The effect of an anticalculus dentifrice on supragingival calculus formation and gingival recession in Thai adults: a one-year study.

A one-year, double-blind clinical study was conducted on a population of male and female adults to determine the effect of the twice daily use of an anticalculus dentifrice on supragingival calculus formation and gingival recession, as compared to the use of a placebo dentifrice. The subjects were initially evaluated for calculus using the Volpe-Manhold scoring procedure and for gingival recession using the Gingival Recession Total (GRT) scoring procedure of Volpe, Triratana and Rustogi. All subjects received an oral prophylaxis and were assigned to the use of either a placebo dentifrice containing 0.243% sodium fluoride in a silica base or an anticalculus dentifrice containing 1.3% soluble pyrophosphate and 1.5% Gantrez copolymer in a 0.243% sodium fluoride/silica base. After six months, the subjects using the anticalculus dentifrice had 24.14% significantly less supragingival calculus than the placebo dentifrice subjects. After one year, the subjects using the anticalculus dentifrice had 40.76% significantly less supragingival calculus than the placebo dentifrice subjects. Also, after one year, the subjects using the anticalculus dentifrice had 27.75% significantly less gingival recession than the placebo dentifrice subjects.

Clinical comparison of anticalculus dentifrices: a three-month study of Thai children and teenagers.

A three-month, double-blind, parallel clinical study was conducted to evaluate the effects of three dentifrices on supragingival calculus formation. The products tested were a pyrophosphate/Gantrez copolymer, silica based dentifrice containing 0.243% sodium fluoride, a zinc citrate dentifrice containing 1.2% sodium monofluorophosphate in an alumina abrasive system, and a sodium fluoride/silica based placebo dentifrice. Using baseline Volpe-Manhold calculus scores, 150 Thai elementary school children in Chonburi Province were stratified into three balanced groups. All children then received a whole mouth oral prophylaxis and were randomly assigned one of the three test dentifrices. The children used only their assigned dentifrice for the next three months. At the end of three months, the study dentifrice containing pyrophosphate/copolymer reduced supragingival calculus deposits by 35% compared to the placebo dentifrice. This reduction was statistically significant at p less than .01. The pyrophosphate/copolymer dentifrice was also significantly better than the zinc citrate dentifrice at the p less than .01 level in reducing calculus scores. The zinc citrate dentifrice scores were not found to be significantly different from the placebo dentifrice scores on calculus reduction.

The effect of an anticalculus dentifrice on calculus formation and gingival recession in Thai children and teenagers: one-year study. Study #1. An anticalculus dentifrice containing 3.3% soluble pyrophosphate and 1.0% of a copolymer.

A one-year, double-blind clinical study was conducted on a population of Thai children and teenagers to determine the effect of the twice daily use of an anticalculus dentifrice on supragingival calculus formation and gingival recession, as compared to the use of a placebo dentifrice and the continuation of customary oral hygiene procedures. The subjects were initially evaluated for calculus using the Volpe-Manhold procedure and for gingival recession using the GRT procedure of Volpe, Triratana, and Rustogi. All subjects received an oral prophylaxis and were assigned to the use of 1) a placebo dentifrice containing 0.243% sodium fluoride in a silica base, 2) an anticalculus dentifrice containing 3.3% soluble pyrophosphate and 1.0% Gantrez copolymer--in a 0.243% sodium fluoride/silica base, or 3) continuation of customary oral hygiene procedures. After one year, the subjects using the anticalculus dentifrice had 37.01% less supragingival calculus and 25.09% less gingival recession than the subjects using the placebo dentifrice. Additionally, after one year, the subjects using the anticalculus dentifrice had 34.86% less supragingival calculus and 29.95% less gingival recession than the subjects who continued their customary oral hygiene procedures. All reductions were statistically significant at the 95% or greater level of confidence.

All subjects received an oral prophylaxis and were assigned to the use of the following: (1) a placebo dentifrice containing 0.243% sodium fluoride in a silica base, (2) an anticalculus dentifrice containing 1.3% soluble pyrophosphate and 1.5% Gantrez copolymer in a 0.243% sodium fluoride/silica base, or (3) continuation of customary oral hygiene procedures. After six months, the subjects using the anticalculus dentifrice had 35.93% less supragingival calculus than the placebo dentifrice subjects, and 52.74% less supragingival calculus than the subjects who continued their regular/customary oral hygiene procedures. After one year, the subjects using the anticalculus dentifrice had 39.76% less supragingival calculus and 18.33% less gingival recession than the subjects using the placebo dentifrice. Also, after one year, the subjects using the anticalculus dentifrice had 57.86% less supragingival calculus and 16.55% less gingival recession than the subjects who continued their customary oral hygiene procedures. All reductions were statistically significant at the 99% level of confidence.

Effect of Eupatorium odoratum on blood coagulation.

The purified compound, 4', 5, 6, 7-tetramethoxyflavone, is an active ingredient isolated from Eupatorium odoratum, a Thai indigenous plant that has long been used to stop bleeding. This compound was studied in vitro for the effect on blood clotting factor activities. It was found that the compound enhanced blood coagulation, the observed APTT being shorter than that observed in the control. The result suggested that the compound accelerated clotting time through the intrinsic pathway of the coagulation which may involve the reaction of factor XII, factor XI, factor IX or factor VIII.

