[Primary adenocarcinoma of the middle ear].

One case of primary adenocarcinoma of the middle ear is reported, which developed from a chronic otitis media. Histological examination established the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. Its clinical appearance was benign, being restricted to the middle ear and tympanic membrane and with no bone destruction or metastases. Two years after local surgery there was no evidence of recurrence.

[Indications for surgical intervention in occult paranasal sinusitis in the child].

Sinus surgery, including antroscopy, is rarely indicated in children because radiological changes and their histological correlates often disappear spontaneously. In this paper we report the follow up of 17 children who underwent sinuscopy for an occult sinusitis with radiologic opacity of the maxillary sinuses. Even though considerable inflammatory reactions were seen normal x-rays were found in 68% one year after endoscopy.

[Submucous turbinate resection].

This article describes the authors' experiences on submucous resection of the turbinate bone in chronic hypertrophic lower turbinates. Similar to the procedure in septoplasties, this surgery preserves the mucosa and its physiological properties. The technique is facilitated by an amazingly low tendency to bleeding. 70 patients were followed up post-operatively. More than 70% reported a marked improvement of nasal breathing. No serious complications were seen.

[Juvenile sinusitis maxillary sinusitis--an indication for sinusoscopy?].

Transnasal sinuscopy was performed in 43 children with maxillary sinusitis diagnosed by x-ray film. 70 maxillary sinuses were inspected. On 30 occasions a mucosa specimen was taken for histology. A comparison was made between endoscopical, radiological and histological findings. While we found a high degree of agreement between endoscopy and x-ray film, there was no correlation between endoscopic and histologic findings.

[Paranasal sinusitis in children].

Sinus x-rays were taken of all children admitted for surgery to the ENT Department of Bochum for one year. 43.9% of 273 children and 29% of 14 healthy control children showed opacities of the maxillary sinuses. As described previously, sinusitis in childhood produces few symptoms. Patients with nasal obstruction due to adenoids did not show a higher incidence of pathological changes on sinus x-rays. Children with sinusitis did not have a higher rate of combined chronic otitis media, chronic bronchitis and chronic tonsillitis than the patients without pathological changes on the sinus x-rays.

[Steroid therapy in caustic lesions of the oesophagus].

Since controlled clinical studies on the value of steroid therapy do not exist, the discussion on its effect is still controversial. Several well documented studies on animals have been done since 1952. Based on these findings we can expect an inhibition of stricture formation in cases of moderate acid burns where the muscular layer is not or only slightly damaged.
