General synthesis and delamination of highly crystalline transition-metal-bearing layered double hydroxides.

In this paper, we describe a general process for the synthesis and delamination of a family of highly crystalline Al-based and transition-metal-bearing layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Large-sized and monodispersed hexagonal platelike particles of binary-component M(II)-Al-CO3 and ternary-component M(II)-M'(II)-Al-CO3 LDHs (M(II) and M'(II) = Fe, Co, Ni, or Zn) were prepared at first by the urea method under optimized conditions. These CO32--LDHs were converted into other monovalent-anion-containing LDHs by means of a salt-acid treatment and subsequent anion-exchange processes. Finally, well-defined LDH nanosheets were obtained by delamination of NO3--LDHs in formamide.

Unusual crystallization behaviors of anatase nanocrystallites from a molecularly thin titania nanosheet and its stacked forms: increase in nucleation temperature and oriented growth.

Crystallization behaviors of anatase nanocrystallites from an ultrathin two-dimensional reactant composed of exfoliated titania nanosheets have been studied by monitoring the heating process of their well-organized films, with which the film thickness can be controlled from a molecularly thin monolayer to a stacked multilayer structure with a stepwise increment of approximately 1 nm. The heated products were identified by means of total reflection fluorescence X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis and in-plane X-ray diffraction measurements using a synchrotron radiation source. The films composed of five or more layers of stacked nanosheets were transformed into anatase at 400-500 degrees C, which is a normal crystallization temperature of anatase from bulk reactants. As the film became thinner by decreasing the number of nanosheet layers to five or less, the crystallization temperature was found to increase and finally reached 800 degrees C for the monolayer film. Interestingly, preferential growth of anatase along the c-axis was strongly promoted for these ultrathin films. These unusual behaviors may be understood in terms of crystallization from the two-dimensional system of scarcely distributed reactants. The titania nanosheet crystallite is much thinner than the unit cell dimensions of anatase, and therefore, extensive atomic diffusion is required for the transformation particularly for the ultrathin films with a critical number (2-3) of stacked nanosheet layers. There is some structural similarity between anatase and titania nanosheet, which may account for the oriented growth of anatase nanocrystallites.

Humidity-sensitive electrical conductivity of a Langmuir-Blodgett film of titania nanosheets: surface modification as induced by light irradiation under humid conditions.

Electrical conductivity of titania nanosheets was investigated for a single-layered Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film deposited onto a comb-type electrode (5 or 10 microm (electrode spacing) x 8 mm (electrode width)). The photoresponsive electrical properties of the film were investigated by irradiating with a Xe lamp under various atmospheric conditions. The atmosphere was controlled by introducing either oxygen or nitrogen gases containing different amounts of water vapor. As a result, the LB film behaved as an insulator with little photoresponse under dry atmospheric conditions. It became conductive on illuminating with a Xe lamp under a wet oxygen atmosphere. Conductivity increased with the increase of irradiation time (0-30 min) to attain a stationary value in 1 h. The highest conductive state thus attained lasted for several hours in the dark. The impedance of the film was measured over the frequency range of 1 MHz to 50 Hz by varying the relative humidity of an atmosphere from 0 to 100%. The results were analyzed by assuming an equivalent circuit consisting of one resistance (R) with constant Warburg component (W) and one capacitance (C) in parallel. The R component depended remarkably on the relative humidity, while the C component stayed nearly at the constant value. The dependence of R on water vapor (PH2O) was expressed by R = A[PH2O]n with A = constant and n = -2.9. The results were rationalized in terms of the surface modification of titania nanosheets to hydrophilic nature under the illumination of UV light.

Structure analysis of exfoliated unilamellar crystallites of manganese oxide nanosheets.

