Selective extraction and purification of endohedral metallofullerene from carbon soot.

A preferential extraction of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) from carbon soot through the use of reduction in the extraction process and a convenient isolation of endohedral metallofullerene anions (EMFs(-)) and empty fullerenes utilizing their difference in solubility are accomplished. EMFs are easily isolated by one-stage high-performance liquid chromatography after chemical oxidation of the extracted endohedral EMFs(-).

The Bingel monoadducts of La@C82: synthesis, characterization, and electrochemistry.

The reaction of La@C82 with diethyl bromomalonate in the presence of base (the Bingel reaction) generated five monoadducts which have been fully characterized. It was found that four of them (mono-A, -B, -C, and -D) are ESR-inactive, suggesting singly bonded regioisomers. In contrast, the fifth product (mono-E) is ESR-active, indicating that it possesses a cyclic moiety between the appended malonate group and the fullerene cage, analogous to conventional Bingel adducts. The differences in the molecular structures of mono-A, -B, -C, and -E result in varying thermal stabilities and electrochemical behavior. In particular, the singly bonded monoadducts undergo the retro-Bingel reaction either under thermal treatment or during electron transfer on the cyclic voltammetric timescale. However, mono-E shows remarkable thermal stability and perfect reversibility under the same experimental conditions.

g-Anisotropy of the S2-state manganese cluster in single crystals of cyanobacterial photosystem II studied by W-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The multiline signal from the S2-state manganese cluster in the oxygen evolving complex of photosystem II (PSII) was observed in single crystals of a thermophilic cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus vulcanus for the first time by W-band (94 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). At W-band, spectra were characterized by the g-anisotropy, which enabled the precise determination of the tensor. Distinct hyperfine splittings (hfs's) as seen in frozen solutions of PSII at X-band (9.5 GHz) were detected in most of the crystal orientations relative to the magnetic field. In some orientations, however, the hfs's disappeared due to overlapping of a large number of EPR lines from eight crystallographic symmetry-related sites of the manganese cluster within the unit cell of the crystal. Analysis of the orientation-dependent spectral features yielded the following g-tensor components: g(x) = 1.988, g(y) = 1.981, g(z) = 1.965. The principal values suggested an approximate axial symmetry around the Mn(III) ion in the cluster.

Host-guest complexation of endohedral metallofullerene with azacrown ether and its application.

Complexation of endohedral metallofullerene La@C(82)-A (1) with macrocyclic compounds, such as 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane (2), 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexamethyl-1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane (3), mono-aza-18-crown-6 ether (4), 18-crown-6 ether (5), and p-tert-butylcalix[n]arenes (n = 4-8, 6-10), for the first time is examined. Among them, 1 forms a complex with azacrown ethers 2-4 while accompanying the electron transfer between them. This is characteristic of endohedral metallofullerene and caused by its low reduction potential. Activation energies, DeltaG(et), for the electron transfer from 2-4 to 1 are 4.6, 2.8, and 11 kcal/mol, respectively. These small DeltaG(et) values indicate that the electron transfer from the azacrown ethers to 1 is facile in the ground state. Furthermore, the selective isolation of lanthanum endohedral metallofullerenes from the extracts of soot is accomplished by utilizing the complexation of 1 with 2.

High-spin radical cations of a dendritic oligoarylamine.

A new dendritic oligoarylamine, N,N,N',N',N",N"-hexakis[4-(di-4-anisylamino)phenyl]- 1,3,5-benzenetriamine (BTA) 2, which contains a 1,3,5-benzenetriamine molecular unit as an potential precursor of a high-spin molecule and three oligoarylamine moieties as spin-carrying units surrounding the core BTA, has been prepared by the sequential palladium-catalyzed amination reactions. The redox property has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, and the highly charged states up to the hexacation are accessible to 2. The polycationic high-spin species have been generated by stepwise chemical oxidation, and the electronic structures have been examined in detail by the continuous wave (CW) and pulsed ESR spectroscopy in comparison with the previously studied 1. The pulsed ESR technique enabled us to determine the definite spin multiplicity of the generated polycationic species of 2. It was confirmed that the dominant oxidized species observed by the two- and three-electron oxidations were assigned to the spin triplet 2(2+) and the spin quartet 2(3+), respectively. Moreover, these high-spin polycationic species turned out to be far more stable as compared to 1, and the isolation of 2(3+) as the SbCl(6)(-) salt has been accomplished. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility for the 2(3+)(SbCl(6)(-))(3) salt revealed that the intramolecular ferromagnetic interaction exists in 2(3+), and moreover, the trication 2(3+) was found to be deformed in the solid state.

