Family living arrangement and social adjustment among three ethnic groups of elderly Indochinese refugees.

This study examines family living arrangement and social adjustment in an area probability sample of 258 elderly Indochinese refugees fifty-five years or older in the United States. Data were collected in 1982 from five locations representing the diversity of the Indochinese refugee communities in the United States. Multiple regression analysis was used. The findings reveal that elderly refugees who lived within the nuclear or extended family had a better sense of social adjustment than those living outside the family context. Elderly refugees who lived in overcrowded households and in households that had children under the age of sixteen experienced a poorer sense of adjustment. Ethnicity had no significant relationship with social adjustment. Finally, among six control variables, age had a significant relationship that indicates that older refugees had a poorer sense of adjustment than their younger counterparts.

Language acculturation among older Vietnamese refugee adults.

The purpose of this study was to examine the English language acculturation among older Vietnamese refugees (aged 40 and over) in a nationwide sample. The findings reveal that age, sex, education in Vietnam, health, and length of residence in the U.S. had some significant relationships with language acculturation. In particular, older Vietnamese people had more problems with language acculturation than their younger counterparts, and Vietnamese women had more language acculturation problems than men.

Differences in the structure of Life Satisfaction Index in three generations of Mexican Americans.

This study examines differences in the structure of seven Life Satisfaction Index (LSI) items across three generations of Mexican Americans. Viewing the covariance structure of the items as a function of several parameter matrices, we analyzed factorial invariance by testing hypotheses involving equivalence constraints on one or more parameter matrices. Analysis of covariance structures, or LISREL, was used to assess the factorial invariance. Differences in the factorial structure of the LSI were found between the older generation and the other two generations (i.e., the middle-age and younger generations). These differences persisted even when generational differences in education, income, and acculturation were taken into account. Further analyses revealed that generational differences were contained in only one (i.e., congruence) of the three first- comparisons in the other two dimensions (i.e., zest and mood tone) are appropriate.

Predicting problem drinking in college students: gender differences and the CAGE questionnaire.

Adolescents and young adults are among the highest users of alcohol and other drugs in the United States. One of the tools most commonly employed in screening for problem drinking and alcohol dependence is the CAGE questionnaire. Research has indicated, however, that not only may the CAGE be a poor detection device for identifying youthful substance abuse, but it may particularly lack strength in the detection of alcohol abuse by young women. The current study examined the predictive power of the CAGE relative to other common assessment indicators of youthful substance abuse in a sample of college students. It focused on the relative predictive power of the CAGE in detecting a high level of drinking-related problems. In addition, the interaction of gender and a positive CAGE score was included in the logistic regression analysis to test the hypothesis that the CAGE is predictive for men but not for women. Results suggest that the CAGE is a relatively weak predictor of alcohol-related problems in this sample of college students, and it lacks predictive power for detecting, problems in college women. Issues concerning substance-abuse assessment in young people are discussed, with special consideration given to gender differences.
