Neural and vascular tissue reaction of cyanoacrylate adhesives: a further report.

The effect of a new tissue adhesive, carbohexoxymethyl 2-cyanoacrylate monomer (Ethicon CHC), was evaluated in six cats divided into two groups. With the cats under barbiturate anesthesia. Ethicon CHC was applied to the left cruciate cortex and the left femoral neurovascular bundle. Normal saline was applied to the right side for control. The first group (n = 4) and the second group (n = 2) were killed 4 and 7 days, respectively, after application of the adhesive. Neuropathological examination revealed meningeal astrocytosis, vascular wall degeneration, hemorrhage, and inflammatory reaction in both groups. This adhesive does not display the ideal property of inertness, which would permit its safe use. Focal tissue reactions caused by the adhesives in sensitive areas of the cortex can result in significant neurological deficit.

Intramedullary cervical spinal cord abscess. Case report.

A case of spontaneous intramedullary cervical spinal cord abscess is presented. The clinical and laboratory findings in cases of spinal cord abscess vary. Prompt diagnosis and drainage are stressed as critical factors in effectively managing the disease.

A survey of infections in stereotactic surgery.

In 365 consecutive intracranial stereotactic procedures over a 6-year period, there were three postoperative infections; 1 case of increased neurological deficit and 1 of fatality. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common organism involved; however, multiple organisms were seen in 2 cases. Multiplicity of organisms necessitated the use of a broad spectrum of antibiotics in the preoperative and postoperative periods. The method described has permitted an infection rate which compares favorably to other reports in the literature. Perioperative antibiotics, antibiotic-containing irrigation solutions, and careful attention to sterile techniques seem to be instrumental in maintaining a low infection rate in our study. Since the new spheroid design has been used, there have been no infections.
