Simple protocol for NMR analysis of the enantiomeric purity of diols.

[reaction: see text] A practically simple three-component chiral derivatization protocol for determining the enantiopurity of chiral 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-diols by (1)H NMR spectroscopic analysis is described. The method involves treatment with 2-formylphenylboronic acid and enantiopure alpha-methylbenzylamine to afford a mixture of diastereoisomeric iminoboronate esters whose ratio is an accurate reflection of the enantiopurity of the parent diol.

A ditopic fluorescent sensor for potassium fluoride.

The addition of potassium fluoride 'switches on' the fluorescence of sensors and while potassium chloride and bromide cause no fluorescence change; the fluorescence can be 'switched off' by removing the potassium cation from the benzocrown ether receptors of sensors and through the addition of [2.2.2]-cryptand and restored by the addition of the potassium cation as potassium chloride.

An enantioselective fluorescent sensor for sugar acids.

Chiral fluorescent boronic acid 1 was found to be a highly enantioselective, chemoselective, and sensitive sensor for sugar acids, such as tartaric acid. Enantioselectivities (K(R)/K(S)) of up to 550:1, chemoselectivity up to 11,000:1, and sensitivities in the micromolar range with sensor 1 were observed. Single-crystal X-ray analysis was used to confirm the structure of the fluorescent species.

Boronic acid based modular fluorescent sensors for glucose.

Modular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) sensors bearing two phenylboronic acid groups, one or two fluorophores: pyrene(a), phenanthrene(b), anthracene(c), 1-naphthalene(d), 2-naphthalene(e) and alkylene linkers, from trimethylene(3) to octamethylene(8), have been evaluated. Systems with a single pyrene fluorophore 34a, 35a and 36a bind the strongest with D-glucose (36a also binds well with D-melibiose). Whilst 37a and 38a bind the strongest with D-galactose. Changing the fluorophore, also, influences the binding, 36a, 36b and 36c are D-glucose selective, whilst 36d and 36e are D-galactose selective. Systems with two fluorophores 36a-a and 36a-b show an overall decrease in binding efficiency. Energy transfer in 36a-b results in enhanced sensitivity and selectivity towards D-glucose.

Molecular color sensors for monosaccharides.

[structure: see text] Boronic acid color sensor 2 undergoes a visible color change, from purple to pink, on the addition of monosaccharides in aqueous methanol at pH 8.21.
