Molecular and electronic structure of square planar complexes [PdII(tbpy)(L N,O IP)]0, [PdII(tbpy)(LN,O ISQ)](PF6), and [PdII(tbpy)(L N,O IBQ)](PF6)(BF4).2CH2Cl2: an o-iminophenolato based ligand centered, three-membered redox series.

Three Pd(II) complexes which are members of the same electron-transfer series have been synthesized. Refluxing of the reaction mixture containing equimolar amounts of PdCl(2), 2-(2-trifluoromethyl)anilino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol (H(2)L(N,O)), 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl ((t)bpy), and 3 equiv of triethylamine in MeOH under an argon atmosphere followed by exposure to air and addition of KPF(6) after cooling to room temperature yields reddish brown crystals of paramagnetic (S = 1/2) [Pd(L(N,O)(ISQ))((t)bpy)](PF6) (2). Reaction of 2 with one equiv of [CoCp2] in dry and degassed CH(2)Cl(2) using anaerobic conditions gives diamagnetic [Pd(L(N,O)(IP))((t)bpy)] (1), which is the one-electron reduced form of 2. One-electron oxidation of 2 in CH(2)Cl(2) under argon with one equiv of NOBF4 affords diamagnetic [Pd(L(N,O)(IBQ))((t)bpy)](PF6)(BF4).2CH(2)Cl(2) (3). Complexes 1, 2, and 3 constitute three members of the same electron-transfer series. They are ideally suited to distinctly distinguish the geometrical and spectroscopic features of the N,O-coordinated, closed-shell, diamagnetic o-iminophenolate (L(N,O)(IP))2-, the corresponding open-shell pi-radical o-iminobenzosemiquinonate (L(N,O)(ISQ))1-.(S(rad) = 1/2), and the closed-shell o-iminobenzoquinone (L(N,O)(IBQ))0 forms. All complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography (100 K), cyclic voltammetry, EPR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Complex 2 exhibits three reversible electron transfer waves in the cyclic voltammogram. Structural characterization of complex 3 reveals an interesting strong ion pairing between the BF4 anion and the complex dication with a short C-F distance of 2.7 A.

A spin-frustrated star-shaped heterotetranuclear CrIIIMnII3 species and its magnetic and HF-EPR measurements.

A tetranuclear complex [Cr(III)Mn(II)(3)(PyA)(6)Cl(3)] 1 containing pyridine-2-aldoximato monoanion, PyA, has been structurally and magnetochemically characterized. The compound is a rare example of a tetranuclear star-shaped metal topology containing pyridine-2-aldoximato ligands. Static magnetic studies have demonstrated very weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the paramagnetic centers (S(Cr) = 3/2 and S(Mn) = 5/2) resulting in closely spaced low-lying levels, which undergo splitting and crossing. Preliminary high-field EPR measurements (20 < nu < 388 GHz) indicate the presence of zero-field splitting D of the order of 0.7 cm(-1).

Electronic structure of mononuclear bis(1,2-diaryl-1,2-ethylenedithiolato)iron complexes containing a fifth cyanide or phosphite ligand: a combined experimental and computational study.

A series of mononuclear square-based pyramidal complexes of iron containing two 1,2-diaryl-ethylene-1,2-dithiolate ligands in various oxidation levels has been synthesized. The reaction of the dinuclear species [Fe(III)2(1L*)2(1L)2]0, where (1L)2- is the closed shell di-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,2-ethylenedithiolate dianion and (1L*)1- is its one-electron-oxidized pi-radical monoanion, with [N(n-Bu)4]CN in toluene yields dark green crystals of mononuclear [N(n-Bu)4][Fe(II)(1L*)2(CN)] (1). The oxidation of 1 with ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate yields blue [Fe(III)(1L*)2(CN)] (1ox), and analogously, a reduction with [Cp2Co] yields [Cp2Co][N(n-Bu)4][Fe(II)(1L*)(1L)(CN)] (1red); oxidation of the neutral dimer with iodine gives [Fe(III)(1L*)2I] (2). The dimer reacts with the phosphite P(OCH3)3 to yield [Fe(II)(1L*)2{P(OCH3)3}] (3), and [Fe(III)2(3L*)2(3L)2] reacts with P(OC6H5)3 to give [Fe(II)(3L*)2{P(OC6H5)3}] (4), where (3L)2- represents 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-ethylenedithiolate(2-). Both 3 and 4 were electrochemically one-electron oxidized to the monocations 3ox and 4ox and reduced to the monoanions 3red and 4red. The structures of 1 and 4 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. All compounds have been studied by magnetic susceptibility measurements, X-band EPR, UV-vis, IR, and Mössbauer spectroscopies. The following five-coordinate chromophores have been identified: (a) [Fe(III)(L*)2X]n, X = CN-, I- (n = 0) (1ox, 2); X = P(OR)3 (n = 1+) )3ox, 4ox) with St = 1/2, SFe = 3/2; (b) [Fe(II)(L*)2X]n, X = CN-, (n = 1-) (1); X = P(OR)3 (n = 0) (3, 4) with St = SFe = 0; (c) [Fe(II)(L*)(L)X]n <--> [Fe(II)(L)(L*)X]n, X = CN- (n = 2-) (1red); X = P(OR)3 (n = 1-) (3red, 4red) with St = 1/2, SFe = 0 (or 1). Complex 1ox displays spin crossover behavior: St = 1/2 <--> St = 3/2 with intrinsic spin-state change SFe = 3/2 <--> SFe = 5/2. The electronic structures of 1 and 1(ox) have been established by density functional theoretical calculations: [Fe(II)(1L*)2(CN)]1- (SFe = 0, St = 0) and [Fe(III)(1L*)2(CN)]0 (SFe = 3/2, St = 1/2).

