Formation of water-dispersible nanotubular graphitic assembly decorated with isothiouronium ion groups and its supramolecular functionalization.

A newly designed Gemini-shaped hexabenzocoronene amphiphile (1), carrying an isothiouronium ion-appended side chain, self-assembles in CH2Cl2 to form a nanotubular object, whose graphitic wall is densely covered by a positively charged molecular layer of isothiouronium ion pendants. The graphitic nanotube can be dispersed uniformly in aqueous media owing to effective hydration as well as electrostatic repulsion. Post-supramolecular functionalization of the nanotube surface is possible, without disruption of the tubular morphology, by taking advantage of a specific interaction of the isothiouronium ion pendants with oxoanion guests. Mixing with sodium poly(4-styrenesulfonate) results in wrapping of the nanotube, while complexation with an electron-accepting oxoanion such as anthraquinone carboxylate allows photoinduced electron transfer from the graphitic wall to the bound guest molecules.

Crystallographic and chiroptical studies on tetraarylferrocenes for use as chiral rotary modules for molecular machines.

A crystal structure of the racemic form of chiral molecular scissors 1 with a trans configuration at the azobenzene unit (rac-trans-1), in which the scissors adopt a closed geometry with two blade phenyl groups that overlap each other, was successfully determined. X-ray crystallographic determination of the structure of (1S,1'S)-10, which is a derivative of the key precursor of trans-1, was also successful. On the basis of the crystal structure of (1S,1'S)-10, the absolute configuration of 1 and related molecular machines, such as molecular pedal 2, and self-locking rotor 3, which all contain a chiral tetrasubstituted ferrocene module, were determined. A correlation between the absolute configuration and the circular dichroism properties of these molecular machines and their synthetic precursors was also determined.

Catalysis of a peptidic micellar assembly covalently immobilized within mesoporous silica channels: importance of amphiphilic spatial design.

A mesostructured silica/organic composite 1-MS, constructed from a rodlike micelle of amino acid amphiphile 1 that has a condensable head group and that can be used as a template, was found to be able to catalyze the acetalization of cyclohexanone, in ethanol at 25 degrees C (50% in 12 h), whereas no reaction took place with unfunctionalized mesoporous silica. In sharp contrast, hydrolytic removal of the C16 alkyl tail of immobilized 1 resulted in the complete disappearance of the catalytic activity, which suggests the importance of a hydrophobic inner domain for the admission of cyclohexanone. Unsupported peptide amphiphile 2, under identical conditions to those above, was inefficient for acetalization regardless of the absence (2% in 24 h) or presence of mesoporous silica (7% in 24 h). Reference composite 2-MS, which is a noncovalently immobilized peptidic micelle, was virtually inactive (1% in 24 h). These observations indicate the importance of covalent immobilization of the peptidic rod micelle for catalysis. Mesostructured silicate 3-MS hybridized with a nonpeptidic, ammonium ion amphiphile (3) showed a certain catalytic activity, but the yield (12% in 24 h) of the acetal was much lower than that achieved by using 1-MS as the catalyst. Amorphous silica with immobilized 1 on its surface was much less active than 1-MS for acetalization (5% in 24 h).

Photoconductive coaxial nanotubes of molecularly connected electron donor and acceptor layers.

Controlled self-assembly of a trinitrofluorenone-appended gemini-shaped amphiphilic hexabenzocoronene selectively formed nanotubes or microfibers with different photochemical properties. In these nanotubes, which are 16 nanometers in diameter and several micrometers long, a molecular layer of electron-accepting trinitrofluorenone laminates an electron-donating graphitic layer of pi-stacked hexabenzocoronene. The coaxial nanotubular structure allows photochemical generation of spatially separated charge carriers and a quick photoconductive response with a large on/off ratio greater than 10(4). In sharp contrast, the microfibers consist of a charge-transfer complex between the hexabenzocoronene and trinitrofluorenone parts and exhibit almost no photocurrent generation.

Stabilization of a kinetically favored nanostructure: surface ROMP of self-assembled conductive nanocoils from a norbornene-appended hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene.

Newly designed norbornene-appended hexabenzocoronene 1 self-assembles, upon diffusion of an Et(2)O vapor into its CH(2)Cl(2) solution, to form either graphitic nanocoils or nanotubes, depending on the self-assembling conditions. The coiled assembly, selectively formed at 15 degrees C, is a kinetic intermediate for the tubular assembly and transforms into nanotubes on standing at 25 degrees C. However, post-ring-opening metathesis polymerization of the norbornene pendants of 1 enhances the thermal stability of the coiled assembly as well as the tubular one and disables a thermodynamic coil-to-tube transition. The polymerized nanocoils show an electroconductivity of 1 x 10(-)(4) S cm(-)(1) upon doping with I(2), while the nonpolymerized nanocoils are disrupted upon being doped.

Relationship between incoherent excitation energy migration processes and molecular structures in zinc(II) porphyrin dendrimers.

