[Diverticulitis of the right colon. Description of our experience].

Two cases of diverticultis of the right colon are described which received surgical treatment. These lesions often simulate acute appendicitis and thus represent a intraoperative surprise Differential diagnosis using a neoblastic mass is often impossible. The paper stresses the importance of surgical treatment which in general terms is the same as the treatment of the diverticular mass of the left colon. In cases where it is difficult to decide between a phlogostic and neoblastic pathology, it is advised that a right hemicolectomy should be performed in line with criteria for oncological requirements.

Nasal meningioma. Report of a case.

A case of intranasal meningioma is reported. The possible etiopathogenic hypotheses are discussed. A possible primary intracranial localisation has to be excluded. Therapy is also briefly discussed.

Parotid sialography and minor salivary gland biopsy in the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome. A comparative study of 84 patients.

Parotid sialography and labial salivary gland biopsy were performed in 84 patients with clinical features of primary or secondary Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Signs of focal sialoadenitis were found in 73/84 patients (87%), but only 37 (44%) scored 4 which is considered diagnostic for classic SS. In contrast 55/84 patients (66%) showed some sialographic abnormalities. In patients with both primary and secondary SS, hypergammaglobulinemia and anti-SSA antibodies appeared to be the serological variables more closely related to the entity of either sialographic or histologic abnormalities. In primary SS extraglandular manifestations and recurrent parotid swelling were significantly associated with parotid sialography and labial salivary gland biopsy changes, respectively. Our study indicates that currently both radiological and histological examination are necessary for the assessment of salivary gland involvement in SS.

Plasmacytoma of the parotid gland. Report of a case and review of the world literature.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EP) is a relatively rare neoplasm; about 90% of cases are localized in the head and neck area. EP has been considered a precursor of multiple myeloma but cases showing long disease free intervals or cure by surgery alone have been reported. A research of the world literature pointed out the extremely rare localization of solitary plasmacytoma in the salivary glands. Only 9 cases have been reported until now, 6 in the parotid gland, 2 in the submandibular glands and 1 in both the parotid and submandibular gland.

Nasal meningioma. Report of a case.

A case of intranasal meningioma is reported. The possible etiopathogenic hypothesis is discussed giving advice on excluding a possible intracranial primary neoplasia. Therapy is also briefly discussed.

Postirradiation meningioma.

A case of meningioma of the posterior cranial fossa is reported. The tumor developed 12 years after radiation treatment for a polar spongioblastoma of the cerebellum in an 8-year-old boy. The possible role of the radiation in the oncogenesis of the second tumor is discussed. In light of the information in the literature concerning the malignancy of such postirradiation tumors, the authors recommend careful evaluation for the real necessity of radiation therapy, particularly for children in whom the meninges may be hypersensitive to ionizing radiation.

Fine needle aspiration in the diagnosis of breast masses: our experience.

The authors compare their experience, obtained after 626 examples of fine needle aspiration cytology of the breast, with the results of other departments. The very high specificity of the test is confirmed (absence of false positive). Also false negatives are quite low (6%). Finally, the repeatibility of such a procedure and the low cost suggest inclusion of fine needle aspiration cytology in every diagnostic protocol for mammary cancer.

Synchronous adenoacanthoma of the ovary and endometrial adenocarcinoma. Report of two cases.

Two cases of synchronous endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the endometrium and ovary are here presented. The clinical aspects and the pathologic findings support an autochthonous origin of these neoplasias. The existence of the extended Müllerian system can explain such a possibility. The recognition of this possible association is really important because it implies a different therapeutic approach.

Papillary carcinoma of thyroglossal duct cyst. A case report.

A case of papillary carcinoma of thyroglossal duct cyst in a 68 year old woman is here described. Histology showed a papillary carcinoma of thyroid type inside the cyst. The wall of this latter contained normal thyroid follicles. Psammoma bodies and ground glass nuclei were also observed. The origin, pathology and relationship of this neoplasia with a thyroid primary are discussed.