Development of a system to assess visible and hidden gingival recession.

The accurate assessment of gingival recession is important because of soft tissue deterioration and/or the state of soft tissue health. While recession of the gingival margin is a common and important symptom of periodontal disease, it also refers to the location of the gingiva and not to its condition. Recession can occur at all tooth surfaces. This paper describes a new system designed to measure two parameters of gingival recession. One parameter of recession is visible above the gumline to an observer, while another parameter is hidden by the gingiva itself. Visible recession is the shift of the marginal gingiva to a position apical to the cemento-enamel junction. Hidden recession is obscured by gingiva and can be assessed by measuring from the free gingival margin to the level of epithelial attachment. The system developed here differs from the current indices commonly used for gingival recession, since it combines both the visual portion with the hidden portion of recession for a total score. The assessment method is similar to the calculus scoring procedure of Volpe and Manhold and is called the Gingival Recession Total (GRT) scoring system.

Gingival Recession

The association between supragingival [correction of subgingival] calculus deposits and the extent of gingival recession in a sample of Thai children and teenagers.

A survey was performed on a sample of children and teenagers in Thailand. The sample consisted of 260 subjects ages 10-17 years. Assessments of the prevalence and amount of supragingival calculus (Volpe-Manhold) on the facial and lingual surfaces of the six mandibular anterior teeth were recorded. All subjects then received a thorough whole mouth prophylaxis. Two weeks later they were reexamined for gingival recession using the Gingival Recession Total (GRT) scoring system on the same six mandibular anterior teeth. For the analysis, the calculus scores were used to categorize the subjects as having slight, medium, or heavy calculus. Using the GRT scores, the same subjects were then categorized as having mild, moderate or extensive gingival recession. The categories of both calculus level and gingival recession level were statistically assessed using the Chi-square distribution and a significant difference was found indicating that the amount of calculus was related to total gingival recession. Subjects with slight calculus had more mild recession whereas medium or heavy calculus formers had more moderate or extensive total gingival recession scores.

[Calculus accumulation on tooth surface in children].

The project was designed to study the accumulation of calculus on the tooth surface in school children. One hundred and twenty two 10-15 years of age school children in both sexes were participated in the study. They were evaluated by a dentist for the presence and quantity of calculus deposits on the labial and lingual surfaces of the lower six anterior teeth using Volpe-Manhold calculus scoring method. The subjects were divided into three groups according to their calculus scores as "slight" (10-25 mm.) "moderate" (26-40 mm.) and "heavy" (greater than 40 mm.). Then all subjects received a complete oral prophylaxis, including the removal of all subgingival and supragingival deposits. At six months and twelve months after oral prophylaxis all subjects were evaluated for the calculus deposition by the same dentist. The results revealed that redeposit of calculus at six and twelve months of the three groups were statistically different (p less than 0.05). The "slight" calculus group had the calculus deposit, after oral prophylaxis, less than the "moderate" and the "heavy" group. The "heavy" group had the calculus deposit much more than the "moderate" group.

[Eruption of permanent teeth in malnutrition children].

The aim of this research was to study the eruption time of permanent teeth in malnutritional children of primary school Si Sa Ket province. The total sample size was 337, aged between 6-16 years. The results from the study showed that there were significantly delay in time of eruption of permanent teeth in malnutrition group when compared to the normal group of other study. The pattern of permanent dentition in malnutrition group coincided with those normal group of other study. There was high correlation between age and height, weight and eruption time of permanent teeth. Age estimation can be done through Regression equation based on eruption time of permanent teeth scores.

[Dental care of children with hemophilia].

Hemophilia, the most common of the inherited bleeding disorder, is the result of a deficiency of clotting factor. Its characteristic is easy to bleed, prolong bleeding, and difficult to stop bleeding. In order to give dental treatment to the patient with this disease, consultation with the patient's physician is necessary. In addition, dentist should know the prevention and control of hemorrhage after treatment.

The effect of a dentifrice containing soluble pyrophosphate and a copolymer on calculus deposit: a six-month clinical study.

A six-month, double blind, cross over clinical study was conducted to compare the effect of a commercially available anticalculus dentifrice and a placebo dentifrice on supragingival calculus deposits. Fifty adult subjects who entered the study were given an oral prophylaxis and were assigned to use either pyrophosphate/copolymer toothpaste or a placebo toothpaste for a period of three months. They were then scored for calculus deposits using the Volpe-Manhold method, received a second oral prophylaxis and used the alternate dentifrice for a second three month period of time. The subjects were again scored for calculus deposits and the study was completed. The results indicated that pyrophosphate/copolymer toothpaste reduced supragingival calculus formation by 37.07%, as compared to the placebo dentifrice. This reduction was significant at the 99% level of confidence.

[Dentinal dysplasia type I].

Dentinal dysplasia is one of the rarest hereditary disturbances of dentin formation characterized by the teeth present with short blunt roots, considerably reduced or obliterated pulp spaces, periapical abscess or cysts without an obvious causative factor, and spontaneous exfoliated. These features were observed on a patient referred for prosthodontic assessment, and an investigation of other members of the family revealed that the father and two siblings were also affected. The report described the clinical, radiographic, histologic and scanning electron microscopic features and discussed the features which separated from dentinogenesis imperfecta.