Ferromagnetic vs. antiferromagnetic coupling in bis(mu2-1,1-azido)dinickel(II) complexes with syn- and anti-conformations of the end-on azide bridges.

Reaction of a 1 : 1 : 1 molar ratio of NiCl(2), NaN(3) and H(2)L, a tetradentate ligand N-(2-pyridyl)methyl)-N,N-bis(2'-hydroxy-3',5'-dimethylbenzyl)amine in methanol in presence of Et(3)N results in a turquoise precipitate, which affords deep green crystals of [Ni(2)(HL)(2)(N(3))(2)]*1.5CH(2)Cl(2) (1) and [Ni(2)(HL)(2)(N(3))(2)]*H(2)O (2) upon crystallization from CH(2)Cl(2)-MeOH or THF-MeOH, respectively. Both complexes reveal distorted octahedral NiN(4)O(2) coordination environments around the Ni(ii) centers with bis(micro-1,1-azido) bridging ligands. Complex 1 displays an unprecedented small Ni-N-Ni bridge angle of 90.4 degrees , whereas 2 contains the said angle of av. 98.7 degrees lying in the usual range observed for other comparable structures. The variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility together with the variable-field, variable-temperature (VTVH) magnetization measurements discern different ground states of S(t) = 0 for 1 and S(t) = 2 for 2. The magnetic behaviours of these compounds are discussed in the context of the known bis(end-on azido) bridging dinickel(II) complexes.

Formation of a solubilized cobalt block oligomer from a M2L-type double helicate.

The multi-dentate ligand, 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2,2'-bipyridyl)pyrazine (L) and divalent cobalt self-assemble to a block co-polymer-like oligomer in solution, which contains at least the L(7)Co(8) fragment. The extent of oligomerization is sensitive to the water content in acetonitrile solution. In the solid state, the simple monomer [LCo(2)(CH(3)CN)(4)][ClO(4)](4) is isolated. The X-ray structure of the crystallized material (containing four CH(3)CN solvate molecules) reveals a double-helical complex with two heptadentate Co(II) sites, and a helical pitch of approximately 28.1 A. Coupled Co(I/II) redox processes are observed between the two metal centres.

Molecular and electronic structures of tetrahedral complexes of nickel and cobalt containing N,N'-disubstituted, bulky o-diiminobenzosemiquinonate(1-) pi-radical ligands.

