Evolutionary physiology: history, principles.

1) The history of comparative and evolutionary physiology since the early XIX century is given; 2) The methods of evolutionary physiology are described; 3) Principles of the evolution of function are discussed at every level of physiological organization (cellular, functional units of the organ, the organ itself, functional systems) as they apply to the kidney and to the regulation of salt and water balance; and 4) General questions of evolutionary physiology covering physico-chemical factors in evolution of functions, the development of the integrity of an organism, the origin of physiological adaptation, the development of interconnection of physiological systems are discussed.

Brain functional asymmetry and neural organization of linguistic competence.

Neural organization of linguistic competence in the light of brain functional asymmetry was studied in patients after unilateral electroconvulsive therapy. We have gathered further evidence that the cerebral hemispheres play essentially different roles: the right hemisphere operates largely with extralinguistic reality and is responsible for the ideational (intentional) level, initiating the process of speech production. It relates sign to its referent; its syntax is the word order. The left hemisphere interrelates signs; it refines and ultimately completes the process of speech production. The right hemispheric linguistic competence demonstrates the most universal linguistic abilities, whereas left hemispheric competence probably reveals the features of national languages.

Bilingualism and brain functional asymmetry.

The task of the neural organization of the native language, acquired by a direct method and of another language, studied at school, performed correspondingly by the left and the right hemispheres, was studied in the bilingual patient after unilateral electroconvulsive therapy used in psychiatry. It was established that in such a bilingual type the right hemisphere is concerned with the formation of deep semantic structures of the native language while the left hemisphere is responsible for the formation of second language deep structures and of surface structures of both languages. The effect of language learning method on cerebral organization of bilingualism is postulated.
