Chronic alcohol intoxication of mice CBA and C57BL/6 strains decreased distinctly the content of T lymphocytes in peripheric blood and inhibited the immune response to sheep erythrocytes. Vitamin E, administered into mice at a dose of 5 IU and into guinea pigs--of 50 IU within 3 days, restored completely the immunity status of these animals. Besides, vitamin E decreased ethanol consumption in mice kept under conditions of alternative choice of water-ethanol within one week after its injection.
The examination of patients with bronchial asthma has established that vitamin E supplemented to their multimodality therapy produces an immunological effect. The decreased functional activity of T lymphocytes increases and their levels elevate in their peripheral blood. There was also an increase in the blood levels of B cells, by elevating the count of mature B lymphocytes and reducing that of immature B cells. Vitamin E enhances the phagocytic activity of peripheral granulocytes whereas the serum activity of lysozyme and complement declines.
CBA mice were subjected to forced alcoholization. After ethanol withdrawal, adoptive transfer of splenocytes, sera, and macrophages was made in intact recipient mice. Splenocytic transfer enhanced alcohol consumption when they had an option to have water or 15% ethanol solution during 7 days. Serum transfer increased ethanol consumption during 24 hours. Macrophageal transfer failed to affect its consumption.
Studies have been made on.morpho-functional changes in the optic nerve and midbrain tectum after enucleation of the tortoise T. horsfieldi. It was found that intensive degeneration of terminals which follows "dark" type (3--31/2 months after enucleation) corresponds to degeneration of myelinated fibers. Terminals degenerating accordingly to "light" type (2--3 months) presumably belong to unmyelinated fibers, which degenerate at this period in the nerve. Terminals which follow "vesicular" degeneration, survive up to 6--61/2 months, probably due to survival of some unmyelinated fibers in the nerve. During degeneration of the optic fibers, corresponding changes in amplitude-temporal parameters of the evoked potentials in the midbrain tectum were observed during electrical stimulation of the optic nerve. These changes include the increase of the interval between the stimulus and the peak of both components, as well as the decrease of the amplitude of the responses. These changes were originally observed 11/2--2 months after enucleation, becoming more evident at later stages; 6--61/2 months after enucleation, both components of the evoked potential disappeared almost simultaneously.
As shown in experiments on mice C57B1/6, systemic intraperitoneal injection of serotonin antibodies in a dose 25 mg/kg or their introduction into cell culture in a dose 10(-7)M attenuates proliferative response of lymphocytes on PWM-induced stimulation, while functional activity of macrophages is stimulated. Antibodies to dopamine neither in systemic nor in cell culture introduction cause noticeable changes in lymphocytes proliferative response to their PWM and ConA mitogen stimulation. Phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages was also unchanged.
