Novel mu5-coordination modes of aryl and alkyl ethynides and classification of metal-ligand interactions in silver(I) complexes.

Novel mu(5)-eta(1),eta(1),eta(1),eta(1),eta(2) and mu(5)-eta(1),eta(1),eta(1),eta(2),eta(2) coordination modes of alkyl and aryl ethynide moieties are found in silver(I) complexes 1-5, and the metal-ligand distances can be classified into sigma, pi and mixed (sigma,pi) types. With the consistent square-pyramidal capping Ag(5) baskets of the ethynide moiety as supramolecular synthons, a series of two- and three-dimensional coordination networks are obtained.

Polyhedral C2@Agn cages distorted by ancillary pyridine N-oxide ligands in silver-acetylenediide complexes.

Reactions of the pyridine N-oxide ligands L, L2 and L3 with the silver acetylenediide-containing system under hydrothermal conditions gave rise to four silver-acetylenediide complexes bearing interesting C2@Agn motifs: (Ag2C2)2(AgCF3CO2)8(L1)3.5 (1), (Ag2C2)2(AgCF3CO2)8(L2)2 (2), (Ag2C2)(AgCF3CO2)4(L3) (3) and [(Ag7(C2)(CF3SO3)3(L3)2(H2O)2] x 2CF3SO3 (4) (L = nicotinic acid N-oxide, L(1) = pyridine N-oxide, L2 = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane N,N'-dioxide, L3 = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane N,N'-dioxide), which exhibit new distorted polyhedral C2@Agn cage motifs. Complex 1 has a pair of acetylenediide dianions encapsulated in a Ag(14) aggregate composed of three polyhedral parts, whereas 2 contains an irregular (C2)2@Ag13 double cage. In 3, the basic building unit is a centrosymmetric (C2)2@Ag12 double cage with each component single cage taking the shape of a highly distorted triangulated dodecahedron with one missing vertex. As to complex 4, the core is a C2@Ag7 single cage in the form of a slightly distorted monocapped trigonal prism with four cleaved edges that include all three vertical sides. Furthermore, in the silver-rich environment, the pyO-type ligands are induced to exhibit unprecedented coordination modes, such as the mu(5)-O,O,O,O',O' ligation mode of L2 in 2 and the mu4-O,O,O',O' mode of L3 in 3 and 4.

Synthesis, structure and dioxygen reactivity of a bis(micro-iodo)dicopper(I) complex supported by the [N-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N-di-(2-pyridylmethyl)]amine ligand.

The air-sensitive bis(micro-iodo)dicopper(I) complex 1 supported by [N-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N-di-(2-pyridylmethyl)]amine (L) has been prepared by treating copper(I) iodide with L in anhydrous THF. Compound 1 crystallizes as a dimer in space group C2/c. Each copper(I) center has distorted tetrahedral N2I2 coordination geometry with Cu-N(pyridyl) distances 2.061(3) and 2.063(3) A, Cu-I distances 2.6162(5) and 2.7817(5) and a Cu...Cu distance of 2.9086(8) A. Complex 1 is rapidly oxidized by dioxygen in CH2Cl2 with a 1 : 1 stoichiometry giving the bis(micro-iodo)peroxodicopper(II) complex [Cu(L)(micro-I)]2O2 (2). The reaction of 1 with dioxygen has been characterized by UV-vis, mass spectrometry, EPR and Cu K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy at low temperature (193 K) and above. The mass spectrometry and low temperature EPR measurements suggested an equilibrium between the bis(micro-iodo)peroxodicopper(II) complex 2 and its dimer, namely, the tetranuclear (peroxodicopper(II))2 complex [Cu(L)(micro-I)]4O4 (2'). Complex 2 undergoes an effective oxo-transfer reaction converting PPh3 into O=PPh3 under anaerobic conditions. At sufficiently high concentration of PPh3, the oxygen atom transfer from 2 to PPh3 was followed by the formation of [Cu(PPh3)3I]. The dioxygen reactivity of 1 was compared with that known for other halo(amine)copper(I) dimers.

Assembly of polymeric silver(I) complexes of isomeric phenylenediethynides with the supramolecular synthons Agn subset C2-R-C2 superset Agn (R = p-, m-, o-C6H4; n = 4, 5).

New Agn subset C2-R-C2 supersetAgn (R = p-, m-, o-C6H4; n = 4, 5) supramolecular synthons have been explored in the coordination network assembly of silver(I) complexes of the isomeric phenylenediethynides. An unprecedented mu5-eta1-coordination mode for the ethynide moiety and a mixed mu4,mu5-coordination mode for the o-phenylenediethynide group are observed, providing a rationale for the abundant occurrence of C2@Agn (n </= 10) polyhedral cages in double and multiple salts of silver acetylenediide.

