[Diagnosis of primary hypercholesteremia--a classification of genetic factors as causes for myocardial infarct].

Cultvated lymphocytes of patients with myocardial infarction with a primary hypercholesterolaemia as well as of unconspicuous control persons take up LDL-cholesterol labelled by 125iodine. Here is evident that lymphocytes of patients with a primary hypercholesterolaemia may incorporate significantly less LDL-cholesterol than healthy control persons. Supplementing the serum lipid determinations and the lipid electrophoresis the described radiochemical investigations at the model of lymphocytes make possible a biochemically exact diagnosis of the primary hypercholesterolaemia and thus an evident genetic analysis of the patients with infarctions.

[Pathophysiology and diagnosis of acute intermittent porphyria].

Apart from the determination of preporphyrin and porphyrin in the urine recently enzymatic methods entered the diagnostics of the acute intermittent porphyria. Of particular importance is the decrease of activity of the uroporphyrogen-1-synthetase in the manifest disease as well as in the clinically healthy carriers of genes. Since the clinical picture as well as the values of chemical laboratory examinations in the acute intermittent porphyria are extraordinarily variable, a long-term control of diagnostics and therapy is necessary.

Intranigral transplantation of fetal substantia nigra allograft in the hemiparkinsonian rhesus monkey.

Current clinical protocols for fetal cell transplantation for Parkinson's disease (PD) have focused on restoring dopamine in the striatum. However, there are now a number of human transplant recipients who have had robust innervation of the striatum by dopaminergic grafts (documented by positron emission tomography or by autopsy), but only a partial improvement in parkinsonian motor signs. Thus, there is a need for improved transplant strategies. In animal models of PD, there is recent evidence that restoring dopamine in the substantia nigra, instead of or in addition to the striatum, may be important to correct abnormal motor behavior. This pilot study examined the morphological features and behavioral effects of fetal dopaminergic neuronal allografts placed into the substantia nigra of three 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated hemiparkinsonian rhesus monkeys. We show that grafts can survive in host substantia nigra. Characteristics of the graft-host interface were variable. In one animal, reinnervation of host substantia nigra was observed, and this animal showed behavioral improvement in a reach-and-retrieval task.

Immunohistological localization of AFP and HCG in uniformly classified testis tumors.

Sixty seven germ cell tumors were studied for the presence of AFP and HCG by an immunoperoxidase technique. In the tumor tissues of 30 patients with seminomas no AFP-positivity was found, and in one case HCG positive giant cells were seen. In nonseminomatous tumors 54% were AFP-positive and 51% were HCG-positive. HCG was localized in syncytiotrophoblastic-like giant cells, occurring in choriocarcinomatous elements and as single cells in embryonal carcinomas, teratocarcinomas, and yolk sac tumors. AFP was demonstrable in 12 endodermal sinus tumor elements and, additionally, in solid cell clusters in embryonal carcinoma areas, arising as a component of a mixed germ cell tumor. In pure embryonal carcinomas we could not detect any positivity for either of the markers.