The reaction of 2 equiv of the bulky ligand N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-1,2-phenylenediamine, H2[3L(PDI)], excess triethylamine, and 1 equiv of M(CH3CO2)2.4H2O (M = Ni, Co) in the presence of air in CH3CN/CH2Cl2 solution yields violet-black crystals of [Ni(II)(3L(ISQ))2] CH3CN (1) or violet crystals of [Co(3L)2] (3). By using Pd(CH3CO2)2 as starting material, green-blue crystals of [Pd(II)(3L(ISQ))2].CH3CN (2) were obtained. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography revealed that 1 and 3 contain (pseudo)tetrahedral neutral molecules [M(3L)2] (M = Ni, Co) whereas in 2 nearly square planar, neutral molecules [Pd(II)(3L(ISQ))2] are present. Temperature-dependent susceptibility measurements established that 1 and 2 are diamagnetic (S = 0) whereas 3 is paramagnetic with an S = 3/2 ground state. It is shown that 1 contains two pi radical benzosemiquinonate(1-)-type monoanions, ((3L(ISQ))(1-*), S(rad) = 1/2), and a central Ni(II) ion (d8; S = 1) which are antiferromagnetically coupled yielding the observed S(t) = 0 ground state. This result has been confirmed by broken symmetry DFT calculations of 1. In contrast, the S(t) = 3/2 ground state of 3 is more difficult to understand: the two resonance structures [Co(III)(3L(ISQ))(3L(PDI))] <--> [Co(II)(3L(PDI))(3L(IBQ))] might be invoked (for tetrahedral [Co(II)(3L(ISQ))2] containing an S(Co) = 3/2 with two antiferromagnetically coupled pi-radical ligands an S(t) = 1/2 is anticipated). Complex 2 is diamagnetic (S = 0) containing a Pd(II) ion (d8, S(Pd) = 0 in an almost square planar ligand field) and two antiferromagnetically coupled ligand radicals (S(rad) = 1/2). The electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry of 1, 2, and 3 have been studied, and electron-transfer series comprising the species [M(L)2]z (z = 2+, 1+, 0, 1-, 2-) have been established. All oxidations and reductions are ligand centered.

Dinuclear Bis(1,2-diaryl-1,2-ethylenedithiolato)iron complexes: [FeIII2(L)4]n (n = 2-, 1-, 0, 1+).

The electronic structures of four members of the electron-transfer series [Fe2(1L)4]n (n = 2-, 1-, 0, 1+) have been elucidated in some detail by electronic absorption, IR, X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and Mössbauer spectroscopies where (1L)(2-) represents the ligand 1,2-bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,2-ethylenedithiolate(2-) and (1L*)- is its pi-radical monoanion. It is conclusively shown that all redox processes are ligand-centered and that high-valent iron(IV) is not accessible. The following complexes have been synthesized: [FeIII2(1L*)2(1L)2]0 (1), [FeIII2(2L*)2(2L)2].2CH2Cl2 (1') where (2L)(2-) is 1,2-bis(p-tolyl)-1,2-ethylenedithiolate(2-) and (2L*)- represents its pi-radical monoanion, [Cp2Co][FeIII2(1L*))(1L)3].4(toluene).0.5Et2O (2), and [Cp2Co]2[FeIII2(1L)4].2(toluene) (3). The crystal structures of 1' and 2 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography at 100 K. The ground states of complexes have been determined by temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements and EPR spectroscopy: 1' and 1 are diamagnetic (S(t) = 0); 2 (S(t) = 1/2); 3 (S(t) = 0); the monocation [Fe(III)2(1L*)3(1L)]+ possesses an S(t) = 1/2 ground state (S(t) = total spin ground state of dinuclear species). All species contain pairs of intermediate-spin ferric ions (S(Fe) = 3/2), which are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled (H = -2JS(1).S(2), where S1 = S2 = 3/2 and J = approximately -250 cm(-1)).

Deliberate synthesis for magnetostructural study of linear tetranuclear complexes BIIIMnIIMnIIBIII, MnIIIMnIIMnIIMnIII, MnIVMnIIMnIIMnIV, FeIIIMnIIMnIIFeIII, and CrIIIMnIIMnIICrIII. Influence of terminal ions on the exchange coupling.

As part of an ongoing effort to deliberate synthesis of polynuclear heterometal complexes, we are exploring synthetic routes to high-nuclearity complexes using "metal oximates" as building blocks. Series of tetranuclear linear complex ions of the general types M(A)M(B)M(B)M(A), where M(A) is a trivalent or tetravalent metal ion and M(B) is a divalent metal ion, e.g., Mn(II), have been synthesized by using the dimetal(II) anionic cores, [(M(II)(B))(2)(dfmp)(3)](5)(-) as a bridging ligand for the terminal LM(A) fragments where H(3)dfmp is a dinucleating phenol-oxime ligand, 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol oxime, and L denotes a facially coordinating cyclic tridentate amine, 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane. The following combinations are reported here, B(III)Mn(II)Mn(II)B(III) (1), Mn(III)Mn(II)Mn(II)Mn(III) (2), Mn(IV)Mn(II)Mn(II)Mn(IV) (3), Fe(III)Mn(II)Mn(II)Fe(III) (4), and Cr(III)Mn(II)Mn(II)Cr(III) (5). The compounds have been characterized spectroscopically and by magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 2.0-290 K at different field strengths. Complexes 1-4 have also been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques at 100 K. The magnetic behaviors of the compounds indicate weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the manganese(II) centers in the central trisphenoxo-bridged dimanganese(II) core, whereas the coupling between the terminal M(A) and its neighboring Mn(II) center varies and is weak ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. The relative interaction intensity in such a series of complexes is discussed. Finally, a profound influence of the charge on the terminal metal ions on the strength of the exchange coupling in the central dimanganese(II) core has been observed and discussed in relation to the covalency of the metal-ligand bonding.

