[Dynamics of proliferation and apoptosis in the human bulbourethral glands in the process of aging].

The dynamics of the processes of proliferation and apoptosis in the epithelium of the bulbourethral glands in men aged 17-90 years was studied using monoclonal antibodies against PCNA and p53. Higher levels of cell reproduction and cell death were noted in the glandular duct epithelium as compared to those in secretory portions. Age-related increase in apoptosis which correlated with the activation of the glandular cell proliferation was shown. In old men, apoptosis in the bulbourethral glands was accompanied by the tendency to reduced cell proliferation. The correlation between the processes of cell reproduction and cell death in the epithelium of the bulbourethral glands, as well as their dependence on blood androgen levels, are discussed.

[Endocrinocytes of the human bulbourethral glands].

Structure, topography and numbers of endocrinocytes in bulbourethral glands of mature men were studied using immunohistochemical demonstration of chromogranin A. Chromogranin-positive cells were found to be predominantly localized in the epithelium of excretory ducts, while they were sparse in the terminal secretory portions. Endocrinocytes in bulbourethral glands were shown to possess argyrophobic properties and to be stained with antibodies against common cytokeratin. The possibility of epithelial histogenesis of bulbourethral gland endocrinocytes is discussed.

[Fertility alpha-2-microglobulin expression in the human bulbourethral glands].

Fertility alpha-2-microglobulin (FAMG) was demonstrated in the human bulbourethral glands by the method of indirect immunoperoxidase staining using monoclonal antibodies against FAMG. The product of the immunohistochemical reaction was primary found in the duct cells. Weak immunopositive reaction was observed in single epitheliocytes of the secretory units. FAMG-positive granularity was typically found in the supranuclear cytoplasmic zone, that corresponds to the localization of secretory granules both in the glandulocytes and in the duct cells. These results suggest, that the bulbourethral glands are probably the additional producers of human seminal plasma FAMG.

[Endocrine cells of the duodenal glands in various representatives of Primates].

The duodenum of four species of monkeys, belonging to the genera Macaca and Papio, has been investigated. In order to reveal argyrophil and argentaffin Ec-cells, Grimelius and Masson-Hamperl methods have been used, respectively. In all the species studied in the terminal parts and in the ducts of the duodenal glands presence of endocrine cells is noted; their amount, however, is considerably less than in crypts. Open and close types of endocrine cells++ have been revealed in the glands. A part of the endocrine cells population is argentaffin Ec-cells (about 40% in Papio and 80% in Macaca). This demonstrates participation of serotonin they produce in regulation of the duodenal glands functional activity. Dependence between taxonomic position of the species and degree of endocrine cells++ development in the duodenal glands has been followed. In particular, in representatives of Macaca amount of argyrophil and argentaffin in the glands is greater than in Papio. Possible reasons of the differences are discussed. Comparing the results on investigation of the glands in the primates with those previously obtained for representatives of Carnivora, a suggestion is made concerning some general principles in organization of the proper endocrinic apparatus of the mammalian duodenal glands.

[Quantitative characteristics of the endocrine cells of the duodenal glands of Carnivora].

In the duodenal glands of the Carnivora investigated endocrine elements have been revealed, a part of them is presented as serotonin-producing EC-cells. Endocrine cells are situated in terminal parts and in glandular ducts, among them elements of open and close types are distinguished. Distribution of these cells in the glandular lobules is subjected to the distal gradient regularity, specific for the gastrointestinal tract mucosal membrane. Amount of endocrinocytes in the glands is much less than in the gut crypts. There is no correlation between distribution of the endocrine cells in the glands and in the crypts. The results of unifactor analysis of variance demonstrate a slight effect of the taxonomic position of the species on the number of endocrine cells in the duodenal glands. The proper endocrine apparatus of the duodenal glands is supposed to produce a local regulatory influence on the secretory activity of exogenic glandulocytes, as well as ensure humoral connections of the duodenal glands with other parts of the gastrointestinal tract.

[Effect of a diet with excess cellulose on the morphofunctional status of the duodenal glands in the rat].

The developmental degree of the duodenal glands and their functional activity have been studied in rats given food with an increased contents of cellulose. In 3 months in the duodenum of the test animals extent of the glandular field increases significantly in comparison to the intact animals. This increase is connected with new formation of the gland terminal parts from epithelium of the intestinal crypts in the more caudal parts of the gut. Simultaneously, functional activity of the glandular cells increases; this is evident from elevated concentration of RNA in nucleoli, share of the nucleoli with predominant contents of euchromatin, and also from decreased concentration of PAS-positive secretion in the terminal parts. These differences can be connected with changes in pH of the stomach contents towards acidic value, when excess of cellulose is taken.

[Development of the duodenal glands in rats on a high cellulose diet].

Wistar weaned rats were kept on cellulose-rich diet for 3 months. They revealed the duodenal gland area of increased length, as compared to the control group kept on standard pellets. Glandular-duodenal index, that is a relative indication of gland development, also rose. Cellulose-fed rats showed a lower pH of the stomach contents. The correlation between pH and gland development has been established. Possible reasons for a more intensive gland enlargement in herbivorous animals are being discussed.

[Certain barrier-forming structures of the testis].

Tunica of the twisted spermatic canal is an important component of the hemato-testicular barrier ensuering a selected penetration of some substances (metabolites, hormones) from the blood bed into the "spermatogenic epithelium" and vice versa. The structure of this tunica in the male mice is not identical along the whole length of the twisted spermatic canals. The differences are connected with both number of layers, cellular and acellular, and with their distinction and, that is more essential, with differences in structure and function of myoid cells--the most important component of the peritubular tissue. The differences mentioned above demonstrate various degree of distinction of the hemato-testicular barrier along the course of the twisted spermatic canals of the mouse.

[Changes in the duodenal glands with a modification of the diet (a histochemical study using lectins)].

A set of lectins with different carbohydrate specificities were used for a histochemical analysis of the duodenal glands of rats which had different food rations during 3 months. Lectin receptors in glandulocytes of the duodenum had different spectra under different food regimens: protein diets of the animals correlated with the accumulation of glycopolymers in the glandular epithelium with the terminal residues of N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, L-fucose, higher content of cellulose in food was followed by reduction of fucosoglycans in combination with accumulation of mannose-containing glycopolymers. The regular specific features found point to quantitative and qualitative changes to the formed secretion of the duodenal glands under the influence of changing conditions of nutrition.