Triradical cation of p-phenylenediamine having two nitroxide radical groups: spin alignment mediated by delocalized spin.

The cationic state of a p-phenylenediamine (PDA) molecule having two nitroxide radical groups was prepared and characterized using electrochemical, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic, and absorption spectroscopic methods. The delocalized intervalence state of the p-phenylendiamine (PDA) moiety was detected in the cationic state. From the pulsed ESR measurements, it was confirmed that the delocalized spin induces parallel spin alignment between the localized two nitroxide groups which are magnetically weakly coupled in the neutral state. It was found that the resulting high-spin alignment does not seriously affect the delocalized intervalence state of the PDA radical cation.

A singly bonded derivative of endohedral metallofullerene: La@C82CBr(COOC2H5).

A novel Bingel monoadduct of La@C82 (mono-A) has been synthesized by the reaction with diethyl bromomalonate in the presence of DBU (Bingel-Hirsch reaction). Its structure has been fully determined by NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic analyses. The most distinct feature of mono-A is the single bond moiety between the functional group and fullerene cage, which is very different from the cyclopropane moiety in a conventional Bingel adduct of empty fullerenes. Further spectroscopic characterizations and calculations revealed the closed-shell structure of mono-A. Its formation mechanism was discussed according to calculation results.

Evidence for de Vries structure in a smectic-A liquid crystal observed by polarized Raman scattering.

The second- and fourth-order apparent orientational order parameters of the core part of the molecule P2 (app) and P4 (app) , have been measured by polarized vibrational Raman spectroscopy for a homogeneously aligned ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal with three dimethyl siloxane groups in the achiral terminal chain, which shows de Vries-type phenomena, i.e., very large electroclinic effect in the smectic- A (Sm-A) phase and a negligible layer contraction at the phase transition between the Sm-A and Sm- C(*) phases. The apparent orientational order parameters of the rigid core part of the molecule are extremely small both with and without the external electric field in Sm-A . These results provide evidence for the existence of the de Vries Sm-A phase, where the local molecular director is tilted at a large angle.

Synthesis and characterization of exohedrally silylated M@C82 (M = Y and La).

The silylation of endohedral mono-metallofullerenes (Y@C(82) and La@C(82)) and isolation of the corresponding adducts by HPLC separation have been accomplished. The redox properties of the silylated mono-metallofullerene were first clarified by CV and DPV measurements, indicating that the bis-silylated mono-metallofullerenes have lower oxidation and higher reduction potentials than the parent mono-metallofullerenes. These results reveal that bis-silylation is very effective for producing the electronegatively mono-metallofullerene derivatives as well as empty fullerenes.

Activation process of [NiFe] hydrogenase elucidated by high-resolution X-ray analyses: conversion of the ready to the unready state.

Hydrogenases catalyze oxidoreduction of molecular hydrogen and have potential applications for utilizing dihydrogen as an energy source. [NiFe] hydrogenase has two different oxidized states, Ni-A (unready, exhibits a lag phase in reductive activation) and Ni-B (ready). We have succeeded in converting Ni-B to Ni-A with the use of Na2S and O2 and determining the high-resolution crystal structures of both states. Ni-B possesses a monatomic nonprotein bridging ligand at the Ni-Fe active site, whereas Ni-A has a diatomic species. The terminal atom of the bridging species of Ni-A occupies a similar position as C of the exogenous CO in the CO complex (inhibited state). The common features of the enzyme structures at the unready (Ni-A) and inhibited (CO complex) states are proposed. These findings provide useful information on the design of new systems of biomimetic dihydrogen production and fuel cell devices.
