Induction of gamma-turn-like structure in ferrocene bearing dipeptide chains via conformational control.

[structure: see text] A combination of the ferrocene scaffold as a central reverse-turn unit with the dipeptide chains (-L-Pro-L-Ala-NHPy) was demonstrated to induce both inverse gamma-turn-like and antiparallel beta-sheet-like structures. Only the antiparallel beta-sheet-like structure was formed in the ferrocene bearing the heterochiral dipeptide chains (-L-Pro-D-Ala-NHPy), in which highly organized self-assembly was achieved through a network of intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

Chirality organization of ferrocenes bearing dipeptide chains of heterochiral sequence.

[structures: see text] The symmetrical introduction of two dipeptide chains of heterochiral sequence (-L-Ala-D-Pro-NHPy) into the ferrocene scaffold as a central reverse-turn unit was demonstrated to induce both antiparallel beta-sheet-like and type II beta-turn-like structures simultaneously, affording the chirality-organized structure. The ferrocene bearing only one dipeptide chain (-L-Ala-D-Pro-NHPy) exhibited a left-handed helically ordered molecular assembly through a network of intermolecular hydrogen bonds instead of intramolecular hydrogen bonds.

Vanadium-catalyzed pinacol coupling reaction in water.

A catalytic pinacol coupling using water as a solvent was performed by a catalytic amount of vanadium(III) chloride and metallic Al as a co-reductant. A combination forms a binary catalytic system, being in sharp contrast to the reaction in organic solvent, which requires a chlorosilane as an additive. Various aromatic aldehydes underwent the reductive coupling to give the corresponding 1,2-diols in moderate to good yields.

Synthesis and characterization of p-phenylenediamine derivatives bearing an electron-acceptor unit.

[reaction: see text] Two series of aniline oligomers bearing fused heterocycles as an electron-acceptor unit were synthesized. They consist of aniline or its derivatives as an electron donor and benzothiadiazole (BT) or quinoxaline (QX) as an electron-acceptor unit. Benzothiadiazoles 1-3 were synthesized by palladium-catalyzed amination. Quinoxalines 4-6 were prepared by palladium-catalyzed amination or transformation from the benzothiadiazoles. These compounds showed a HOMO-LUMO gap smaller than those of their analogues such as thiophene-substituted BT/QXs. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that the electrochemical behavior is dependent on the position of the acceptor heterocycle. Chemical oxidation with Ag2O afforded the corresponding 1,4-quinonediimine derivatives as an E,E-isomer, stereoselectively. As for the BT pentamer analogues 2 and 3, the first oxidation selectively occurred at the amino group adjacent to the benzothiadiazole unit, giving the regiospecific half-oxidized derivatives. Furthermore, the fully oxidized derivative 24 was isolated and characterized.

An efficient photoinduced iodoperfluoroalkylation of carbon-carbon unsaturated compounds with perfluoroalkyl iodides.

Dependent on the selection of the light sources employed, the photoinduced iodoperfluoroalkylation of a variety of unsaturated compounds takes place efficiently via a radical mechanism. Upon irradiation with a xenon lamp through Pyrex (hnu >300 nm), terminal alkenes (R-CH=CH2) and alkynes (R-C triple bond CH) undergo iodoperfluoroalkylation with perfluoroalkyl iodides (RF-I) regioselectively, providing R-CH(I)-CH2-RF and R-C(I)=CH-RF, respectively. In the case of terminal allenes (R-CH=C=CH2), the photoinduced iodoperfluoroalkylation occurs selectively at the terminal double bond, giving the corresponding beta-perfluoroalkylated vinylic iodides (R-CH=C(I)-CH2-RF) in good yields. The photoinitiated reaction of vinylcyclopropanes (c-C3H5-C(R)=CH2) with RF-I proceeds via the rearrangement of cyclopropylcarbinyl radical intermediates to the homoallylic radical intermediates, and the corresponding 1,5-iodoperfluoroalkylated products (I-(CH2)2CH=C(R)-CH2-RF) are obtained in high yields. Isocyanides (R-NC), as C-N unsaturated compounds, also undergo the xenon-lamp-irradiated iodoperfluoroalkylation to provide the corresponding 1,1-adducts (R-N=C(I)-RF) in good yields. Furthermore, the present photoinitiation procedure can be applied to the iodotrifluoromethylation of unsaturated compounds, when the xenon-lamp-irradiated reactions are conducted under the refluxing conditions of excess CF3-I.

