Hydroheteroarylation of alkynes under mild nickel catalysis.

Nickel complexes having a bulky tri(sec-alkyl)phosphine ligand catalyze hydroheteroarylation of alkynes at 35 degrees C. Selective activation of an Ar-H bond over an Ar-CN bond of N-protected 3-cyanoindoles is achieved by a proper choice of ligand and/or an N-protecting group. The catalysis is applicable to a diverse range of heteroarenes to afford cis-hydroheteroarylation products in highly chemo- and stereoselective manners. Excellent regioselectivity is observed with unsymmetrical alkynes to give the corresponding heteroaryl-substituted ethenes having a larger substituent trans to an aryl group.

Cyanoesterification of 1,2-dienes: synthesis and transformations of highly functionalized alpha-cyanomethylacrylate esters.

A Ni/PMe2Ph catalyst is found to effect regioselective addition of cyanoformate esters across 1,2-dienes, giving rise to 3-alkoxycarbonyl-3-butenenitriles. Functional groups such as cyano, protected hydroxyl, and amino groups in the 1,2-diene substrates are tolerated. Isomerization of the initial products to thermodynamically more stable isomers takes place possibly through further oxidative addition of the C-CN bond of 3-alkoxycarbonyl-3-butenenitriles to Ni(0) followed by reductive elimination. The cyanoesterification products undergo further addition across alkynes in the presence of a Ni/P(4-CF3-C6H4)3 catalyst.

Allylcyanation of alkynes: regio- and stereoselective access to functionalized di- or trisubstituted acrylonitriles.

Allyl cyanides are found to add across alkynes in the presence of a nickel catalyst prepared from Ni(cod)2 and P(4-CF3-C6H4)3 in situ to give variously functionalized di- or trisubstituted acrylonitriles in highly stereoselective manners possibly via a pi-allylnickel species as an intermediate. alpha-Siloxyallyl cyanides also react at the gamma-position of a cyano group with both internal and terminal alkynes having various functional groups to give silyl enol ethers, which give the corresponding aldehydes or ketones upon hydrolysis.

Stereoselective cross-coupling reaction of 1,1-Diboryl-1-alkenes with electrophiles: a highly stereocontrolled approach to 1,1,2-triaryl-1-alkenes.

Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of 1,1-diboryl-1-alkenes with aryl and alkenyl iodides was found to proceed stereoselectively, giving rise to the corresponding mono-coupled product as a single diastereomer with E-configuration. Second coupling of the initial product with another aryl iodide affords diverse triarylalkenes in their stereochemically pure form. This highly stereoselective approach for triarylalkenes allows one to synthesize both diastereomers in one pot from 1,1-diboryl-1-alkenes.

Alkenyl- and aryl[2-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl]dimethylsilanes: an entry to tetraorganosilicon reagents for the silicon-based cross-coupling reaction.

Alkenyl- and aryl[2-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl]dimethylsilanes, highly stable tetraorganosilicon reagents, are found to react with aryl and alkenyl iodides in the presence of a palladium catalyst and K2CO3 as a base, significantly milder conditions compared with those ever reported for the silicon-based cross-coupling reactions. The reaction tolerates a wide range of functional groups, including silyl protectors, and allows a gram-scale synthesis to recover and reuse the silicon residue.

Modern synthetic methods for fluorine-substituted target molecules.

Fluorine has come to be recognized as a key element in materials science: in heat-transfer agents, liquid crystals, dyes, surfactants, plastics, elastomers, membranes, and other materials. Furthermore, many fluorine-containing biologically active agents are finding applications as pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Progress in synthetic fluorine chemistry has been critical to the development of these fields and has led to the invention of many novel fluorinated molecules as future drugs and materials. As a result of the electronic effects of fluorine substituents, fluorinated substrates and reagents often exhibit unusual and unique chemical properties, which often make them incompatible with established synthetic methods. Thus, the problem of how to control the unusual properties of compounds with fluorine substituents deserves much attention, so as to promote the design of facile, efficient, and environmentally benign methods for the synthesis of valuable organofluorine targets.