Synthesis, structure, and characterization of molybdenum(VI) imido complexes with N-salicylidene-2-aminophenol.

Diimido complexes of the type Mo(NAr)2Cl2(dme) (dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) react with N-salicylidene-2-aminophenol (sapH2) in methanol in the presence of 2 equiv of triethylamine to form complexes with the general formula Mo(NAr)(1,2-OC6H4NH)(sap). The structures of three of these compounds (NAr = 2,6-dimethylphenylimido (1), 2,4,6-trimethylphenylimido (2), 2-tert-butylphenylimido3) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The coordination sphere around the Mo is a distorted octahedron. The oxygen from the 2-aminophenol is trans to the imido nitrogen, whereas the amido nitrogen and the tridentate sap occupy the four equatorial positions. The Mo-N-C imido linkages have angles of 167.5(2) degrees (1), 163.2(2) degrees (2), and 162.4(1) degrees (3). A precursor complex to the imido-amido complex, Mo(NAr)(sap)(OCH3)2 (4, NAr = 2,4,6-trimethylphenylimido), has been isolated and characterized. Compound 4 reacts with 2-aminophenol to form 2, with 2-aminothiophenol to form Mo(NAr)(1,2-SC6H4NH)(sap) (5), with catechol to form Mo(NAr)(1,2-OC6H4O)(sap) (6), with naphthalene-2,3-diol to form Mo(NAr)(naphthalene-2,3-diolate)(sap) (7), with 1,2-benzenedithiol to form Mo(NAr)(1,2-SC6H4S)(sap) (8), and with 1,2-phenylenediamine to form Mo(NAr)(1,2-HNC6H4NH)(sap) (9). The structures of compounds 5-9 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. With the exception of compound 8, the structures are similar to those of 1,2, and 3, with the bidentate ligand occupying one axial and one equatorial position. In 8, 1,2-benzendithiolate occupies two equatorial positions, and the nitrogen from sap is located trans to the imido nitrogen. All complexes were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-vis spectroscopy. When a solution of 4 is exposed to moisture-containing air, MoO2(sap)(CH3OH) (10) is formed. The structure of 10 was also determined.

Ferromagnetic coupling by orthogonal magnetic orbitals in a heterodinuclear CuIIVIV=O complex and in a homodinuclear CuIICuII complex.

The heterodinuclear complex [LCuIIVIVO] 1 was synthesized by using a new unsymmetric dinucleating ligand based on 1,8-naphthalenediol, whereas the homodinuclear CuIICuII complex 2 has a bridging beta-diketimineamid unit. Here we report on the synthesis, molecular structures, and magnetic properties of 1 and 2. In the solid state, both complexes dimerize to tetranuclear entities 1(2) and 2(2). The intradimer interaction in both complexes is ferromagnetic because of the orthogonality of the magnetic orbitals (J12 = +45.6 cm(-1) in 1 and +4.8 cm(-1) in 2). The interdimer interaction in 1 is also ferromagnetic, giving a St = 2 ground state.

Molecular and electronic structures of oxo-bis(benzene-1,2-dithiolato)chromate(V) monoanions. A combined experimental and density functional study.

Two oxo-bis(benzene-1,2-dithiolato)chromate(V) complexes, namely, [CrO(L(Bu))2]1- and [CrO(L(Me))2]1-, have been synthesized and studied by UV-vis, EPR, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy and by X-ray crystallography; their electro- and magnetochemistries are reported. H2L(Bu) represents the pro-ligand 3,5-di-tert-butylbenzene-1,2-dithiol, and H2L(Me) is the corresponding 4-methyl-benzene-1,2-dithiol. A structural feature of interest for both the complexes is the folding of the dithiolate ligands about the S-S vector providing Cs symmetry to the complexes. Geometry optimizations using all-electron density functional theory with scalar relativistic corrections at the second-order Douglas-Kroll-Hess (DKH2) and zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) levels result in excellent agreement with the experimentally determined structures and electronic and S K-edge X-ray absorption spectra. From DFT calculations, the Cs instead of C2v symmetry for the complexes is attributed to the strong S(3p) --> Cr(3d(x2-y2)) pi-donation in Cs geometry providing additional stability to the complexes.