Highly ordered structures of peptides by using molecular scaffolds.

Protein secondary structures such as alpha-helices, beta-sheets, and beta-turns are important in inducing the three-dimensional structure and biological activity of proteins. Designing secondary structure mimics composed of short peptides has attracted much attention not only to gain fundamental insight into the factors affecting protein folding but also to develop pharmacologically useful compounds, artificial receptors, asymmetric catalysts, and new materials. In this tutorial review, we focus on molecular scaffolds employed to induce beta-sheet-like structure in attached peptide chains, thereby creating highly ordered molecular structures, and discuss the versatility of these molecular scaffolds to regulate the attached peptide strands in the appropriate dimensions.

Chirality-organized ferrocene receptor bearing podand dipeptide chains (-L-Ala-L-Pro-NHPyMe) for the selective recognition of dicarboxylic acids.

[structure: see text] The ferrocene receptor bearing the podand dipeptide chains (-l-Ala-l-Pro-NHPyMe) was found to provide a chirality-organized binding site through two intramolecular interchain hydrogen bonds between CO (Ala) and NH (another Ala) of each podand dipeptide chain. The size-selective and chiral recognition of dicarboxylic acids was achieved by multipoint hydrogen bonds of the binding site.

Self-assembly of dipeptidyl ureas: a new class of hydrogen-bonded molecular duplexes.

The dipeptidyl urea 1 composed of two dipeptide chains bearing the C-terminal pyridyl moiety (-L-Ala-L-Pro-NHPy) was prepared. Two molecules of 1 are revealed to be held together by six intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form a hydrogen-bonded duplex by the single-crystal X-ray structure determination. Proton magnetic resonance nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) study indicates the hydrogen-bonded duplex even in solution. Furthermore, a shuttle-like molecular dynamics based on recombination of the hydrogen bonds was observed. The dipeptidyl urea composed of two dipeptide chains bearing the C-terminal pyrenyl moiety (-L-Ala-L-Pro-NHCH(2)Pyr) exhibited both monomer and eximer emissions in the fluorescence spectra, supporting the formation of a duplex. A combination of the C-terminal amide NH function in each side and the designed sequence of hydrogen-bonding sites are considered to be a crucial factor for the duplex formation.

Architectural formation of a conjugated bimetallic Pd(II) complex via oxidative complexation and a tetracyclic Pd(II) complex via self-assembling complexation.

The conjugated homobimetallic palladium(II) complex [(L1)Pd(qd)Pd(L1)] (qd = quinonediimine) was obtained in a one-pot reaction by the in-situ oxidative complexation of 1,4-phenylenediamine with the palladium(II) complex [(L1)Pd(MeCN)] (H2L1 = N,N'-bis(2-phenylethyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide) while in the absence of an additional ligand [(L1)Pd(MeCN)] was converted to the amide-bridged macrocyclic tetramer [Pd(L1)]4.

Highly Selective Thioselenation of Vinylcyclopropanes with a (PhS)(2)-(PhSe)(2) Binary System and Its Application to Thiotelluration.

A novel, highly selective method for introducing organic sulfur, selenium, and tellurium functions into vinylic cyclopropanes has been developed on the basis of the relative reactivities of organic dichalcogenides and chalcogen-centered radicals. Upon irradiation with the light of wavelength over 300 nm, the reaction of vinylcyclopropanes with diphenyl disulfide and diphenyl diselenide proceeds smoothly to provide the corresponding gamma-(selenoethyl)allylic sulfides regioselectively in good yields. Similarly, vinylcyclopropanes undergo regioselective thiotelluration by use of a novel (PhS)(2)-(PhTe)(2) binary system, affording the corresponding ring-opened thiotelluration product in good yields. Furthermore, the scope and limitations of this (PhS)(2)-(PhTe)(2) binary system are discussed.