Synthesis of a manganese germavinylidene complex from bis(germavinylidene).

The reaction of bis(germavinylidene) [(Me3SiN=PPh2)2C=Ge-->Ge=C(PPh2=NSiMe3)2] (1) with CpMn(CO)2(THF) (Cp = eta5-C5H5) in THF afforded [(Me3SiN=PPh2)2C=Ge-->Mn(CO)2Cp] (2). Similar reaction of 1 with (cod)RhCl (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) in THF gave [(Me3SiN=NPPh2)2{(cod)Rh}C-GeCl] (3). The results suggested that reactive germavinylidene may exist in solution. The X-ray structures of 2 and 3 have been determined.

Single-strand helical complexes constructed from 2-pyridinyl-3-pyridinylmethanone: tuning the helical pitch length by variation of metal cation and/or counter anion.

The new ligand 2-pyridinyl-3-pyridinylmethanone (L) proves to be an excellent building block for the construction of single-strand helical architectures. A series of helical complexes have been synthesized by the reaction of L with various metal salts, in which L exhibits three kinds of coordination modes involving two kinds of bridging conformations, resulting in four types of single-strand helical chains. The counter anions in the series of 2(1) helical silver(I) complexes {[Ag(L)]X}(infinity)(X = NO(3), 1; PF(6), 2; BF(4), 3; ClO(4), 4; CF(3)CO(2), 5; CF(3)SO(3), 6) are fully or partially embedded inside the cylindrical helix, and the pitch length corresponds not only to the size of the anion but also to its manner of docking into the groove of the helix. Formation of the helical structure in {[Cu(L)(CH(3)CN)(H(2)O)(ClO(4))]ClO(4)}(infinity)(7) is driven by Ow-H...O (perchlorate) hydrogen bonding that leads to a stable triangular motif which rigidly fixes the configuration of the helix. In {[Co(L)(H(2)O)(3)](ClO(4))(2).2H(2)O}(infinity)(8) and {[Zn(L)(H(2)O)(3)](CF(3)SO(3))(2).H(2)O}(infinity)(9), similar helical chains without anion embedment suggest that the pitch length can be tuned by the size of metal cations. Notably, complex {[Ag(L)]CF(3)SO(3)}(infinity)(10), a conformational polymorph of , has a 4(1) helix induced by argentophilic interaction.

Hydrogen-bonded anionic rosette networks assembled with guanidinium and C3-symmetric oxoanion building blocks.

Two premeditated anionic rosette-layer architectures have been constructed using guanidinium and ubiquitous C3-symmetric oxoanions that carry unequal charges, employing bulky organic cations as interlayer templates. The undulate guanidinium-carbonate network occurs in 4[(C2H5)4N+].8[C(NH2)3+].3(CO3)2-.3(C2O4)2-.2H2O, in which the disordered (C2H5)4N+ guests are accommodated in pouches and channels within a complex three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded host framework. In [(C2H5)4N+]2.[C(NH2)3+].[1,3,5-C3H3(COO-)3].6H2O, ordered (C2H5)4N+ cations are sandwiched between planar guanidinium-trimesate host layers whose honeycomb cavities are tightly fitted with flattened-chair (H2O)6 clusters of symmetry 2.

Controlled generation of heterochiral or homochiral coordination polymer: helical conformational polymorphs and argentophilicity-induced spontaneous resolution.

In the pair of helical conformational polymorphs of the coordination polymer {[AgL](CF3SO3)}infinity(L=2-pyridinyl-3-pyridinylmethanone), the 2(1) helices of opposite chirality in one supramolecular isomer are stacked alternately to form a racemate, while the 4(1) helices in the other are assembled homochirally by inter-chain argentophilic interaction to generate a conglomerate.

Chiral rodlike platinum complexes, double helical chains, and potential asymmetric hydrogenation ligand based on "linear" building blocks: 1,8,9,16-tetrahydroxytetraphenylene and 1,8,9,16-tetrakis(diphenylphosphino)tetraphenylene.

