[The esophageal transport function in patients with nodular goiter and in patients operated on for thyroid cancer].

A study was made of changes of esophageal transport function in 10 patients with thyroid adenoma and in 27 patients after surgical and radiotherapeutic management for thyroid cancer. The results were compared with those of a control group. Significant data on changes on esophageal transport function in patients with thyroid adenoma were unnoticed. Esophageal dysfunction after operation and radioactive iodine therapy for cancer was detected in 55%. Dysfunction was thought to be caused by dysphagia which showed direct correlation with the severity of hypothyroidism.

[The concentration of carcinoembryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen Ca-19-9 in the blood serum in cancerous diseases of the gastrointestinal tract].

The results of comparative investigation of 266 cancer patients, 44 patients with benign G. I. tract diseases and 66 healthy subjects using 2 tumor markers (CEA and Ca-19-9) showed the diagnostic value of both methods, not exceeding 38-42%. The most informative were the data on patients with pancreatic and colorectal cancers as well as in patients with detected metastases. Significant differences in the sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic informative value between the two markers were undetectable.

[A 10-year experience with combined diagnosis of pancreatic diseases].

Optimum multimodality examination of the pancreas includes sonographic, radioimmunological, scintigraphic and angiographic studies. Sonography is a method of choice to study anatomotopographic features of the pancreas. The radioimmunoassay is intended both for the mass screening of patients with hepatogastro-duodenal diseases and for the differential diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis by the nature and type of disease. The use of pancreatoscintigraphy should be restricted in view of considerable exposure of patients. Angiography and angioscanning should be performed strictly according to indications with suspicion for a pancreatic tumor.

[Radioisotopic diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum in children].

The serial scintiphotography following intravenous injection of Tc99m-ertechnetate was used for examination of 50 children aged from 11 months to 14 years. The method is founded on the Tc99m-pertechnetate property of selective accumulation in the gastric mucous membrane and in Meckel's diverticulum when the latter contains the ectopic gastric mucous membrane. The inflamed diverticulum can accumulate the radionuclide, as well. Meckel's diverticulum was suspected in 7 children during examination; in 6 of them Meckel's diverticulum was found peroperatively, and in one case there was enterocyst of the ileum.