Structure analysis of unilamellar manganese oxide nanosheets obtained via exfoliation of layered manganese oxides was carried out utilizing synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray in-plane diffraction and polarization-dependent total reflection fluorescence X-ray absorption fine structure (PTRF-XAFS) analyses. A combination of SR excitation and the total reflection of incoming X-rays provides signals strong enough for both analyses even from a monolayer of the MnO(2) nanosheets having a concentration of 0.7 microg cm(-2). In addition, the mean oxidation state of constituent manganese ions in the MnO(2) sheets was estimated on the basis of XANES spectra, and bond valence sum calculations with the bond length obtained from the present EXAFS analyses. The obtained structural data revealed that the two-dimensional lattice of the MnO(2) sheets underwent a slight elongation upon delamination. These changes correspond to approximately 1% expansion of sheet area and 1-2% expansion of thickness, which can be understood by reduction of the mean oxidation number of manganese ions in the sheet through the exfoliation process.

Thermally stable luminescent composites fabricated by confining rare earth complexes in the two-dimensional gallery of titania nanosheets and their photophysical properties.

Fluorescent composite materials of exfoliated titania nanosheets, Ti(0.91)O(2), and rare earth (RE) complexes, Eu(phen)(2)Cl(3).2H(2)O and Tb(phen)(2)Cl(3).2H(2)O (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), were synthesized via flocculation between them. X-ray diffraction measurements and transmission electron microscopy observations confirmed a restacked lamellar structure for the composites, and elemental analysis revealed a high RE complex content of 15 wt %. The decomposition temperature of the complexes trapped in the composites was improved to 420 degrees C from 250 degrees C for the free form. The restacked composite composed of Ti(0.91)O(2) nanosheets and Eu(phen)(2) exhibited characteristic red emission from the complex, while the composite with Tb(phen)(2) gave featureless emission originated from the ligand. This phenomenon can be explained by a shift of triplet state level of the ligand after encapsulation in the host titania nanosheets. The quantum yield of europium complex in the composite was enhanced 1.6 times more than that of the pure complex.

Tetrahedral Co(II) coordination in alpha-type cobalt hydroxide: Rietveld refinement and X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

We report a Rietveld refinement analysis and X-ray absorption study on a green-color Cl(-)-intercalated alpha-type cobalt hydroxide phase. The refinement clearly demonstrated that one-fifth to one-sixth of the Co(II) at octahedral sites was replaced by pairs of tetrahedrally coordinated Co(II) on each side of the hydroxide plane, represented by a structural formula of [Co(octa)(0.828)Co(tetra)(0.348)(OH)2](0.348+)Cl(0.348).0.456H2O. X-ray absorption spectroscopy also indicated that the divalent cobalt were in local neighboring environments of both octahedral and tetrahedral coordination. Furthermore, UV-vis spectroscopic measurements elucidate the typical green/blue color of an alpha-type cobalt hydroxide.

Synthesis, anion exchange, and delamination of Co-Al layered double hydroxide: assembly of the exfoliated nanosheet/polyanion composite films and magneto-optical studies.

This paper describes a systematic study on the synthesis, anion exchange, and delamination of Co-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH), with the aim of achieving fabrication and clarifying the properties of LDH nanosheet/polyanion composite films. Co-Al-CO3 LDH hexagonal platelets of 4 mum in lateral size were synthesized by the urea method under optimized reaction conditions. The as-prepared CO3(2-)-LDH was converted to Cl- -LDH by treating with a NaCl-HCl mixed solution, retaining its high crystallinity and hexagonal platelike morphology. LDHs intercalated with a variety of anions (such as NO3-, ClO4-, acetate, lactate, dodecyl sulfate, and oleate) were further prepared from Cl- -LDH via an anion-exchange process employing corresponding salts. Exchanged products in various anion forms were found to show different delamination behaviors in formamide. Among them, best results were observed for NO3- -LDH in terms of the exfoliating degree and the quality of the exfoliated nanosheets. The delamination gave a pink transparent suspension containing well-defined nanosheets with lateral sizes of up to 2 microm. The resulting nanosheets were assembled layer-by-layer with an anionic polymer, poly(sodium styrene 4-sulfonate) (PSS), onto quartz glass substrates to produce composite films. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements revealed that the assembled multilayer films exhibited an interesting magneto-optical response.

Photocatalytic decomposition of an alkylammonium cation in a Langmuir-Blodgett film of a titania nanosheet.