Effect of N-methylation of macrocyclic amine ligands on the spin state of iron(III): a tale of two fluoro complexes.

Syntheses and characterization of [(cyclamacetate)FeF]PF6 (1) and the corresponding N-methylated complex [(trimethylcyclamacetate)FeF]PF6 (3) are presented. Compound 1 is prepared in good yields from the analogous chloro complex, whereas 3 is prepared by hydrolysis of the oxo-bridged diiron compound (Me3cyclam-acetate)Fe-O-FeCl3 (2) in the presence of PF(6) anions. Magnetic susceptibility and spectroscopic data including electron paramagnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectra indicate that 1 contains low-spin Fe(III) (S = 1/2), while 3 is high spin (S = 5/2). Both octahedral fluoro complexes were investigated theoretically by density functional theory in order to determine why the spin states of the two molecules are different. Energies calculated using the B3LYP functional correctly predict 1 to have a low-spin S = 1/2 ground state and 3 to be high spin, regardless of whether a solvation model is included. The difference between 1 and 3 is most likely a combination of steric effects caused by the N-methyl groups, which compel the Fe-N bond distances to be longer in 3 than they ordinarily would be, and also electronic effects, which cause the N-methylated ligand to be a weaker sigma donor than its nonmethylated counterpart.

Photoinduced intramolecular proton transfer of phenol-containing ligands and their zinc complexes.

N,N'-Bis(salicylidene)hydrazine (L(I)), a bis-2-hydroxybenzene-type ligand H2L, its tert-butyl derivative (L(II)), and the corresponding Zn2+ complexes of the type Zn2(LH)2L (Zn-I and Zn-II) were synthesized. The molecular structure of Zn-II was determined by X-ray crystallography at -170 degrees C. The photoreactions of the four compounds in solution were studied by time-resolved UV-vis spectroscopy using nanosecond laser pulses. A weak but strongly Stokes shifted fluorescence signal of the ligands L(I) or L(II) is suggested to be due to excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) from the phenolic hydroxy group to the nitrogen of the methine bond in analogy to the fast enol --> keto tautomerization of other 2-hydroxybenzenes. A transient with the maximum at 480 nm, bleaching at 370 nm, and a lifetime of 0.01-0.3 ms is attributed to the trans-keto tautomer, formed via internal conversion. The decay occurs via trans --> cis isomerization and proton back-transfer to the enol form. Quenching by water indicates a proton-catalyzed reaction. To account for similar fluorescence and transient properties in the cases of the Zn2+ complexes, a photoinduced tautomerism at one of the two free phenolic hydroxy groups is proposed. The rapid ESIPT followed by a relatively slow relaxation process is reversible.

Exchange coupling across the cyanide bridge: structural and DFT interpretation of the magnetic properties of a binuclear chromium(III) complex.

The reaction of [Cr(CN)6]3- with a mixture of trans-[Cr(cyclam)(OH)2]Cl, [Cr(cyclam)(OH)Cl]Cl and [Cr(cyclam)Cl2]Cl affords the cyanide bridged dimer, trans-[HO-Cr(cyclam)-NC-Cr(CN)5]-. The tetraphenylphosphonium salt of the anion crystallizes in space group P2(1)/n and shows a bent arrangement of the Cr1-CN-Cr2 unit with the Cr1-CN bond angle at 166.9 degrees and CN-Cr2 at 160.32 degrees . The Cr2-O bond, trans to the hexacyanide fragment, is very short at 1.902 A. Two dimers are held together by two hydrogen bonds connecting the Cr2-OH group of each dimer with one of the NH groups of the cyclam ligand of an adjacent molecule, leading to an almost linear configuration. These dimers of dimers get packed parallel to each other, generating layers separated by the tetraphenylphosphonium cations. Four of the cyanide groups of the anion are engaged in H-bonds with the four water molecules present in the structure or with a NH group of the macrocycle of an adjacent molecule. From magnetic susceptibility measurements, the dimer was found to exhibit antiferromagnetic interaction between the Cr(III) centers with J=-16 cm(-1)(H=-2JS(A)S(B)). Structural and magnetic parameters have been calculated by density functional theoretical methods at the B3LYP level. The exchange coupling constant, J, calculated for the dimer at the X-ray geometry is -23.2 cm(-1) which is in excellent agreement with the experimental value.
