Workshop 6 (synthesis): monitoring, understanding and managing waste fluxes within a drainage basin.

Waste is produced in a number of activities and transported within the drainage basin by natural as well as man-made processes. The pollution of water courses, i.e. rivers, lakes, coastal areas and other waterbodies, tends to negatively influence both use of the water and aquatic life. Tools are needed in order to decide on how to minimise the negative effects of waste fluxes, supported by appropriate monitoring procedures.

Workshop 6 (synthesis): water pricing.

Water shold be costed so that it is valued, and fees should be transparent and contribute to adequate cost recovery with consideration of social, economic and environmental effects. There is a need for targeted subsidies to assist the poor. Water pollution fees for point sources can reduce discharges.

Workshop 1 (synthesis): relation between industry and other water interests in a catchment context--facilitated stakeholder dialogue.

Workshop 1 considered the nature and identity of water stakeholders and how best to facilitate an open, transparent, democratic process of dialogue leading to agreed strategies to address water problems.

Workshop 2 (synthesis): balancing water and social challenges through restructuring of industry.

The workshop discussed the possibility of breaking the link between economic growth and environmental damage, and options that would encourage industry and government to take steps to reduce emissions, with 8 catalysts for change identified.
