Anionic hybrid threadlike micelle formation in an aqueous solution.

Novel anionic hybrid threadlike micelle formation was found in an aqueous solution of an anionic surfactant, sodium tetradecylsulfate (NaC(14)S), and partially quarternized polyelectrolyte at ca. 0.55, poly(N,N-diallyl-N-methylamine-ran-N,N-diallyl-N-ethyl-N-methylammonium bromide) (P(DAM/DAEMBr)). The system precipitated insoluble complexes at a composition of iso-electric points, forming long and stable hybrid threadlike micelles at a composition close to an iso-molar point between NaC(14)S and P(DAM/DAEMBr) in monomer units. Then, the system turned into transparent liquids and showed remarkable viscoelasticity due to entanglements between the formed anionic hybrid threadlike micelles.

Threadlike micelle formation of anionic surfactants in aqueous solution.

We have investigated the formation of threadlike micelles consisting of anionic surfactants and certain additives in aqueous solution. Threadlike micelles long enough to be entangled with each other were formed in a clear aqueous solution of two anionic surfactants, sodium hexadecyl sulfate and sodium tetradecyl sulfate. These solutions also contained pentylammonium bromides or p-toluidine halides and exhibited remarkable viscoelasticity. Because the molar ratio of surfactants to cationic additives in these micelles seemed close to unity, they formed 1:1 stoichiometric complexes between surfactant anions and additive cations, as previously found in systems of cationic surfactants such as hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium salicylate. The viscoelastic behavior of these anionic threadlike micellar systems was adequately described by a simple Maxwell element with a single relaxation time and strength, as in many similar cationic systems.

Solvation and dynamic behavior of cyclodextrins in dimethyl sulfoxide solution.

High-frequency dielectric relaxation behavior up to 20 GHz was investigated for plain (alpha, beta, gamma) and (62 and 100%) methylated cyclodextrins, CDs, in dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO, solution. Each hydrogen atom of OH groups of the CDs solvated a DMSO molecule for a residence time of 130-180 ps due to the hydrogen bond formation to an oxygen atom of DMSO, and a few DMSO molecules were included in cavities of the CDs for a while similar to the residence time. The overall rotational relaxation modes of solvated CDs were also observed depending on the effective sizes of the solvated CDs.

Dielectric relaxation behavior of aqueous solutions of carbobetaines with varying intercharge distances.

The dielectric relaxation behavior of aqueous triethylammonioalkanoate (carbobetaine: Et(3)nCB) solutions was examined as a function of frequency from 1.00 x 10(6) to 2.00 x 10(10) Hz (6.28 x 10(6) to 1.26 x 10(11) rad s(-1) in angular frequency); number of intercharge methylene groups, n = 1, 3, 4, 5, and 10; and solute concentration, c. Two major relaxation modes, fast and slow, were found in all solutions examined. Et(3)nCB systems with n = 5 and 10 possessed another, medium, relaxation mode with relaxation time tau(Dh) at high c values (above the contact concentration of solutes) in addition to the fast and slow modes. The fast mode with a relaxation time, tau(w), of approximately 10 ps was attributed to the rotational motion of bulk water molecules. The slow mode with a relaxation time, tau, of 0.08-1 ns, depending on the n value, was attributed to the overall rotational motion of each carbobetaine in aqueous solution. The concentration normalized relaxation strength, Deltaepsilonc(-1), and tau value of the slow relaxation mode increased with increasing n. These findings were quantitatively explained on the basis of changes in the intercharge distance resulting in increased size and dipole moment of the carbobetaines. Above the contact concentration, collisions between solute molecules likely hindered their rotational motions, leading to an increase in tau. The middle relaxation mode found in longer Et(3)nCBs (n = 5 and 10) with a relaxation time, tau(Dh), of approximately 0.2 ns, more than 20 times as long as that of bulk water molecules, tau(w), was attributed to the dehydration of water molecules tightly bound to all Et(3)nCBs examined (including those with n < 5). This mode was not observed in the solutions of Et(3)nCBs with n < 5, since the tau values corresponding to overall rotation were close to or shorter than the tau(Dh) values.

Hydration of poly(ethylene oxide)s in aqueous solution as studied by dielectric relaxation measurements.

The hydration state of poly(ethylene oxide)s (PEOs) in aqueous solutions was investigated using dielectric relaxation measurements at 25 degrees C over a frequency range up to 20 GHz, which is the relaxation frequency of water molecules in a bulk state. The dielectric relaxation spectra obtained indicated decomposition into two major and one minor relaxation modes with relaxation times of 8.3, 22, and 250 ps, respectively. The two major modes were attributed to rotational relaxation of water molecules belonging to the bulk state and water molecules hydrogen bonded to ethylene oxide (EO) monomer units. The number of hydration water molecules per EO unit depended on the molar mass of PEO (M) and reached a constant value of 3.7 at M > 1500, which agrees with the value obtained by other experiments.

Dielectric behavior of aqueous micellar solutions of betaine-type surfactants.

