[Primary extranodular non-Hodgkin's lymphomas--observations on etiopathogenesis, histology and prognosis].

The total non-Hodgkin's lymphoma-population treated between 1978 and 1986 by means of radiotherapy or combined chemo/radiotherapy was analysed as to primary extranodular manifestation. 39 cases, 16 women and 23 men, were observed (stage IE 12, stage IIE 22 and stage IIIE 5). Immunoblastic (10), lymphoblastic (9) and centroblastic (6) lymphomas are the most frequent with respect to histology. Gastroenteron (16) and otorhinolaryngological region (13) are in the lead with regard to localisation. 5-year-survival-rates are determined in dependence on clinical stage: IE 65.8%, IIE 39.2% (low, connected with the proportion of high-malignant histology) and IIIE 25.0%. The 5-year-survival-rate of primary gastrointestinal manifestation amounted to 51.5%. With respect to aetiopathogenesis of primary extranodular lymphomas gut-, mucosa- and bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue, aberrant lymph-nodes and the influence of viral- and immunologic factors seem to be important.

Comparison of the nucleoprotein genes of a chicken and a mink influenza A H 10 virus.

The base sequences of the coding region of the nucleoprotein (NP) genes of two H 10 influenza A viruses, one avian (virus N) and one mink virus, have been determined by primer extension. When the NP genes and the NP sequences derived from the only open reading frame of the two H 10 viruses were compared with those of other human and avian influenza A viruses, it turned out that the mink virus NP was highly related to that of other avian strains, but differed from that of the human strains. Comparison of the NP genes of the mink and avian strains of European origin suggests a direct lineage between them. Since the NP plays a major role in species specificity, it is assumed that an avian influenza virus has directly invaded the mink population.

[Characterization of functional disorders of bone marrow by measuring chemiluminescence].

It is reported on first experiences with measurements of chemiluminescence on the bone marrow. Suspensions of the bone marrow show a spontaneous chemiluminescence which can be stimulated by Zymosan. Haematological diseases and changes of the bone marrow under influence of the cytostatic therapy react on the behaviour of chemiluminescence. The size of the changes possibly allows of conclusions to the behaviour of the regeneration of the bone marrow.

[Problems in internal medicine therapy of breast cancer].

In 41 female patients with metastasizing carcinoma of the breast remission rate and survival time were analysed under a combined chemotherapy and hormone therapy as well as marginal conditions of the treatment, such as referral modalities and periods. The remission frequency of 66% in an average duration of the remission of 9.6 months corresponds to the international experiences. In only 5% of all patients a specialist in internal medicine and oncology took part in the statement of the primary therapy conception. In many cases the referral to the medicamentous therapy was done only in the late stages of the disease. An improvement of the interdisciplinary cooperation in the treatment of the carcinoma of the breast is actually necessary.

[Prognosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas in the Dresden district with special reference to combined radio-/chemotherapy].

The total population affected with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and treated by means of radiotherapy or combined radio-chemotherapy between 1960 and 1985 at the Medical Academy Dresden was analysed as to prognosis. 247 patients were classified according to the previous German scheme, 79 were subdivided on the basis of the recommendations laid down in the Kiel classification. The remission rates and survival curves achieved will stand out the comparison with international literature (remission rates of the low malignancy group amounted to 85.3 p.c. and those of the high malignancy group to 80.0 p.c.; the 5-years survival rates of the low malignancy group amounted to 61.9 p.c. and those of the high malignancy group to 41.7 p.c.). The influence of histology, clinical stage and involvement of organs is discussed on the basis of our results and informations obtained in literature. Our analysis confirms the high importance which must be attached to a common radiologic-internal outpatient-department for co-ordinating the diagnostic and therapeutical programme.

[Diagnostic value of neuropsychiatric, audiological and electrophysiological examinations of alcohol-dependent patients].

Neuropsychiatric, audiological and electrophysiological examinations performed on 52 patients under neuropsychiatric therapy after long-term alcohol dependence, gave evidence of polytopical impairment of the peripheral and central nervous systems as well as inner ear. The results show that in order to ascertain impairments, a comprehensive diagnostic program is to be applied with special focus on electroneurographic examinations of peripheral nerves. According to the present findings, the latter are also recommended as a screening method, in particular scrutinizing the N. fibularis while also determining the threshold audiograms.

[Effect of music on depressed patients].

The effects of the performance of various forms of music and an acoustic non-musical comparative stimulus on the condition and efficiency of depressive persons were studied. These persons react in the mot uniform manner to the performance of Vienna waltzes and slow phrases of piano concertos by Mozart, partly with considerable improvements of their condition and increase in efficiency while contrary reactions were produced by other forms of music. Persons suffering from depressive defect schizophrenia with reduced drive showed positive effects after waltz music and folksongs. The results are encouraging to include suitable music under group therapeutic conditions in the complex psychiatric therapy rehabilitation strategy.
