Replantation and transplantation following avulsion of two maxillary incisors.

Here we describe replantation and transplantation as a treatment conducted in a 16-year-old patient following a bicycle accident. An avulsed left central incisor in maxilla was replanted after extra-oral root canal treatment, and the lost right central incisor of the maxilla was replaced by a left lateral incisor of the mandible in the region of the fracture fissure. Follow-up examination at 34 months showed validity of treatment, although slight evidence of replacement resorption in the transplanted and replanted teeth was revealed.

[Mandibular fractures--retrospective study].

Between the years 1988 and 1997 1222 patients with mandible fractures were treated in the Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery at Medical University in Lublin. Majority of them were male patients aged 19-40. In most cases fractures were caused by assault (55%) and traffic accidents (29.9%) frequently related to earlier consumption of alcohol. Among 702 from 1222 treated patients mandible fractures were accompanied by other injuries and that is both of bones structure and also of soft tissues.

[Facial skeleton traumas in farmers in east-central region of Poland (part I)].

On the base of medical documentation, we presented epidemiological analysis of 215 patients treated for traumas of facial skeleton, which occurred during agricultural tasks. It was concluded that the injuries mentioned above occurred more frequently in males at the age between 18-40. The traumas in this group occurred mainly during use of jig saw or other tools and machinery used in agriculture. However in the female population injuries of facial skeleton resulted mainly from zoogenous trauma and accidental fall downs.

[Maxillo-facial skeletal traumas in farmers in Central-Eastern region of Poland (Part II)].

In this study based on medical documentation we assessed farming associated traumas of maxillo-facial skeleton, which occurred in the years 1988-1997. 99.1% of patients had fractures of facial bone structures. Mandible fractures were the most frequent (47.4%). Upper facial skeleton was fractured in 37.2% of cases. In 14.4% of cases multi-fractures of facial skeleton were diagnosed. Injuries frequently accompanied the mandible fractures and multi-fractures of facial skeleton.

[Treatment of mandibular fractures in patients at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital in Lublin in the years 1988-1997].

Between 1988-1997 in the Department of Dental and Maxillo-facial Surgery of Medical University in Lublin there were applied three types of fixation of mandible bone fracture. Depending on the kind of fracture and teeth condition with 692 (i.e. 60%) patients there was applied preservative treatment and 530 undergone surgery (i.e. 18.1%) and undergone surgical and orthopedic treatment (i.e. 21.9%). Upon analysis of treated population it was concluded, that during period of assessment there occurred significant change of implications for the application of fixation of mandible bone fracture and the leading method became mandible osteosynthesis with intraoral approach.

[Symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction in patients treated for the condylar fractures].

124 patients at the age of 7 to 70 years with condylar fractures were treated in the Department of Dental and Maxillo-Facial Surgery in the years 1992-96. The authors carried out control clinical examinations and the radiographic investigations in 42 patients treated conservatively. Late results of treatment were assessed after 5 since post fracture. In the assessment the range of mandible abduction, function of temporomandibular joints, mandibular malposition following movements, occlusal disturbance, dislocation of the central line, and the acoustic symptoms in TMJ.

The loss of alveolar processus, mandible density and bone tissue structure in reference to the computerized analysis of intraoral radiography.

98 patients treated in the Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medical University and Institute of Rural Medicine in Lublin had radiovisiographically tested premolar teeth area on the left side. Reviewing radiovisiographical picture, there were defined bone mineral density and mandible bone structure and degree of loss of alveolar processus. It was concluded that the degree of loss of alveolar processus is significantly correlated with the researched patients' age, and is inversely correlated with mineral density and equivalent of mandible bone mineral contents. The achieved results prove that demineralisation changes can significantly influence teeth loss.

Assessment of density and mandible bone structure in patients with generic osteoporosis symptoms.

In a group of 130 patients with diagnosed osteoporosis and in 110 patients in control group radiovisiographic test of mandible bone structure had been carried out. Digital images analysis was carried out using Software Radiograph Workshop. It proved that in the group of patients with osteoporosis process in comparison with the control group there has been observed a significant deterioration of mandible bone density, defined as reduced bone mineral contents (BMC), reduced bone mineral density (BMC), and reduced mandible bone density (BD). Bone structure analysis showed in the control group of the treated patients with osteoporosis lower than in the control group quantity of structure of trabecular number (STN), deterioration of bone trabecular density expressed in % of area and greater structure of trabecular width than that in healthy patients.

Effect of age and gender on the condition of bone tissue of stomatognathic system.

The 240 patients, with the mean age 50.3 year for males and 54.4 years for females treated in the Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery Medical University and Institute of Rural Medicine in Lublin had radiovisiographically tested premolar teeth area on the left hand body side. Digital radiovisiographical picture was developed using computer software Radiograph Workshop, and obtained factors of bone mineral density and mandible bone structure were reviewed with regard to gender and age of the treated. It was concluded that relative density, mineral density and bone mineral contents is significantly greater with male than female patients, and is deteriorating significantly with age. Age and gender of the treated in a lesser degree influences on radiological structure factors resulting from radiovisiographical picture analysis using Radiograph Workshop.

Kynurenic acid in human saliva--does it influence oral microflora?

Kynurenic acid (KYNA) is an endogenous antagonist of alpha7 nicotinic receptors and all ionotropic glutamate receptors. Its neuroprotective activity has been suggested. In this study, the presence of KYNAin human saliva and its potential bactericidal role was investigated. KYNAwas found in all samples of human saliva with mean concentration of 3.4 nM. The concentration of KYNA in saliva obtained from patients with odontogenic abscesses was 3.5 times higher than in healthy subjects. We have shown that the human gingival fibroblasts produce KYNAand an inflammatory stimulant, lipopolysaccharide, enhanced its synthesis in vitro. The bactericidal effect of KYNA was also presented. We hypothesize that KYNA may contribute to the control of oral microflora.
