Dynamics below the depinning threshold in disordered elastic systems.

We study the steady-state low-temperature dynamics of an elastic line in a disordered medium below the depinning threshold. Analogously to the equilibrium dynamics, in the limit T-->0, the steady state is dominated by a single configuration which is occupied with probability 1. We develop an exact algorithm to target this dominant configuration and to analyze its geometrical properties as a function of the driving force. The roughness exponent of the line at large scales is identical to the one at depinning. No length scale diverges in the steady-state regime as the depinning threshold is approached from below. We do find a divergent length, but it is associated only with the transient relaxation between metastable states.

Dynamic compressibility and aging in Wigner crystals and quantum glasses.

We study the nonequilibrium linear response of quantum elastic systems pinned by quenched disorder with Schwinger-Keldysh real-time techniques complemented by a mean-field variational approach. We find (i) a quasiequilibrium regime in which the analytic continuation from the imaginary-time replica results holds provided the marginality condition is enforced, and (ii) an aging regime. The conductivity and compressibility are computed. The latter is found to cross over from its dynamic to static value on a scale set by the waiting time after a quench, an effect which can be probed in experiments in, e.g., Wigner glasses.

Nonequilibrium relaxation of an elastic string in a random potential.

We study the nonequilibrium motion of an elastic string in a two dimensional pinning landscape using Langevin dynamics simulations. The relaxation of a line, initially flat, is characterized by a growing length L(t) separating the equilibrated short length scales from the flat long distance geometry that keeps a memory of the initial condition. We show that, in the long time limit, L(t) has a nonalgebraic growth with a universal distribution function. The distribution function of waiting times is also calculated, and related to the previous distribution. The barrier distribution is narrow enough to justify arguments based on scaling of the typical barrier.

Creep motion of an elastic string in a random potential.

We study the creep motion of an elastic string in a two-dimensional pinning landscape by means of Langevin dynamics simulations. We find that the velocity-force characteristics are well described by the creep formula predicted from phenomenological scaling arguments. We analyze the creep exponent mu and the roughness exponent zeta. Two regimes are identified: when the temperature is larger than the strength of the disorder, we find mu approximately 1/4 and zeta approximately 2/3, in agreement with the quasi-equilibrium-nucleation picture of creep motion; on the contrary, when lowering the temperature enough, the values of mu and zeta increase, showing a strong violation of the latter picture.

Scanning-tunneling spectroscopy of surface-state electrons scattered by a slightly disordered two-dimensional dilute "solid": Ce on Ag(111).

Low temperature (3.9 K) scanning-tunneling spectroscopy on a hexagonal superlattice of Ce adatoms on Ag(111) reveals site-dependent characteristic features in differential conductance spectra and in spectroscopic images at atomic-scale spatial resolution. Using a tight-binding model, we relate the overall spectral structures to the scattering of Ag(111) surface-state electrons by the Ce adatoms, the site dependence to the disorder induced by imperfections of the superlattice, and the opening of a gap in the local density of states to the observed stabilization of superlattices with adatom distances in the range of 2.3-3.5 nm.

Specific heat of classical disordered elastic systems.

We study the thermodynamics of disordered elastic systems, applied to vortex lattices in the Bragg glass phase. Using the replica variational method we compute the specific heat of pinned vortons in the classical limit. We find that the contribution of disorder is positive, linear at low temperature, and exhibits a maximum. It is found to be important compared to other contributions, e.g., core electrons, mean field, and nonlinear elasticity that we evaluate. The contribution of droplets is subdominant at weak disorder in d=3.

Variable-range hopping and quantum creep in one dimension.

We study the quantum nonlinear response to an applied electric field E of a one-dimensional pinned charge-density wave or Luttinger liquid in the presence of disorder. From an explicit construction of low-lying metastable states and of bounce instanton solutions between them, we demonstrate quantum creep v=e(-c/E(1/2)) as well as a sharp crossover at E=E(*) towards a linear response form consistent with variable-range hopping arguments, but dependent only on electronic degrees of freedom.