Stannylative cycloaddition of enynes catalyzed by palladium-iminophosphine.

Palladium-iminophosphine complex catalyzes stannylative cycloaddition of conjugated enynes using hexabutyldistannoxane as a stannylating agent to afford highly substituted 3-alkenylphenylstannanes regioselectively. Stannylative cross-cycloaddition reactions between different enynes or between enynes and diynes are also achieved. The reaction is successfully applied to a concise synthesis of alcyopterosin N, which has been isolated recently from sub-Antarctic soft coral, Alcyonium paessleri.

Solvent-free asymmetric olefin hydroformylation catalyzed by highly cross-linked polystyrene-supported (R,S)-BINAPHOS-Rh(I) complex.

Using an (R,S)-BINAPHOS-Rh(I) catalyst that is covalently anchored to a highly cross-linked polystyrene support, asymmetric hydroformylation of olefins was performed in the absence of organic solvents. The reaction of cis-2-butene, a gaseous substrate, provided (S)-2-methylbutanal with 100% regioselectivity and 82% ee upon treatment with H(2) (12 atm) and CO (12 atm) in a batchwise reactor equipped with a fixed bed. The polymer-supported catalyst was applicable to a continuous vapor-flow column reactor, and thus, 3,3,3-trifluoropropene was converted into (S)-2-trifluoromethylpropanal with an iso/normal ratio of 95/5 and 90% ee. Less volatile olefins, such as styrene, vinyl acetate, 1-alkenes, and fluorinated alkenes, were successfully converted into the corresponding isoaldehydes with high ee values, when they were injected through a supercritical CO(2)-flow column reactor. Successive injection of a series of olefins realized the conversion of an olefin library into an optically active aldehyde library.

Asymmetric alternating copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and CO2 with dimeric zinc complexes.

Dimeric zinc complex 2a [ = Et(2)Zn(2)(1a)(2)] has been synthesized by the reaction of Et(2)Zn and (S)-diphenyl(pyrrolidin-2-yl)methanol (1a-H). X-ray crystallography revealed that the alkoxide ligand replaced one of the two ethyl groups of Et(2)Zn and formed a five-membered chelate ring through a Zn-N dative bond. Two zinc centers were bridged by oxygen atoms to form a Zn(2)O(2) four-membered ring with a syn relationship between the two ethyl groups on the zinc centers. Dimeric zinc complex 2a was an active catalyst for asymmetric alternating copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and CO(2). An MALDI-TOF mass spectrum of the obtained copolymer showed that the copolymerization was initiated by the insertion of CO(2) into Zn-alkoxide to give [(S)-diphenyl(pyrroridin-2-ly)methoxy]-[C(=O)O-(1,2-cyclohexylene)-O](n)-H (copolymer I), including chiral ligand 1a as an initiating group. Complex 3a-OEt ( = EtZn(1a)(2)ZnOEt), in which an ethoxy group replaced one of the two ethyl groups in 2a, also polymerized cyclohexene oxide and CO(2) with higher catalytic activity and enantioselectivity than 2a and afforded EtO-[C(=O)O-(1,2-cyclohexylene)-O](n)-H ( = copolymer III), including an ethoxy group as an initiating group. Throughout the studies, dimeric zinc species are indicated to be the active species for the copolymerization. It is also depicted that the substituent on the aryl moiety in diaryl(pyrrolidin-2-yl)methanol 2b-e influenced the polymerization activity.

gem-Silylborylation of an sp carbon: novel synthesis of 1-boryl-1-silylallenes.

[reaction: see text] Novel synthesis of 1-boryl-1-silylallenes involving gem-silylborylation of 3-chloro- or 3-alkoxyalkyn-1-yllithiums with (dimethylphenylsilyl)(pinacolato)borane has been established. The reaction proceeds via 1,2-migration of the silyl group from the negatively charged boron atom of an intermediary borate complex to the terminal acetylenic carbon and is accelerated by the addition of chlorotrimethylsilane in the case that methanesulfonyloxy is employed as a leaving group. Furthermore, axially enantioenriched products could be prepared from mesylates of optically active propargylic alcohols.