Multiporphyrin dendrimers are among the most promising architectures to mimic the oxygenic light-harvesting complex because of their structural similarities and synthetic convenience. The overall geometries of dendrimers are determined by the core structure, the type of dendron, and the number of generations of interior repeating units. The rigid core and bulky volume of exterior porphyrin units in multiporphyrin dendrimers give rise to well-ordered three-dimensional structures. As the number of generations of interior repeating units increases, however, the overall structures of dendrimers become disordered and randomized due to the flexibility of the repeating units. To reveal the relationship between molecular structure and processes of excitation-energy migration in multiporphyrin dendrimers, we calculated the molecular structure and measured the time-resolved transient absorption and fluorescence anisotropy decays for various hexaarylbenzene-anchored polyester zinc(II) porphyrin dendrimers along with three types of porphyrin dendrons as references. We found that the congested two-branched type dendrimers exhibit more efficient energy migration processes than one- or three-branched type dendrimers because of multiple energy migration pathways, and the three-dimensional packing efficiency of dendrimers strongly depends on the type of dendrons.

A self-locking molecule operative with a photoresponsive key.

Rotary host 1, composed of a ferrocene unit as a rotary module, is conformationally locked internally in apolar solvents such as benzene by a double intramolecular Zn-N coordination between the zinc porphyrin and aniline units, attached to each cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ring. Upon addition of the cis form of 1,2-bispyridylethylene (cis-2) to (+)-1 ([cis-2]/[(+)-1] = 5.0), an enantiomer of 1, the intramolecular Zn-N coordination bonds in (+)-1 are readily cleaved to form an externally locked, cyclodimeric one-to-one complex (+)-1 subset cis-2, accompanying a rotation of the ferrocene module, as visualized by CD spectroscopy. In contrast, use of trans-2, in place of cis-2, under otherwise identical conditions to the above, did not result in releasing the internal double lock of (+)-1. Such a large difference between the isomers of 2 in the affinity toward host 1, along with their capabilities of photochemical interconversion, allowed for the demonstration of a reversible self-locking operation of 1. Namely, the externally locked state of 1, as in the form of 1 supersetcis-2, spontaneously retrieves the internally locked state, after the release of 2 from 1 upon cis-to-trans photochemical isomerization of ligating 2, while the backward photochemical isomerization of 2 in the presence of 1 results in switching of 1 to its externally locked state.

Sensing of chiral fullerenes by a cyclic host with an asymmetrically distorted pi-electronic component.

Upon inclusion complexation with a racemic mixture of chiral fullerene C76 ((+/-)-C76), a novel cyclic host (1Rh) composed of a chiral N-methylporphyrin (PNMe) and a methylrhodium porphyrin (PRh) exhibited at 20 degrees C a 1H NMR spectral profile with diastereoisomerically split signals due to the NH group of PNMe. In contrast, because of a faster guest exchange dynamics, metal-free reference 12H, under identical conditions, did not show any signature of such diastereoisomeric splitting. Owing to the excellent resolution (15.6 Hz) of the split NH signals, the complexation with 1Rh allowed for the accurate determination of the optical purity of C76. On the basis of the 1H NMR spectral profiles of 1Rh in toluene-d8 at 20 degrees C in the presence of enantiomer mixtures of C76 of different optical purities, an absolute Deltaepsilon value of 58.5 M-1 cm-1 at 330 nm was obtained for enantiomerically pure C76.

Construction of segregated arrays of multiple donor and acceptor units using a dendritic scaffold: remarkable dendrimer effects on photoinduced charge separation.

Dendritic molecules appended with multiple zinc porphyrin units (DPm, m [number of zinc porphyrin units] = 6, 12, and 24) trap bipyridine compounds carrying multiple fullerene units (Py2Fn, n [number of C60 units] = 1-3), affording coordination complexes DPm superset Py2Fn having a photoactive layer consisting of spatially segregated donor and acceptor arrays on their surface. Complexes DPm superset Py2Fn are stable enough (K [average binding affinity] = 1.1 x 10(6)-4.4 x 10(6) M(-1) in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C) to be isolated by gel permeation chromatography. UHV-STM microscopy enables clear visualization of a petal-like structure of DP12 superset Py2F3. Photoexcitation of the zinc porphyrin units in DPm superset Py2Fn results in a zinc porphyrin-to-fullerene electron transfer to generate a charge separation. The charge-separation rate constant (kCS) in CH2Cl2 at 20 degrees C increases from 0.26 x 10(10) to 2.3 x 10(10) s(-1) upon increment of m and n, whereas the charge-recombination rate constant (kCR) remains almost unchanged at 4.5 x 10(6)-6.7 x 10(6) s(-1). Consequently, DP24 supersetPy2F3 furnishes the largest ratio of kCS/kCR (3400) among the family.

Photochemical stitching of a tubularly assembled hexabenzocoronene amphiphile by dimerization of coumarin pendants.

