[Effect of extraneous rare earths (REs) on form of soil exchangeable REs and heavy metals].

The effects of extraneous rare earths (REs) on the form of exchangeable REs and heavy metals Fe, Mn and Zn in yellow cinnamon soil in different terms were studied through soil culture in both dry and inundated condition. The result showed that the treatments of REs enhanced the contents of soil exchangeable REs (EX-REs) and its distribution coefficients also increased while most still remained under 10%. The contents of EX-REs in inundated condition were higher than that in dry condition, but they decreased with the duration of soil culture. The composition of EX-REs in soil gradually approached that in extraneous REs, and it remained relatively steady over the treatment with 200 mg.kg-1 applied REs. Applying REs raised the contents of exchangeable heavy metals, and the contents of exchangeable Fe, Mn and Zn increased with linear trend, of which the effect of REs on Mn was the strongest one.

[Transportation processes and rates of heavy metals in an artificial rainstorm runoff under different land use types].

Studies on the transportation and flux of various kinds of heavy metals in runoff and sediment of five typical landuse types in West Tiaoxi catchment showed that the losses of Cu (0.21 mg.m-2.min-1), Zn (0.45 mg.m-2.min-1), and Pb (0.15 mg.m-2.min-1) in mulberry and that of Cr (0.06 mg.m-2.min-1) in paddy field were larger in surface runoff, while their losses in pinery were very small. Suspended thin particles played the main role on transporting heavy metals in surface runoff under all kinds of land uses. The losses from runoff were much lower than that from sediment, which only occupied 0.1%-4.9%, and the loss rate of Cu from runoff and sediment was higher than that of Cr, Pb and Zn.

The expression of protein betaig-h3 inducible by transforming growth factor-beta in keratoconus and normal cornea.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the expression of a protein inducible by transforming growth factor-beta (betaig-h3) in normal cornea and keratoconus and discuss the effects of extracellular matrix on keratoconus. METHODS: In situ hybridization method was used to detect the expression of betaig-h3 in the cornea. The cDNA library was screened with human betaig-h3 cDNA probe to orient betaig-h3 mRNA in cells. The level of betaig-h3 was detected in normal cornea and keratoconus. RESULTS: betaig-h3 mainly expressed in the stroma in normal cornea and keratoconus. The positive expression decreased along with the increase of severity of the keratoconus. The negative expression was seen in severe lesions of keratoconus. The strong positive expression was seen at the interface area between the normal and the lesion of keratoconus. CONCLUSION: The decreasing of the level of betaig-h3 causes the diminution of corneal steadiness that is related to the formation of keratoconus.

Expression of betaig-h3 in keratoconus and normal cornea.

OBJECTIVES: To observe the expression of betaig-h3 in normal cornea and keratoconus and to elucidate the role of extracellular matrix in keratoconus. METHODS: In situ hybridization was used to detect the expression of betaig-h3 in the cornea. The cDNA library was screened with human betaig-h3 cDNA probe to locate betaig-h3 mRNA in cells. RESULTS: Expression of betaig-h3 was found mainly in the stroma of the normal cornea and keratoconus, but decrease depending on the degree of keratopathy. In some serious cases, no expression signal was detected. The strongest expression was seen at the border of the normal region and keratoconus. CONCLUSIONS: betaig-h3, the structural component of the extracellular matrix, can affect cell adhensiveness in the development of corneal fibrous interstitial organization. During the development of keratoconus, decreasing levels of betaig-h3 cause the diminution of corneal steadiness, which is related to formation of keratoconus.
