Mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis in children.

Over a ten year period 105 children with a histological diagnosis of a mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis were diagnosed. Patients were divided into two groups according to their clinical presentation at the time of diagnosis. Ninety two children presented with nephrotic syndrome (NS) of whom 82 received steroid therapy. No response was observed in 26 children and in 56 remissions were short in duration and subsequent relapses were frequent. Eighty nine children with the nephrotic syndrome were treated with cyclophosphamide (CP) of whom 26 had a steroid resistant NS, 53 were steroid dependent and 10 were previously untreated. Eighty four entered remission with a mean duration of 46 months. Only 5 children did not respond to treatment with CP. No correlation could be found between the results of therapy and the degree of morphological changes on examination of renal biopsy. The second group consisted of 13 children presenting with a persistent nephritic syndrome and or proteinuria. These children were untreated and no progression of renal disease was observed after several years follow up.

Ultrastructure of vascular and connective tissue changes in primary syphilis.

Electron microscopical studies of primary syphilitic lesions showed intensive changes in the capillaries in the form of endothelial proliferation and extensive infilitration of different cells in the surrounding connective tissue. The degenerative changes in axon terminals could explain the painless course of primary induration.

Virus-like structures in the skin in the course of chronic lupus erythematosus.

Six skin biopsies of one patient, from foci of chronic lupus erythematosus in different stages of development of the disease and from unchanged skin were examined by electron microscope. The aim of the investigations performed was to check the presence of reticulotublar structures in these samples. Reticulotublar structures appeared in numerous quantities in early foci, while in scarred foci, as in structurally unchanged skin, they were, although always present, rare.

Vascular changes of chronic lupus erythematosus. Electron microscopic studies.

Vascular changes in the course of chronic lupus erythematosus were mainly characterized by a large, yet varying degree of proliferation of endothelial cells. In all cases examined the presence of tubular forms similar to paramyxoviruses was noted. The vascular basal membrane was noted to be either widened, segmentally separated or absent in places. Collagen fibres in these cases adhered directly to the endothelial cells. In the nuclei of endothelial cells of the infiltrate, "nuclear bodies" could be observed. In area surrounding capillaries oval concentrations of fibrilles 80 A in diameter were noticed.

Reticulo-tubular structures in endothelium of vascular ansa of kidney glomeruli in children.

In the presented cases, paramyxoviral-like reticulotubular structures were found in morphologically different forms of primary glomerular diseases in children. On the basis of the data obtained it seems likely that the diagnostic significance of these structures during the course of systemic lupus erythematosus and other collagen-related diseases must be carefully evaluated.

Phaeochromocytoma, Electron microscopic study on catecholamine storage.

The biochemical and electron-microscopical findings of eight cases of phaeochromocytoma and the ultrastructure of two cases of human adrenal medulla are presented here as regards catecholamine storage. Due to the rarity of phaeochromocytoma, other ultrastructural features are also described. The morphological characteristics of catecholamine-containing granules are considered on the basis of our investigations and results of other authors. These characteristics are discussed from the point of view of their value in the morphological differentiating of granules storing norepinephrine and those storing epinephrine.

Types of synapses in the claustrum of the cat.

Basing on structure of synaptic vesicles, symmetry of presynaptic and postsynaptic densities, and size of synaptic boutons, various types of synapses were found in the claustrum. Most of the synapses connect axon terminals with dendritic spines or small dendrities. They are usually asymmetrical with evident postsynaptic thickening. To this type, synapses between corticofugal axons, and claustral cells belong. Synapses between the axon terminals and larger dendrites or cell pericarion are much less frequent, 1-10 synaptic boutons adhering to pericarion were found on a single section of the claustral cell. Axoaxonic and crest-synapses also were found.
