Controllable water permeation on a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-modified nanostructured copper mesh film.

Water permeation is important for various applications in industry, agriculture, and daily life. However, most research mainly focuses on the static wettability on different surfaces, and the dynamic properties of the micro- and nanostructure-enhanced responsive wettability is lacking. And the relevant application research is rare, which still remains a challenge. Herein we report the temperature-controllable water permeation on a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-modified nanostructured copper mesh film. At low temperatures (below 25 degrees C), the film shows good water permeability because of the highly hydrophilic nature, and as a result, the water can easily penetrate through the film. At high temperatures (above 40 degrees C), it is impermeable to water because of the superhydrophobicity and the large negative capillary effect induced by the micro- and nanostructures. The excellent controllability of water permeation on this film may be convenient for use in many processes including filtration, water/oil separation, and so on. A detailed investigation indicates that the special nanostructures and the appropriate size of the microscale mesh pores not only influence the static contact angles of the mesh film, but also, more importantly, greatly improve the dynamic properties of wettability at different temperatures simultaneously, which plays a crucial role in the excellent controllability over water permeation on this film. This work may also provide interesting insight into the design of novel functional devices that are relevant to surface wettability.

Bioinspired surfaces with special wettability.

Biomimetic research indicates that many phenomena regarding wettability in nature, such as the self-cleaning effect on a lotus leaf and cicada wing, the anisotropic dewetting behavior on a rice leaf, and striking superhydrophobic force provided by a water strider's leg, are all related to the unique micro- and nanostructures on the surfaces. It gives us much inspiration to realize special wettability on functional surfaces through the cooperation between the chemical composition and the surface micro- and nanostructures, which may bring great advantages in a wide variety of applications in daily life, industry, and agriculture. This Account reviews recent progress in these aspects.

A study of interfacial dilational properties of two different structure demulsifiers at oil-water interfaces.

The interfacial dilational viscoelastic properties of two demulsifiers with straight chain (SP-169) and branched chain (AE-121) at the oil-water interfaces were investigated by means of the longitudinal waves method and the interfacial tension relaxation method, respectively. The results obtained by the longitudinal waves method showed that the dilational viscous component for AE-121 and SP-169 also passed through a maximum value with increasing concentration. It was found that the maximum value appeared at different demulsifier concentrations during our experiment frequency; and the higher is the dilational frequency, the lower is the concentration. The influences of AE-121 and SP-169 on the dilational viscoelastic properties of the oil-water interface containing surface-active fraction from Iranian crude oil have been measured. The results clearly stated that both demulsifiers could obviously decrease the dilational elasticity of oil-water interface containing surface-active fraction. At low concentration, because of stronger adsorption ability, SP-169 has stronger ability to decreasing the dilational modulus than AE-121. We also found that the dilational modulus of the interface contained surface-active fraction passed through a minimum value with increasing demulsifier concentration for both demulsifiers. This result indicated the dosage of demulsifier had an optimum value. The results obtained by means of interfacial tension relaxation method showed that the slow relaxation processes involve mainly rearrangement in the conformation of the molecules appeared with increasing demulsifier concentration.

Control over the wettability of an aligned carbon nanotube film.

Three-dimensional anisotropic aligned carbon nanotube microstructures were constructed by the chemical vapor deposition method on silicon templates with well-defined structure. It brought about new properties of wettability. Superhydrophobic (contact angle > 150 degrees ) and very hydrophilic (contact angle < 30 degrees ) properties can both be achieved by a simple change of structural parameter.

Influence of demulsifiers of different structures on interfacial dilational properties of an oil-water interface containing surface-active fractions from crude oil.

The influences of two commercial demulsifiers that have a straight chain and branch chain, respectively, on the dilational viscoelasticity of an oil-water interfacial film containing surface-active fractions from crude oil were investigated. The branch-chain demulsifier AE-121 could efficiently substitute surface-active fractions of different average molecular weights from the oil-water interface, while straight-chain SP-169 could only efficiently substitute those of large average molecular weight. It was apt to form a mix-adsorption layer with surface-active fractions of small average molecular weight. The results showed that the molecular size (or represented by average molecular weights) of the surface-active fractions was an important factor influencing the reciprocity of demulsifiers and surface-active fractions at the oil-water interface. This effect could be well explained by the difference between sizes of surface-active fraction molecules and vacancies between demulsifier molecules at the interface. The results of SDBS also proved this explanation.