Dielectric behavior was examined for aqueous solutions of the betaine-type surfactants dodecyldimethylcarbobetaine (C(12)DCB), tetradecyldimethylcarbobetaine (C(14)DCB), cetyldimethylcarbobetaine (C(16)DCB), and oleyldimethylcarbobetaine (OleyDCB) as a function of frequency from 1.00 x 10(6) to 2.00 x 10(10) Hz (6.28 x 10(6) to 1.26 x 10(11) rad s(-1)) with changing surfactant concentration (c(D)). Rotational relaxation times (tau) of the zwitterionic headgroups of the surfactants in aqueous solutions of C(12)DCB and C(14)DCB, which form spherical micelles, are determined to be 0.26 and 0.30 ns, respectively. Values of tau for aqueous solutions of C(16)DCB and OleyDCB, which form threadlike micelles, are identical at 0.44 ns. The tau values of all micellar solutions are constant irrespective of c(D). The increase in tau with increasing alkyl chain length is assigned to an increase of molecular density at the micellar surface. The magnitude of the relaxation strength for the surfactant solutions increases in proportion to c(D) and is not so different from that of an aqueous solution of glycine betaine (GB), which has the same chemical structure as betaine-type surfactants with zwitterionic headgroups but never forms micelles. This finding suggests that the zwitterionic headgroup rotating on the micellar surface possesses a dipole moment with a magnitude essentially the same as that of GB in aqueous solutions.

[The quality evaluation of magnesium oxide tablet due to acid neutralization action].

For the purpose of quality evaluation of magnesium oxide (MgO) tablets, we considered the dissolution test method with changes in the pH of the dissolution medium as an indicator and studied the elution behavior of MgO from commercial MgO tablets. We also studied the effects of particle size on the elution rate of MgO from MgO tablets. A dissolution test was carried out using the rotating basket method in 100 ml of the first fluid (pH 1.2). The stirring speed was set at 200 rpm. The elution behaviors of MgO from two products were markedly different. The medium pH for the sample MM (Magmit) tablet after 15 min reached 9.5 but that for ML (Maglax) tablet was 2.7 even after 60 min. The apparent solubility of MgO in 100 ml of the first fluid were, respectively, 175 mg and 100 mg when medium pH as 9.5 and 1.5. The low dissolution of ML tablets is thought to be due to the large particle size (average particle size r = 226 microm) or due to the effects of additives on elution. These results suggest that neutralizing activity after ingestion of MgO tablets and subsequent laxative effects may, when conditions after ingestion of MM tablets and after ingestion of ML tablets are compared, produce differences between them. We found that the dissolution test method with pH as an indicator is useful in assessing the dissolution behavior of MgO preparations.

Viscoelastic behavior of surfactant threadlike micellar solutions: effects of additives, 4.

Viscoelastic behavior of aqueous solutions of a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium p-toluene sulfonate (CTApTS), and an organic salt, sodium p-toluene sulfonate (NapTS), was examined at room temperature by changing concentrations of CTApTS (CD) and NapTS (CS). CTApTS forms long threadlike micelles in aqueous solution even at low CD in spite of the absence of additives. Aqueous CTApTS solutions show pronounced viscoelastic behavior, which is perfectly described by Maxwell model type viscoelasticity, keeping a single set of relaxation parameters (GN and tau). The magnitude of relaxation strength, GN, is proportional to the square of CD irrespective of the value of CS. The value of a relaxation time, tau, is independent of CD, while the value remarkably reduces with increasing concentration (CS*) of excess pTS- ions in the bulk aqueous phase. The relationship between tau and CS* for the system is not identical with that for aqueous solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and NapTS at CS* < 30 mmolkg(-1). However, the relationships between tau and CS* for these systems agree well with each other at CS* >/= 30 mmolkg(-1). This implies that formed threadlike micelles in both systems have similar structure and the relaxation mechanism is controlled by CS*, but not influenced by the presence of Br- ions above CS* = 30 mmolkg(-1).

Water structures of differing order and mobility in aqueous solutions of schizophyllan, a triple-helical polysaccharide as revealed by dielectric dispersion measurements.

Dielectric dispersion measurements were made on aqueous solutions of a triple-helical polysaccharide schizophyllan over a wide concentration range 10-50 wt % at -45 to +30 degrees C. In the solution state, three different water structures with the different relaxation times tau were found, namely, bound water (taul), structured water (taus), and loosely structured water (tauls) in addition to free water (tauP). Structured water is less mobile and loosely structured water is nearly as mobile as free water, but bound water with taul is much less mobile, thus taul >> taus >> tauls greater, similar tauP. The order-disorder transition accompanies the conversion between structured water and loosely structured water. However, the species with taus remains even in the disordered state and constitutes part of bound water in the entire temperature range. In the frozen state, in addition to bulk water formed by partial melting, two mobile species existed, which were assigned to liquidlike bound water and found to be a continuation of bound water in the solution state. These relaxation time data are discussed in connection with the entropy levels of the four structures deduced from heat capacity data (cf. Yoshiba, K.; et al. Biomacromolecules 2003, 4, 1348-1356).