A coumarin-appended amphiphilic hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (1) self-assembled to form graphitic nanotubes. Upon irradiation of lambda > 300 nm, the nanotubes in the solid state and suspension both underwent dimerization of the coumarin pendants, affording covalently stitched nanotubes, which were hardly soluble in CHCl3, a good solvent of 1. In contrast, a thin film cast from a homogeneous solution of 1 was intact to photoirradiation. Owing to the reversible nature of the photochemical stitching, both negative and positive patterns of the graphitic nanotubes were developed on a silicon substrate by a lithographic post processing.

Mechanical twisting of a guest by a photoresponsive host.

Molecular analogues of a variety of mechanical devices such as shuttles, brakes, unidirectional rotors and tweezers have been created. But these 'molecular machines' have not yet been used to mechanically manipulate a second molecule in a controlled and reversible manner. Here we show that light-induced scissor-like conformational changes of one molecule can give rise to mechanical twisting of a non-covalently bound guest molecule. To realize this coupling of molecular motions, we use a previously designed system: a ferrocene moiety with an azobenzene strap, each end of which is attached to one of the two cyclopentadienyl rings of the ferrocene unit, acts as a pivot so that photoisomerization of the strap rotates the ferrocene rings relative to each other and thereby also changes the relative position of two 'pedal' moieties attached to the ferrocene rings. We translate this effect into intermolecular coupling of motion by endowing the pedals with binding sites, which allow the host system to form a stable complex with a bidentate rotor molecule. Using circular dichroism spectroscopy, we show that the photoinduced conformational changes of the host are indeed transmitted and induce mechanical twisting of the rotor molecule. This design concept, which significantly extends the successful coupling of motion beyond the intramolecular level seen in synthetic allosteric receptors, might allow for the remote control of molecular events in larger interlocked molecular systems.

Semibiological molecular machine with an implemented "AND" logic gate for regulation of protein folding.

A semibiological molecular machine with an implemented "AND" logic gate was developed, which was capable of controlling the folding process of proteins in response to ATP and light as input stimuli. The molecular design made use of a genetically engineered chaperonin GroEL bearing, at both entrance parts of its cylindrical cavity, cysteine residues, which were functionalized by an azobenzene derivative to construct photoresponsive mechanical gates (azo-GroEL). This engineered chaperonin trapped denatured green fluorescent protein (GFP(denat)) and prohibited its refolding. However, when hosting azo-GroEL detected ATP (input stimulus 1) and UV light (input stimulus 2) at the same time, it quickly released GFP(denat) to allow its refolding. In contrast, reception of either input stimulus 1 or 2 resulted in only very slow or no substantial refolding of GFP(denat). Implementation of such "AND" logic gate mechanisms in mechanically driven biomolecular systems is an important step toward the design of secured drug delivery systems.

Dramatic effect of dispersed carbon nanotubes on the mechanical and electroconductive properties of polymers derived from ionic liquids.

Free-radical polymerization of an imidazolium ion-based ionic liquid bearing a methacrylate group, gelling with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), allows fabrication of a mechanically reinforced, electroconductive soft material (bucky plastic). A film sample of this material displays an excellent conductivity of 1 S cm(-1) and a 120-fold enhancement of the Young's modulus at a 7 wt % content of SWNTs. The conductivity is temperature-dependent in the range 5-300 K, suggesting that the conductive process involves carrier hopping. Scanning electron and atomic force micrographs of a bucky plastic film display the presence of crosslinked networks consisting of finely dispersed SWNTs. Such nanotube networks, developed in the polymer matrix, likely suppress slipping of entrapped polymer molecules via a strong interfacial interaction and also facilitate intertubular carrier transport. Although a bucky plastic derived from a vinylimidazolium ion-based ionic liquid monomer shows a comparable conductivity to that of the methacrylate version, the film is brittle irrespective of the presence or absence of SWNTs.

Positive heterotropic cooperativity for selective guest binding via electronic communications through a fused zinc porphyrin array.

Upon binding with C60 and diamines, such as 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) and N,N,N',N'-tetramethylhexane-1,6-diamine (TMHDA), cyclic host 1 possessing two electronically coupled binding sites displays negative homotropic cooperativity and positive heterotropic cooperativity, and their ternary mixtures preferentially form inclusion complexes with hetero-guest pairs 1 supersetC60*bpy and 1 supersetC60*TMHDA under appropriate conditions. Spectroscopic titration profiles in toluene at 20 degrees C demonstrated that the association constants (Kassoc) of C60 with monodiamine complexes 1 supersetbpy (2.8 x 105 M-1) and 1 supersetTMHDA (1.5 x 105 M-1) are 8.5 and 4.5 times greater than that of C60 with guest-free 1 (3.3 x 104 M-1), respectively. On the other hand, mono-C60 complex 1 supersetC60 was 6.1 times more accessible than guest-free 1 toward TMHDA. Absorption spectroscopy in the absence of 1 indicated no direct interaction between C60 and diamines.