This paper is concerned with the synthesis of 1,8,9,16-tetrahydroxytetraphenylene (3a) via copper(II)-mediated oxidative coupling, its resolution to optical antipodes, and its conversion to 1,8,9,16-tetrakis(diphenylphosphino)tetraphenylene (3b). On the basis of these chiral "linear" building blocks, three rodlike chiral complexes, triblock (R,R,R,R)-17 and (S,S,S,S)-20 and pentablock (R,R,R,R,R,R,R,R)-22, were constructed. As a hydrogen bond donor, racemic and optically active 3a was allowed to assemble with linear acceptors to afford highly ordered structures. A 1:1 adduct of 4,4'-bipyridyl and (+/-)-3a exists in a dimeric form of 3a linked by 4,4'-bipyridyl through hydrogen bonds. Pyrazine serves as a short linker between achiral parallel chains each formed by (+/-)-3a, while self-assembly of homochiral 3a into alternate parallel chains occurs in the adduct of 5,5'-dipyrimidine with (+/-)-3a. Self-assembly of (S,S)-3a or (R,R)-3a with 4,4'-dipyridyl yielded a packing of chiral double helical chains formed by chiral tetrol 3a molecules. A novel chiral ligand, (S,S)-23, derived from 3a was used in the asymmetric catalytic hydrogenation of alpha-acetamidocinnamate, yielding up to 99.0% ee and 100% conversion.

Betaine-induced assembly of neutral infinite columns and chains of linked silver(I) polyhedra with embedded acetylenediide.

Ten polymeric silver(I) double salts containing embedded acetylenediide: [(Ag2C2)2(AgCF3CO2)9(L1)3] (1), [(Ag2C2)2(AgCF3CO2)10(L2)3]H2O (2), [(Ag2C2)(AgCF3CO2)4(L3)(H2O)]0.75 H2O (3), [(Ag2C2)(1.5)(AgCF3CO2)7(L4)2] (4), [(Ag2C2)(AgCF3CO2)7(L5)2(H2O)] (5), [(Ag2C2) (AgC2F5CO2)7(L1)3(H2O)] (6), [(Ag2C2)(AgCF3CO2)7(L1)3(H2O)]2 H2O (7), [(Ag2C2)(AgC2F5CO2)6(L3)2] (8), [(Ag2C2)2(AgC2F5CO2)12(L4)2(H2O)4]H2O (9), and [(Ag2C2)(AgCF3CO2)6(L3)2(H2O)]H2O (10) have been isolated by varying the types of betaines, the perfluorocarboxylate ligands employed, and the reaction conditions. Single-crystal X-ray analysis has shown that 1-4 all have a columnar structure composed of fused silver(I) double cages, with C2(2-) species embedded in its stem and an exterior coat comprising anionic and zwitterionic carboxylates. For 5 and 6, single silver(I) cages are linked into a beaded chain through both types of carboxylate ligands. In 7, two different coordination modes of L1 connect the silver(I) polyhedra into a chain. For 8, the mu(2)-O,O' coordination mode of L3 connects the silver(I) double cages into a chain. Compound 9 exhibits a two-dimensional architecture generated from the cross-linkage of double cages by C2F5CO2-, L4, and [Ag2(C2F5CO2)2] units. Similar to 9, 10 is also a two-dimensional structure, which is formed by connecting the chains of linked double cages through [Ag2(CF3CO2)2] bridging.

A comparative study on aqueous root extracts of Pueraria thomsonii and Pueraria lobata by antioxidant assay and HPLC fingerprint analysis.

The roots of Pueraria thomsonii and Pueraria lobata are officially recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia under the same name Radix Puerariae. However, the aqueous root extract of Pueraria lobata showed more potent antioxidant activity than that of Pueraria thomsonii. A qualitative HPLC method was developed to compare the chemical profiles of Pueraria thomsonii and Pueraria lobata, which revealed four major common peaks (daidzein 1, daidzin 2, puerarin 3 and 5-hydroxypuerarin 4) and two major different peaks (3-hydroxypuerarin 5 and 3'-methoxypuerarin 6) in their chromatograms. Semi-quantitative analysis showed that the contents of 1-3 in Pueraria lobata are about three, three, and five times higher than those of Pueraria thomsonii, respectively. The higher contents of isoflavonoids in Pueraria lobata were inferred to be responsible for its more potent antioxidant activity as compared with that of Pueraria thomsonii. The HPLC method developed in this study and chemical markers 1-6 can be used for the rapid identification and evaluation of Radix Puerariae herbs and their aqueous supplements, and the results of this investigation support the use of Pueraria lobata and Pueraria thomsonii in the clinic application and as dietary supplement, respectively.

