distinction between the concepts of disease and illness is delineated, and a new model of health is presented. This model is illustrated with examples from the folk and scientific domains of one cultural group, Greek Americans. Finally, implications for using this model in nursing practice are discussed and research directions are suggested.

The dimensional structure of nursing interventions.

The derivation and description of the embedded structure undergirding nursing interventions are provided in this study. To determine the dimensions of nursing interventions, multidimensional scaling was used to analyze similarity ratings among classes of interventions. Kruskal's stress formula indicated that the embedded structure is composed of three dimensions. To describe the dimensions, each intervention class was rated on a 16-attribute pair semantic differential scale. Subsequent factor analysis and correlations of the factors with the dimensions resulted in the delineation of three dimensions: intensity of care, complexity of care, and focus of care.

Storytelling and violence against women.

Health professionals are frequently the first point of contact for many women who are abused and experience intimate male partner violence. Yet, practitioners often do not have the knowledge and/or feel prepared to address these issues with women. The authors propose the use of storytelling and literature as an educational strategy to challenge and change nurses' conceptualization and practices relative to abuse and violence against women.

Retention of a folk-healing practice (matiasma) among four generations of urban Greek immigrants.

This article reports a field investigation (N = 328) of a folk-healing practice (matiasma) among a population of urban Greek immigrants in Ohio. While orthodox Western health care is used by this community, the Greek population has also retained ethnomedical beliefs and practices that differ dramatically from those of scientific health care. This study delineates specific facets of matiasma, the configuration surrounding the evil eye. By tracing the retention of knowledge and use of this configuration over a four-generation period, this paper demonstrates the importance of generation depth as a variable in transcultural nursing research.
