Systematic Identification of Microtubule Posttranslational Modification "Readers" by Quantitative Proteomics.

Microtubules, dynamic polymers assembled from α, β-tubulin dimers, contribute to myriad cellular processes. This is largely attributed to microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). How MAPs selectively bind microtubules to carry out various functions is not known. The "Tubulin Code" theory proposes that posttranslational modifications (PTMs) of microtubules serve as signs that can be read by specific MAPs, thereby conferring specific functional properties to the microtubules. In support of this hypothesis, "reader" MAPs have been identified for various tubulin PTMs, but, until recently, no systematic screening had been performed to identify readers in an unbiased manner. We addressed this by developing a reader identification pipeline that uses quantitative mass spectrometry to interrogate the microtubule proteome of cells programmed to express specific PTMs. This pipeline can be used to identify readers for any tubulin PTM from various cell types as long as the writer enzymes are known. We also provide an alternative, complementary approach to obtain modified microtubules using a generic writer enzyme in vitro.

Quasi-Kondo phenomenon due to the dynamical Jahn-Teller effect.

A mechanism of the nonmagnetic Kondo effect is proposed on the basis of a multiorbital Anderson model coupled with dynamical Jahn-Teller (JT) phonons. An electron system coupled dynamically with JT phonons has a vibronic ground state with double degeneracy due to clockwise and anticlockwise rotational modes with entropy of log2. When a temperature is lower than a characteristic energy to turn the rotational direction, the rotational degree of freedom is eventually suppressed and the corresponding entropy is released, leading to quasi-Kondo behavior. We discuss a simple relation between the "Kondo" temperature and the JT energy.

Magnetic fluctuations of filled skutterudites emerging in the transition region between singlet and triplet states.

In order to clarify magnetic properties of filled skutterudites, we analyze the Anderson model including seven f orbitals hybridized with an au conduction band using a numerical technique. For n=2 corresponding to Pr-based filled skutterudites, where n is the local f-electron number, even if the ground state is a singlet, there remain significant magnetic fluctuations from a triplet state with a small excitation energy. This result can be understood by the fact that f-electron states are clearly distinguished as itinerant and localized ones in the filled skutterudite structure. This picture also explains the complex results for f-electron magnetic susceptibility and entropy for n=1-13.

Orbital ordering, new phases, and stripe formation in doped layered nickelates.

Ground-state properties of layered nickelates are investigated based on the orbital-degenerate Hubbard model coupled with lattice distortions, by using numerical techniques. The Néel state composed of spin S=1 ions is confirmed in the undoped limit x = 0. At x = 1/2, novel antiferromagnetic states, called CE- and E-type phases, are found by increasing the Hund's coupling. (3x2-r2/3y2-r2)-type orbital ordering is predicted to occur in a checkerboard-type charge-ordered state. At x = 1/3, both Coulombic and phononic interactions are found to be important, since the former stabilizes the spin stripe, while the latter leads to the striped charge order.

Odd-parity triplet pair induced by Hund's rule coupling.

We discuss microscopic aspects of the odd-parity triplet pair in orbital degenerate systems. From the concept of off-diagonal long-range order, a pair state is unambiguously defined as the eigenstate with the maximum eigenvalue of a pair correlation function. Performing this scheme by a numerical technique, we clarify that the odd-parity triplet pair occurs as an out-of-phase combination of local triplets induced by Hund's rule coupling for the lattice including two sites in the unit cell.

Unveiling new magnetic phases of undoped and doped manganites.

Novel ground-state spin structures in undoped and lightly doped manganites are investigated based on the orbital-degenerate double-exchange model, via mean-field and numerical techniques. In undoped manganites, a new antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, called the E-type phase, is found adjacent in parameter space to the A-type AFM phase. Its structure is in agreement with recent experimental results. This insulating E-AFM state is also competing with a ferromagnetic metallic phase as well. For doped layered manganites, the phase diagram includes another new AFM phase of the CxE1-x type. Experimental signatures of the new phases are discussed.

Electronic structure and the Fermi surface of PuCoGa5 and NpCoGa5.

Using a relativistic linear augmented-plane-wave method, we clarify energy band structures and Fermi surfaces of recently discovered plutonium-based superconductor PuCoGa5 and the isostructural material NpCoGa5. For PuCoGa5, we find several cylindrical sheets of Fermi surfaces with large volume, similar to CeMIn5, while for NpCoGa5, the Fermi surfaces are found to be similar to those of UMGa5. These similarities are discussed based on the j-j coupling scheme, suggesting some hints for the superconducting mechanism in HoCoGa5-type f-electron compounds.

Prediction of orbital ordering in single-layered ruthenates.

The key role of the orbital degree of freedom to understanding the magnetic properties of layered ruthenates is discussed based on the 3-orbital Hubbard model coupled to lattice distortions, using numerical and mean-field techniques. In the G-type antiferromagnetic phase of Ca(2)RuO(4), recent x-ray experiments reported 0.5 holes/site in the d(xy) orbital, while d(yz) and d(zx) orbitals contain 1.5 holes. This unexpected t(2g) hole distribution is explained by a novel orbital ordered (OO) state, stabilized by a combination of Coulombic and lattice effects. The phase diagram suggests the possibility of large magnetoresistance effects and a new ferromagnetic OO phase in ruthenates.
