[The cerebral control of afferent somatosensory projections].

Cortical and dorsal column nuclei somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) induced by electrical stimulation of the median nerve were recorded and analysed in 16 healthy volunteers practising transcendental meditation (TM) for two years. The records were performed before and during TM. The SEP changes during TM consisted of an increase in early SEP components amplitude. There were no changes in early SEP components peak latencies during TM.

[Afferent connections of the nuclei of dorsal columns of spinal cord].

The authors studied structural origins of the conduction of the dorsal chord afferent projections to contralateral dorsal column nucleus in cats, which were discovered after foreleg electrical stimulation by the evoked responses method. This evoked responses remain after unilateral section of the medial lemniscus. It was shown the existence of not classical connections which cross to another side at the level of spinal cord and caudal division of brain stem. The discovery fibres contact with other projection systems and form all known types of interneuronal contacts.

[Hygienic assessment of working conditions for schoolchildren at video terminals during their academic studies].

Proceeding from the studies on the conditions of schoolchildren's work with video terminals during school lessons there was developed a complex of hygienic measures aimed at reduction of impact of factors specified by the work with video terminals and by anthropogenic pollution. Requirements to design of classrooms equipped by video terminals were listed and optimal and permissible ergonomic characteristics of the workplace established along with air temperature and humidity.

[Extra-lemniscal afferent projections of dorsal spinal cord nuclei to the ventrobasal nuclear complex structure in the contralateral optic thalamus].

It has been found that section of half the midbrain tegmentum in cats failed to prevent the afferent somatosensory projections from the foreleg to the ventrobasal nuclear complex of the contralateral thalamus. Specific evoked responses to the stimulation of the contralateral foreleg were recorded in this structure. These specific EP have the same latency as "lemniscal responses" (4-5 ms) and diminish the amplitude and duration of both components of the responses. Simultaneously, we have observed terminal axonal degeneration into the ventrobasal nuclear complex of the thalamus 5-7 days after the section of the contralateral midbrain tegmentum, using the electron microscopy method. All the results obtained indicate that the dorsal column nuclei have extra-lemniscal afferent connections with ventrolateral nuclear complex of the contralateral thalamus. These connections ascend in the back parts of the brainstem ipsilaterally to the corresponding pair of the dorsal column nuclei and rostrally to the midbrain on the contralateral side.

[Disability dynamics and specialized employment of osteoarthrosis deformans patients].

According to the data obtained during expert medical evaluation of the working capacity a considerable proportion among the examined accounts for patients with deforming osteoarthrosis (DOA), both primary and secondary. Despite the disease intensity and gravity of complications because of the development of compensatory processes most patients preserve work fitness for a long enough period of time, provided they are given proper work. To prevent the disease progress and grave disability, it is advisable that physicians engaged in the commissions for expert medical evaluation of the working capacity should prolong the time of temporary disability for more than 4 months, namely for the period of the development of compensation, provided the clinical and work fitness prognosis is favourable. Rehabilitation is also promoted by the use of concrete recommendations as to the specialized employment.

[Structural and functional organization of the dorsal column nuclei after unilateral exclusion of the medial lemniscus].

The authors studied ultrastructural changes in neurons and alterations in evoked electrical responses after stimulation of the forelegs in the nuclei gracilis and cuneatus one year after unilateral section of the medial lemniscus in cats. It was shown that intact projectional elements of the nuclei gracilis and cuneatus had the normal cytological appearance and functional activity of their synaptical organization in spite of the cytoarchitectonic asymmetry. After disruption of the medial lemniscus the symmetrical nuclei of the dorsal columns did not exhibit any asymmetry in the distribution of evoked responses after stimulation of the forelegs.

[Dilatation (congestive) cardiomyopathy: clinical aspects, diagnosis and treatment].

Clinical and electrocardiographic manifestations of congestive cardiomyopathy are considered on the basis of observations of 25 patients with this pathology of the myocardium. No clinico-electrocardiographic signs specific for this disease were found. Most characteristic were cardiomegaly, congestive cardiac failure and various disturbances of rhythm and conductivity. Thromboembolic complications in the lung and kidney vessels are frequently found. Cardiac glycosides, saluretics and vasodilators were employed in the treatment of patients with congestive cardiomyopathy but the prognosis was usually poor.

[Structural-functional connections of the lemniscus system with the caudate nucleus in the cat].

Afferent projections were studied of nuclei of the spinal cord dorsal columns to the caudate nuclei. Evoked potentials (EPs) were recorded in the caudate nuclei and the nuclei of dorsal columns of the spinal cord to stimulation of the forelimb against the background and after unilateral elimination of the medial lemniscus. After the section, the EPs in the recorded nuclei sharply intensified in response to stimulation of the forelimb, ipsilateral to the section. Degenerative changes were also shown by electron microscopy in axonal terminals in the caudate nuclei at the operated side. Conclusion is drawn that the caudate nuclei receive direct connections from the contralateral nuclei of the spinal cord dorsal columns, which probably, conduct mainly kinesthetic afferent influences.
