A reversibly antigen-responsive hydrogel.

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels that undergo abrupt changes in volume in response to external stimuli such as pH, temperature and solvent composition have potential applications in biomedicine and the creation of 'intelligent' materials systems, for example as media for drug delivery, separation processes and protein immobilization. Hydrogels have been reported that respond to pH, temperature, electric fields and saccharides. For some biomedical applications it would be very useful to have a material whose swelling response was dictated by a specific protein. Here we report such a material, which swells reversibly in a buffer solution in response to a specific antigen. The hydrogel was prepared by grafting the antigen and corresponding antibody to the polymer network, so that binding between the two introduces crosslinks in the network. Competitive binding of the free antigen triggers a change in gel volume owing to breaking of these non-covalent crosslinks. In addition, we show that the hydrogel displays shape-memory behaviour, and that stepwise changes in antigen concentration can induce pulsatile permeation of a protein through the network.

[Cavernous lymphangioma of mediastinum--a case report].

A 2-year-old girl with mediastinal cavernous lymphangioma was successfully treated in 1991. She had a cough and an abnormal shadow in the right mediastinum was shown on her chest X-ray. The tumor, which spread from the right upper mediastinum to the pre-aorta, was demonstrated on CT and MRI. On August 8, 1991, the operation was performed through the right thoracotomy. The tumor was located in the right-upper and middle mediastinum and involved N. phrenics and vagus, but didn't invade and was completely resected. It was 4.2 x 3.4 x 3.2 cm in size and the cut surface of the tumor had an appearance consisting of the soft solid tissue, but containing partial cystic spaces. Histological diagnosis was cavernous lymphangioma. The mediastinal cavernous lymphangioma has been reported in only 6 cases in the Japanese medical literature.

Retroperitoneal bleeding due to a ruptured aneurysm of the middle colic artery.

In a 51-year-old man the middle colic artery ruptured. The patient had abdominal pain for several days, and then suddenly, a considerable intraperitoneal bleeding occurred. The aneurysm was extirpated and in the postoperative angiogram, numerous aneurysms were detected in the colic artery. Splanchnic artery aneurysm mainly occurs in renal artery, splenic artery and hepatic artery, but rarely in the mesenteric artery. The pathogenesis of mesenteric artery aneurysms is usually mycotic false aneurysm from prior aortic endoarteritis. In the present case, the etiology of the aneurysm was not confirmed.
