[Urease test of the gastric content deposits for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection in the gastric mucosa].

A rapid urease test was applied to the examination of the deposit of gastric juice for diagnosing H. pylori in the gastric mucosa. Two hundred and twenty patients blindly randomized were examined in a case control study. The standard rapid urease test kit Jatrox-H.p.-Test (Rohm Pharma, Germany) was used to determine urease activity in the deposit of gastric juice and duodenal [n = 110 (Group 1)] and gastroduodenal [n = 110 (Group 2)] mucosae. Giemsa staining was employed as a comparison method to examine H. pylori infection in the gastric and duodenal mucosae. The availability of regions of duodenal metaplasia was confirmed by periodic acid-Schiff and alcian blue (Serva) staining tests (pH 1.0 and 2.5, respectively). The results of evaluation of the efficiency of the rapid urease test of gastric juice deposit and gastric and duodenal mucosae in Groups 1 and 2 were as follows: sensitivity (SE) (0.97, 0.99, 0,96), specificity (SP) (0.97, 0.97, 0.99), prevalence (0.64, 0.67, 0.24), test accuracy (TA) (0.96, 0.98, 0.98), negative (0.95, 0.97, 0.99) and positive (0.98, 0.99, 0.96) predictive values; positive (38.8, 33.0, 96.0) and negative (0.03, 0.01, 0.04) likelihood ratios. It is expedient to employ the rapid urease test for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection in the stomach (Se 96-99%, Sp 97%, TA 97-98%). When the test of gastric juice deposit and gastric biopsy is positive, the probability of gastric H. pylori availability is 98-99%. When the test is negative (the probability of H. pylori absence is 95-97%), duodenal biopsy is made. When the test of duodenal biopsy is positive, the probability of H. pylori availability is 96%. When it is negative, the probability of H. pylori absence is 99%. An algorithm of use of the rapid urease test to diagnose H. pylori in different intestinal parts (stomach, duodenum) has been developed.

[Diagnostic significance of calcitonin analysis in children with rickets and rickets-like diseases administered calcium test].

The secretory activity of C-cells of the thyroid was investigated in 25 children with rickets and rickets-like diseases. There were 13 children with grades II and III rickets, 6 with vitamin D-dependent rickets, and 6 with Debre-de Toni-Fanconi disease. Five normal children constituted a control group. The basal concentration of calcitonin did not differ from the control parameter in all patients' groups. An increased release of the hormone to the blood was noticed in response to calcium stimulation. The rise of blood calcitonin was determined by the disease pattern, which made it possible to use the test with a one-minute intravenous calcium injection for differential diagnosis purposes. The maximal changes were discovered in children suffering from vitamin D-dependent rickets.

[Effect of the growth phase and nutrient medium on the survival of lyophilized cells of Pseudomonas denitrificans].

The influence of the growth phase and cultivation condition of Pseudomonas denitrificans on the survival of the culture after lyophilization was examined. The culture removed for drying in the stationary phase showed the highest resistance to lyophilization. The cells dried at the beginning of exponential phase displayed enhanced sensitivity to lyophilization. Addition to the cultivation medium (meat-peptone broth) of Tween-80 (0.25%) caused an increase of proteins, lipids and polysaccharides in cells and an enhancement of their telerance to lyophilization.

[Comparative assessment of the cancer risk of the products of smoking and ambient air pollution].

Danger from aerogenic dose carcinogens entering the body with smoking products is shown to be essentially greater than that from aerogenic loading in industrial centers. The individual and population risks for smoking-induced cancer and the economic damage to the country, associated with the treatment of a large number of patients are given. To make a complete assessment of the carcinogenic risk of tobacco smoking, it is necessary to estimate all its carcinogenic constituents, their precursors, and possible transformation products at elevated temperatures.

[Effect of Fe3+ ions on Thiobacillus ferrooxidans oxidation of ferrous oxide at various temperatures].

The inhibition of the rate of ferrous iron oxidation by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with ferric ions was shown to depend on their concentration, the temperature of the medium, and the phase of the cultural growth. Ferrous iron oxidation was inhibited with ferric ions both at low (below 1.0 g/l) and high (ca. 10 g/l) concentrations, the process being temperature dependent: the rate of inhibition decreased with a fall of the temperature. The bacterium was most sensitive to unfavourable Fe3+ concentrations at 8-26 degrees C during the lag phase; Fe2+ oxidation was inhibited during the exponential phase of growth only at 26 degrees C. The Ki for Fe3+ at 27, 10 and 5 degrees C were 3.09-3.39, 11.4-22.8 and 46.0 g/l Fe3+, respectively. Therefore, the affinity of the enzyme for the inhibitor Fe3+ decreases with a fall of the temperature.