The formation of inorganic-organic hybrid films of a titania nanosheet and an amphiphilic alkylammonium cation has been investigated, and the photocatalytic decomposition of the alkylammonium cation in the film has been pursued. When a solution of the amphiphilic alkylammonium salt (octadecylammonium chloride: ODAH+ Cl-) was spread on an interface between the air and a titania nanosheet suspension, the negatively charged nanosheets were adsorbed onto the floating monolayer of ODAH+ to form a hybrid monolayer. The hybridization was confirmed by pi-A isotherm measurements, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Multilayered films were fabricated in a layer-by-layer way by transferring the hybrid monolayers onto glass plates. Areas per ODAH+ cation in the films were estimated from the infrared (IR) spectra of the films, but these areas were smaller than those estimated from the pi-A isotherm curves. The orientation of the alkyl chain of ODAH+ in the hybrid film was determined by means of polarized IR spectroscopy. The alkyl chains were tilted 41 +/- 1 degrees and 47 +/- 1 degrees from the surface normal for the films prepared from the 8 and 20 ppm (ppm = mg dm(-3)) suspensions, respectively. Together with X-ray diffraction data of the films, the structure of the hybrid film was discussed. When the films were illuminated with a UV light, the absorption intensities due to the alkyl chain of ODAH+ decreased exponentially, indicating the photocatalytic decomposition of ODAH+ by the titania nanosheets in the films. Deviation from the exponential trend in the decomposition rate was observed in the initial period for the hybrid films prepared from the suspensions at low concentrations. Interestingly, the layered structure of the hybrid film was disturbed significantly after the ODAH+ cations were decomposed.

Photoinduced hydrophilic conversion properties of titania nanosheets.

Photoinduced hydrophilic conversion properties of titania nanosheets were investigated. A highly hydrophilic state was achieved on the monolayer film surface of titania nanosheets, the thickness of which is less than 1 nm. The hydrophilic conversion rate (k) for the monolayer film of titania nanosheets was proportional to the intensity (I) of irradiated light, suggesting that the hydrophilic conversion of the titania nanosheet surface proceeded under light-limited conditions even with a high concentration of photoexcited carriers. As the number of layers of titania nanosheets increased, the dependence behavior changed from k proportional, variant I(1.0) to k proportional, variant I(0.5), indicating that the recombination processes become dominant in the multilayer films of titania nanosheets. In-plane X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses showed a very small but reproducible structural change of titania nanosheets upon UV irradiation.

Selective and controlled synthesis of alpha- and beta-cobalt hydroxides in highly developed hexagonal platelets.

We report on the controlled synthesis of single-crystal platelets of alpha- and beta-Co(OH)2 via homogeneous precipitation using hexamethylenetetramine as a hydrolysis agent. The alpha- and beta-Co(OH)2 hexagonal platelets of several micrometers in width and about 15 nm in thickness were reproducibly yielded in rather dilute CoCl2 solutions in the presence and absence of NaCl at 90 degrees C, respectively. The phase and size control of the products were achieved by varying both CoCl2 and NaCl concentrations. Polarized optical microscope observations revealed clear liquid crystallinity of colloidal suspensions of these high aspect-ratio platelets. The as-prepared alpha-Co(OH)2 containing interlayer chloride ions was intercalated with various inorganic or organic anions, keeping its high crystallinity and hexagonal platelike morphology.

Photocatalyst of lamellar aggregates of RuOx-loaded perovskite nanosheets for overall water splitting.

Overall photocatalytic splitting of water was achieved using a restacked aggregate of exfoliated nanosheets of Ca(2)Nb(3)O(10), which was synthesized by flocculating a colloidal suspension of the nanosheets with alkali-metal ions and a trace amount of ruthenium red, a trinuclear complex of ([(NH(3))(5)Ru-O-Ru(NH(3))(4)-O-Ru(NH(3))(5)]Cl(6). The as-restacked material showed the evolution of H(2) gas from water immediately after UV irradiation, while O(2) evolution was observed only after some induction time, which may be understood by the possible oxidation of ruthenium red to RuO(x) in the initial stage. The restacked aggregate, which was heated at 773 K to convert the ruthenium complex to the oxide, underwent the stoichiometric splitting of water upon initiation of UV illumination, verifying the hypothesis. Total decomposition of water could not be attained with the bulk layered host of KCa(2)Nb(3)O(10) as well as its RuO(x)-loaded forms obtained via a conventional impregnation procedure. This clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the present exfoliation-restacking route for loading RuO(x) to improve and enhance the photocatalytic activities of layered semiconducting materials. A homogeneous distribution of RuO(x)was suggested by XPS depth-profile analysis on the materials obtained through the exfoliation-restacking process.

