Five-coordinate Pd(II) orthometallated triarylphosphite complexes.

The reaction of the orthopalladated triarylphosphite complexes [{Pd(mu-Cl){kappa(2)-P,C-P(OC(6)H(2)-2,4-R(2))(OC(6)H(3)-2,4-R(2))}(2)] (R = H, (t)Bu) with bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)phenylphosphine leads to a five-coordinate palladium(II) (R = H) and a mixture containing four-and five-coordinate species (R = (t)Bu). The crystal structure of the five-coordinate species [Pd{kappa(2)-P,C-(P(OC(6)H(4))(OC(6)H(5))(2)}{bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)phenylphosphine}][SbF(6)] is presented. This complex reacts with hydrogen peroxide or [AuCl(tht)] to give four-coordinate complexes in which the displaced phosphine residue is either oxidised or coordinated to gold chloride; this demonstrates that the five-coordinate complexes are labile in solution. By contrast, the reactions of the dimeric precursors with 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane give four-coordinate complexes in the solid state, although evidence is presented that the smaller phosphite-containing system is five-coordinate at room temperature or higher in solution.

Multifunctional redox catalysts as selective enhancers of oxidative stress.

Certain cancer cells proliferate under conditions of oxidative stress (OS) and might therefore be selectively targeted by redox catalysts. Among these catalysts, compounds containing a chalcogen and a quinone redox centre are particularly well suited to respond to the presence of OS. These catalysts combine the specific electrochemical features of quinones and chalcogens. They exhibit high selectivity and efficiency against oxidatively stressed rat PC12, human Jurkat and human Daudi cells in cell culture, where their mode of action most likely involves the catalytic activation of existent and the generation of new reactive oxygen species. The high efficiency and selectivity shown by these catalysts makes them interesting for the development of anti-cancer drugs.

The reactivity of cyclo-(P5tBu4)- towards group 13, 14 and 15 metal chlorides: complexation and formation of cyclooligophosphanes, [cyclo-(P5tBu4)]2 and [cyclo-(P4tBu3)PtBu]2, by reductive elimination.

[Na(THF)4][cyclo-(P5tBu4)] (1) reacts with Et2AlCl and GeCl4 to give Et2Al[cyclo-(P5tBu4)](THF) (2) and, in low yield, GeCl3[cyclo-(P5tBu4)], respectively, while the reaction of 1 with SnCl2, PbCl2 or BiCl3 results in the formation of the structural isomers [cyclo-(P5tBu4)]2 (3) and [cyclo-(P4tBu3)PtBu]2 (4)(besides other cyclic phosphanes) and elemental metal.

Self-assembly sodalite-like framework.

The dense packing of shape complementary N-donor molecules dominates the self-assembly of coordination polymers possessing sodalite-like topology and supports nanosize molecular cages.