Chemistry and biological activities of caffeic acid derivatives from Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Caffeic acid (3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid), one of the most common phenolic acids, frequently occurs in fruits, grains and dietary supplements for human consumption as simple esters with quinic acid or saccharides, and are also found in traditional Chinese herbs. Caffeic acid derivatives occur as major water-soluble components of Salvia miltiorrhiza, including caffeic acid monomers and a wide variety of oligomers. This review provides up-to-date coverage of this class of phenolic acids in regard to structural classification, natural resources, chemical and biosyntheses, analytical methods and biological activities including antioxidant, anti-ischemia reperfusion, anti-thrombosis, anti-hypertension, anti-fibrosis, antivirus and antitumor properties. Special attention is paid to both structural classification and biological activities. The structural diversity and the pronounced biological activities encountered in the caffeic acid derivatives of S. miltiorrhiza indicate that this class of compounds is worthy of further studies that may lead to new drug discovery.

Silver cages with encapsulated acetylenediide as building blocks for hydrothermal synthesis of supramolecular complexes with n-cyanopyridine and pyridine-n-carboxamide (n=3, 4).

New silver(i) double salts (Ag(2)C(2))(AgCF(3)CO(2))(8)(3-pyCONH(2))(2)(H(2)O)(4) (1), [(Ag(2)C(2))(AgCF(3)CO(2))(4)(4-pyCONH(2))(H(2)O)].H(2)O (2), (Ag(2)C(2))(AgCF(3)CO(2))(6)(3-pyCONH(2))(4) (3), (Ag(2)C(2))(AgCF(3)CO(2))(6)(3-pyCN)(2) (4) and (Ag(2)C(2))(AgCF(3)CO(2))(4)(4-pyCN)(2) (5) (n-pyCONH(2) is pyridine-n-carboxamide, n-pyCN is n-cyanopyridine; n=3, 4) have been synthesized by the hydrothermal method. All five compounds contain polyhedral silver(i) cages each encapsulating a C(2)(2-) dianion. Compounds 1, 3 ,4 and 5 exhibit three-dimensional structures, whereas compound 2 is a two-dimensional network. The structure of 1 is constructed from the linkage of a branched-tree architecture via hydrogen bonds. Unlike 4 and 5, which involve the connection of n-cyanopyridine (n=3, 4) with silver columns, 3 results from the linkage of discrete silver cages via pyridine-3-carboxamide.

Silver(I) 1,3-butadiynediide and two related silver(I) double salts containing the C4(2-) dianion.

Ag2C4, the second silver carbide to be fully characterized, has been synthesized as a light-gray powder (contaminated with metallic silver) that is explosive at high temperature (130 degrees C) and sensitive to mechanical shock, rather like the well-known prototype Ag2C2. In the pair of hydrated double salts Ag2C4.6AgNO3.nH2O (n = 2, 3), the nearly linear, centrosymmetric 1,3-butadiyne-1,4-diyl dianion C42-exhibits an unprecedented mu8-coordination mode, each terminal being capped by four sigma-bonded silver(I) atoms with pi-interaction to one of them.

Iridium(III) complexes formed by O-H and/Or C-H activation of 2-(arylazo)phenols.

Reaction of 2-(arylazo)phenols with [Ir(PPh(3))(3)Cl] in refluxing ethanol in the presence of a base (NEt(3)) affords complexes of three different types, viz. [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(NO-R)(H)Cl] (R = OCH(3), CH(3), H, Cl and NO(2)), [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(NO-R)(H)(2)] and [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(CNO-R)(H)]. Structures of the [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(NO-Cl)(H)Cl], [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(NO-Cl)(H)(2)] and [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(CNO-Cl)(H)] complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In the [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(NO-R)(H)Cl] and [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(NO-R)(H)(2)] complexes, the 2-(arylazo)phenolate ligands are coordinated to the metal center as monoanionic bidentate N,O-donors, whereas in the [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(CNO-R)(H)] complexes, they are coordinated to iridium as dianionic tridentate C,N,O-donors. In all three products formed in ethanol, the two PPh(3) ligands are trans. Reaction of 2-(arylazo)phenols with [Ir(PPh(3))(3)Cl] in refluxing toluene in the presence of NEt(3) affords complexes of two types, viz. [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(CNO-R)(H)] and [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(CNO-R)Cl]. Structure of the [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(CNO-Cl)Cl] complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography, and the 2-(arylazo)phenolate ligand is coordinated to the metal center as a dianionic tridentate C,N,O-donor and the two PPh(3) ligands are cis. All of the iridium(III) complexes show intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. Cyclic voltammetry shows an Ir(III)-Ir(IV) oxidation on the positive side of SCE and an Ir(III)-Ir(II) reduction on the negative side for all of the products.