Fabrication of densely packed titania nanosheet films on solid surface by use of Langmuir-Blodgett deposition method without amphiphilic additives.

Densely packed exfoliated nanosheet films such as Ti0.91O2, Ti0.8M0.2O2 (M = Co, Ni), Ti0.6Fe0.4O2, and Ca2Nb3O10 on solid substrates were prepared by the LB transfer method without any amphiphilic additives at the air-water interface. Nanosheet crystallites covered nearly 95% on the solid surface with minimum overlapping of nanosheets. The LB transfer method of the Ti0.91O2 nanosheet monolayer film is applicable for not only hydrophilic substrates such as quartz, silicon, indium-tin oxide (ITO), and glass but also the hydrophobic Au surface. On the basis of these points, the LB transfer method has advantages compared to the alternating layer-by-layer method, which makes use of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes such as poly(ethylenimine) (PEI). Adsorption of hydrophobic Ti0.91O2 nanosheets at the air-water interface is responsible for this LB transfer deposition method. The addition of tetrabutylammonium bromide into the subphase assisted the adsorption, causing an increase in the adsorbed amount of Ti0.91O2 nanosheets at the air-water interface.

Photocurrent generation from semiconducting manganese oxide nanosheets in response to visible light.

Unilamellar nanosheet crystallites of manganese oxide generated the anodic photocurrent under visible light irradiation (lambda < 500 nm), while the nanosheets themselves were stable as revealed by in-plane XRD and UV-visible absorption spectra. The band gap energy was estimated to be 2.23 eV on the basis of the photocurrent action spectrum. The molecular thickness of approximately 0.5 nm may facilitate the charge separation of excited electrons and holes, which is generally very difficult for strongly localized d-d transitions. The monolayer film of MnO2 nanosheets exhibited the incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of 0.16% in response to the monochromatic light irradiation (lambda = 400 nm), which is comparable to those for sensitization of monolayer dyes adsorbed on a flat single-crystal surface. The efficiency declined with increasing the layer number of MnO2 nanosheets, although the optical absorption was enhanced. The recombination of the excited electron-hole pairs may become dominant when the carriers need to migrate a longer distance than 1 layer through multilayered nanosheets.

Structural features of titanate nanotubes/nanobelts revealed by Raman, X-ray absorption fine structure and electron diffraction characterizations.

High-purity nanotubes and nanobelts could be controllably obtained in hydrothermal treatments of anatase TiO(2) in concentrated NaOH solution depending on treating temperature and duration. Their structural features were studied employing X-ray diffraction, Raman, X-ray absorption fine structure, and electron diffraction characterizations. The results reveal that both the nanotubes and nanobelts might be of layered titanate structure. The similarity and difference among the nanotubes/nanobelts and other bulk titanates represented by trititanate H(2)Ti(3)O(7) and lepidocrocite-type H(0.7)Ti(1.825) square(0.175)O(4.0).H(2)O were also presented.

Layer-by-layer assembled multilayer films of titanate nanotubes, Ag- or Au-loaded nanotubes, and nanotubes/nanosheets with polycations.

Aqueous suspensions of hydrothermally synthesized titanate nanotubes and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) have been employed to fabricate multilayer films on various substrates in a layer-by-layer fashion. Atomic force microscopy displays the dense coverage of the substrate surface by the nanotubes. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy confirms the consecutive growth of PDDA/nanotube layer pairs. Single crystalline Ag and Au nanoparticles with narrow size distribution spatially correlating with the nanotubes have been obtained by treating the nanotubes with AgNO(3) or HAuCl(4) aqueous solution followed by chemical reduction. The noble metal nanoparticles show a strong surface plasmon absorption band. A multilayer film construction of the noble-metal-loaded nanotubes has also been achieved. This process has been further extended to the heteroassembly of nanotubes/nanosheets in different layer sequences.
